There seems to be a collective yawn in reaction to the announcement of the BMW reorganization. I, for one, am happy for several reasons. Let me explain two.
I did not have a reason to use my sale file! I save things to multiple files. About a year ago I started saving things to a BMW Motorrad Sale file. There have been a variety of things that have taken place that if taken at other than face value have made me wonder if BMW was getting out of the bike business. I have run various scenarios around and did not arrive at an acceptable exit strategy, yet I could not discount it as an option. I am pleased they are not selling.
The second is a two sided coin. BMW is not buying a car brand. Okay they left themselves an out for a possible future purchase but not now. They looked at Volvo and mentioned in conjunction with others. With the analysis they were putting themselves through it did not make sense. The other side of the coin is BMW’s purchase of Husqvarna. During this intense self analysis they could see a clear business model where the expansion of the motorrad operations made sense. They are committing to the two wheel market.
The announcement of the R 1200 HP Sport and the entry into WSBK was expected. The expansion of the model line up with an F800GS and other models will happen. All of this is predictable because they have been poorly guarded secrets. The exciting news of the last five days, at least to me, is the motorrad division is a part of the future at BMW.
