I finally took the course this weekend. A neighbor of mine who is a fairly new ride (1yr) took it with me. I took a basic course back in '80 so it was time to refresh. What I learned from the course was that I was doing most things right and a few thing wrong. I also learned to maneuver that heavy RT in the S curve and the box, with coaching a few practice and runs I was able to do the turns inside the small box. I was skeptical that I would be able to do this. I will need to practice more but the slow speed skills are the main reason I took the course. As for my neighbor he learned alot and had a great day. We both passed the course and had a great ride home.
There were 11 riders in the class mostly metric cruisers, 1 HD, 1 sport bike and a couple of dual purpose.
Thanks to the many of you who continually recommend the courses:clap

Glad you enjoyed the class. MSF might be expanding there road course to some other states next year. They had a pilot program in Long Beach California this year. It contains some higher speed manuveres and some actual on road riding.

I got invited to take the the Advanced Rider Training course, an equivalent offered by the Canada Safety Council.

Besides the slow speed maneuvers which was a small part of the full day of training, it covered many other aspects as well. A fun day I must say.

Its unfortunate that the MSF or CSC doesn't offer training videos of their programs. I haven't found any. I do have the MSF book, "Motorcycling Excellence" though.

I took a basic course back in '80...

And that has me wondering...

All of the motorcycle training in North America seems to be done in parking lots. Thats understandable when covering the basics until the rider learns how to operate the controls, etc. effectively, but I have yet to see any on-road training here as they do in Europe.

There is one school in Quebec where I have seen the rider in communication with the instructor following in the car behind. Thats how its done in Europe.
