Under acceleration, at relatively low RPMs (<4000), there is a "whine" sound. The sound may be present at higher RPMs, but engine noise seems to drown out the sound.
Is this just a normal sound from a properly running bike, or might this be indicative of something else?
No other symptoms, tranny works fine, bike has just under 27,000 miles. I know - not much information here, but perhaps this sound is a warning sign of some impending failure or problem?

I've had a K100RT, a K75RT and currently have a R80RT and a R1200CLC. I thought they all had a 4th gear that whined more than the others. I figured it was the nature of the beast and forgot about it. I notice it more sometimes than others.

This is the kind of feedback I like hearing! Thanks for sharing your experience.

I bought my 2002 1150 RT new and have never noticed any whining. Maybe I don't hear well enough. Next time I take it out I'll listen for any difference in 4th.

Are you sure it's the transmission whining?
I have an '02 which had an unusual whine at 35000 miles. I discovered the alternator belt was nearly disintegrated.
After replacing it this weekend, along with a stem to stern fluid change (engine, transmission and final drive) the bike is now purring.
Just a thought.

Just had my alternator belt replaced about three months and 3,000 miles ago. The 'wrench said it was just about to fail. There is a theory that alternator belts on RT-Ps fail/need replacement at earlier intervals as they are dealing with a heavier load with the larger RT-P alternator.
The "whine" to which I refer occurs only in 4th gear, and only under acceleration.
