now that I've put over 1,000 miles on this bike I'm wondering why the gen light come on after I run it awhile and there seems to be no consistant why.

I was only running my turn signals the other day and then the gen light was glowing bright, seems every time I used the rear brake pedal the light would start to fade and then as soon as I released the pedal it would glow again.

Some days I only seem to have a bit of a light in the begging and then it goes out.

sometimes higher revs make it go out sometimes the opposite.

I have a tested used original charging system in there (someday I may upgrade to 12v but for now every intention is to keep it original)

I have purchased new gen contacts, will that help? However I'm thinking the old ones are fine....

thoughts?

The normal mode is that the light comes on when the key is inserted, and will glow at idle. Shortly above idle the light should go completely out and stay out.

There are a number of possibilities. You mention that you've gotten a new set of carbon brushes for the generator. They are a wear item and you might need them. But if you take the front cover off and look at the existing brushes, if the braided wires that come off them are not at the bottom of the groove in the brush holders, then they are probably not worn out.

If the light seems to come on at higher revs, the generator rotor could be worn or mounted so that it's out of round when spinning, or the snail springs could be weak. This will cause the brushes to float and not make solid contact. If this is the case you should be able to see a lot of sparking at the brushes by running the bike in a darkened garage with the front cover off.

A misadjusted mechanical voltage regulator could possibly cause a problem like this. There's a good section on testing the voltage regulator in the "three language" official shop manual.

Good luck!

Darryl is far more knowledgeable than I.

When I was having electrical problems not unlike you have mentioned this year, I checked first to make sure all the wires on the switch plate in the headlight and under the electrical cover on the engine were in place and tight. In both of my cases, I found loose wires. Tightening them in place fixed the problems.

Just check that first just in case. If the wires are all o.k., do what Darryl suggests.
