Help me I'm confused. In another thread someone pointed out that the article in this issue of ON was written by Mandy. I read the article and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I was amazed to find that they used "Models" in the photo. What gives with models wearing motorcycle clothing? I've seen it in a number of mags during the years and can't seem to figure it out. One look at these people and you know they have never been on a bike. Some of them don't look like they have ever spent more than five minutes in the sun their entire live.

Mandy is an attractive person. I really don't understand.

Am I missing something?

The way I heard it went down was Mandy was to her own modeling. But before the shoot got under way, some heavy Goons from the local came by and leaned on the photographer a bit and helped him understand "how things work around here."
So to make deadline they used the union's people.

It's the IBPMCMP way.:brow

I have a long time friend and expert rider that is, actually, a motorcycle model. He works in a variety of venues, from modeling clothing for photo shoots to riding bikes and being photographed for magazines and manufacturers.

He works both union and non union sets. The non union jobs pay him once and then he's done, but the union jobs (Screen Actor's Guild or SAG) pay him royalties every time one of his commercials airs. I think he's done work for Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha now, as well as most of the Motorcyclist group of publications. As you'd guess, he's on the hunt for SAG jobs all the time. For a few years, he was the guy that got photographed for the Kawasaki product brochures.

It's surprisingly difficult to get exactly the look you're supposed to have when you've got a ZX10 cocked into a corner. They want a certain kind of aggressiveness displayed in the body posture, but not too much. They want the bike positioned on a certain spot of the track and a whole bunch of other requirements. Given that they shoot most of this stuff either first thing in the morning or right at sundown, they have to work fast, so he might ride by the same corner 30 or 40 times in 20 minutes.

It's pretty lucrative, actually and he makes enough to do OK. It doesn't hurt that his wife's an optometrist, either.

Years ago I hired models for advertising work. There is a distinct difference in the amount of time a seasoned professional model requires to complete a shot versus a typical amateur or part-time model. I was happy to pay union scale to finish projects on time and actually reduce the amount of hours needed by the photographer and his/her studio. Despite appearances (no pun intended) modeling is not as easy as it looks. :) And typically there are a lot of ancillary people (on the clock) involved in a typical shoot.

*I say all this without any knowledge of the specifics of the ON situation or the skills or qualifications of the individuals involved. Just offering a little background and insight on the profession. :wave

i should model motorcycle clothing. it seems as though the clothing is modeled and marketed to people of about my stature, (really f'ing tall and under 200 lbs) but rarely carried in sizes that fit us. aside from Rev It stuff, everything fits me like sack of potatoes, its really not fair. i'm considering a special order road crafter pretty soon in black with olive green armor, height and weight adjusted, with a little room for "growth", i'm sick of baggy clothing.

There are lots of reasons most of which have already been covered, but there is the other one that is surprising but needs to be addressed. The brands want to present a certain image, as an example some brands might not want a tattooed person. Think about the models of leather gear versus textile gear.
