Well, I have a 78 R100 with a blown engine. I bought a nice 82 R100 engine on ebay (I know now that there are valve issues with the 82's, but I[ll deal with that later). My issue is the obvious ignition connection issues. The 82 has (but didn't come with) an ignition cannister, while the 78 has the points system. My guess would be to buy a cannister and components and make the ignition an 82. I'm sure it isn't that easy, but what do I need to to do/purchase here.
Thanks Ray PDX

Yep, you guessed it. Go buy the cannister, etc from a dealer and put it in. I believe you may also be able to use the '78 stuff if you wanted, but I would never use points again. DYNA3 is still made too and probably will bolt right in. I've not looked recently, but the cam systems are compatible I believe. Somebody can chime in here for more confirmation. The valves? Who knows, you may get lucky and have one thats been changed already to the newer valves. You won't know until you ride it and check 'em regular for a while. What happened to the other motor'78. I happen to have a '78, since new and wonder. Randy13233

The BMW electronic ignition requires matching coils. The '78s don't.

It threw a rod(s) on the maiden ride home. Apparently, one of the previous owners had reused the con-rod nuts, which you are supposed to replace not reuse. The nuts came off in a hard ride and did some serious pin-balling in the case. I'm going to try to salvage the engine when I can assemble all the destroyed components. It was a sad homecoming.
The 78 has two coils, is that different than matching coils? And everything else just kinda will hook-up? I'm gonna play with the bike tomorrow.

No, "two" doesn't mean "matching."

You need (two) electronic ignition coils to "match" the electronics in the electronic ignition. You'll ruin same using your '78 coils.
