How long should clutch plates last? I ride about 5K /yr on my 1980 100RT. A general mix of hwy and some in town. I changed the plate about 24K ago. Now it's slipping. I'm trying to adjust the cable, but haven't got it right yet. Seems to slip more at 55+mph. I just can't believe it's the plate again already. Of course, everyone is different w/ riding styles, etc.

First - make sure that there is some free play at the lever. If not it may slip.

To answer the question about "how long" we got 50K to 80 K on Airheads and get over 100K on K bike and oilheads.

But there are a couple of key variables. Any fluid leaks - either a transmission input shaft seal or an engine rear crankshaft seal can oil foul a clutch and make it slip regardless of mileage.

Also, if last time the clutch disk was replaced the fixed ring and pressure plate were reused, then full contact and engagement might not be happening. I've done it both ways - but replacing everything including the spring is the way to go to make sure of long life.

Thank you for the reply. I had changed a "wear "plate and a diaphragm type plate about 25K ago. I've adjusted the new cable I just installed according to the specs. The clutch slips mostly at higher speeds when accelerating. 55-70. I've been "messing" with the cable adjustments some and have made it a little better, but it dosen't completely go away. Maybe I can get through until winter. She's starting to need lots of work though. Wish we had a mechanic in Indy!

Thanks for the dealer info- I had heard that rumor for over a year now. Wonder if they'll work on airheads? I'll have to call tomorrow!

I think I've adjusted all I can. I'm pretty sure I need a new clutch.

Only for 1981 and later models...bike in question is a 1980 bike with the original heavy flywheel.
