Trying to put saddle bags on early R80GS. I see from the parts fiche, that all the stock parts to put cases on my rear frame are not available any longer. It appears the "baggage porter" Part # 46542300126, which is needed to attach case holders is NA. Anyone have an alternate method to get put a good set of saddlebags on one of these without the exhaust cooking them??

Thanks

Try looking under R80ST, I owned one back in the day and had the factory bags.

The R80GS mounts were different as they weren't chromed like the ones on the ST. The bracketry was the same just the finish was different!

Just a thought!

I bought my G/S from a guy a couple of years ago and he told me that it had R100GS bags on it. He has the back brace shimmed out with several (10-15) washers to make it fit. I will try to remember to post pics when I can get a digital camera.

I'm looking at the Chase Harper 3850 bags with an aluminized insulation heat shield on inside of one bag. But have not got bike running yet to tell how hot outer muffler shield gets. It appears rear passengers leg would be on it. Anyone tell me how hot it gets?

Yes, looking at dealers fiche, the chrome holders are still available and cheaper then the black paint ones???????

Also interesting, the R 80 ST muffler looks like mine except it has another heat shield bolted over it. But that muffler has nut serts in it for the shield to attach to. Wondering what muffler looks like inside? I could put nutserts into outer muffler jacket to put that shield on, but if that is open to exhaust, a problem. There must have been some heat issues with rear passenger on straight G/S? ST muffler is $600 and chrome.

It all started with him and his R80GS in Africa! I am fairly certain he can accomodate an older 80GS, with a new set of his Aluminum bags. Pricey, but money well spent. If this is a "lifer" bike, the best will do! If you're not going to keep it, go cheaper. Randy13233

Bags or luggage not as much the problem as finding the correct mounts. Rear frame was broken by previous owner with homemade "luggage" and mount.

Thank you guys much.
Finally got a hold of Jesse, and he has about 20 sets hidden away for early airhead G/S complete with all mounting parts needed to bare frame for $950, a bargain!

The Jesse's are WAY better than stock. Feel good.
