OK, so you've got some cool pictures from that nifty digital camera, but you can't get them posted here because they're too big.

So how the heck do you get them to a size that'll allow you to post?

1. Get yourself a copy of IrfanView. It's free and you can get it at www.irfanview.com.

2. Fire up Irfanview and open your image.
http://kbasa.smugmug.com/photos/2489242-M.jpg

3. Select Image>Resize & Resample
http://kbasa.smugmug.com/photos/2489244-M.jpg

4. Select 72dpi and a size of about 300dpi across or so. Be sure to leave the little "preserve aspect ratio" box checked so your image doesn't get distorted.
http://kbasa.smugmug.com/photos/2489243-M.jpg

5. Save your photo using File>Save As. This will keep you from changing your original file and will give you a nice one to put up on the web.

6. When you post your message, use the Attach File item, but don't preview your message! vBulletin, our forum software, will drop your attachment if you do.

Want to practice? Use this thread to do that. We'll keep it stickied so it's always here.

Good description on the picture with a digital camera. My question is ? I don't have a digital camera but can scan a regular pic to my computer. How can I post a pic with my scan method? Thanks IHCB:dunno

Hey Cowboy,

You can use IrfanView to scan the photo print (use File>Acquire) and then resize it to fit, just like if it was taken with a digicam.

Well here goes. I will try to see if I got this right. If I did there is a pic of me at the time of delivery of my new K12 at Daytona BMW last year ( pre-bikeweek a couple of days):D

Neat picture! Does your scanning software allow you to select a portion of the frame to scan? I have an HP and it allows me to click on the upper left corner of the photo I'm scanning and select just that for my picture.

Nice K12, mang!

I put in the 72 x 300 and hit ok on the page but some how the pic still attached from the my pictures folder as 1275. Any tips on where I am going wrong on sizing before attaching an image? I had the picture saved in My Pictures before opening iview and the image size is what it was from scanning to My Pictures. If the image is resized in iview do attach directly from iview or go back to My Pictures as I did? Thanks for your help. Cowboy

I have a OfficeJet G85 all in one machine with a flatbed scanner/copier. It does more than I'm sure I know to operate. I'll see about all the functions as I get more proficient with all this imagery stuff. I did notice it had instructions during scanning to attach to a website and e-mail directly from scan mode but I wasn't sure how to attach directly to BMWMOA as shown. Thanks again IHCB

No, try it out. If you don't like the results, you can go back via the Edit button and delete your post.

Dave,

I'm not sure about Mac stuff, but I'm sure there's something out there for you guys. Does your Mac have something like Paint that allows you to capture photos?

dbrick
02-28-2004, 07:27 AM
Yes, there are several ways of doing that. I wonder if it'd work to just attach a photo without further processing it as you described for PCs.

I guess I'll just have to, you know, actually *try* it. <g>

Yup. You can always delete the post. I put this together assuming the image would be too big and would need to be resized. Knowing how well Macs handle images and the like, you may already have tools that allow you to resize and the like.

There's really only one restriction on photos that the forum has: size. The attachment can't be more than 160K. The size of the image isn't really restricted, but if they get too big, they can be hard to view as they expand beyond the edge of the screen.

All of a sudden I cannot attach a picture, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Yeah, I know the size limitations and also the fact that you can't preview. What else can be causing my trouble? Maybe something to do with my browser? I don't have a clue so if anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it. I have done successful attachments in the past......

Thanks a lot.

You'll need a place on the web to host your pictures. A bunch of us are using smugmug.com ($20 a year, unlimited albums) to host the photos. When you're putting your message together, you click the IMG button and past a link to the picture in the box. I think there's a thread in the How Do I... forum that talks about how to do that.

It's definitely easier to do than attaching photos. If you take a lot of digipics like I do, the hosting is a huge bargain.

Grateful for all the help..I have made one modest change, not sure it will affect the outcome:
-using windows 98, Irfanview, reducing to 3oo width, 72 DPI
-after the text, I add the picture under "attached file", I DO NOT PREVIEW,
-as I submit , it appears to be taking the "whole effort", but as above, only the text comes thru
-yes, in early takes...pic was rejected outright becasue it was too large (that does not happen anymore since downsizing)..I get a Thank you for submitting the thread.

Here goes! If it does not take - will check back this evening.

Try saving them as .jpg files and see if that helps. .bmp isn't usually viewable in a browser, I believe.

Thought I'd try a little different version, still 75dpi, but cropped vertically and made about 400 pixels tall.

Incidentally, this is a rare photo of an early Australopithecus, taken in a cave near Outshoorn, South Africa. It's not well known that early man had discovered the Corda tree, the bark of which makes very durable clothing for exploration. I'm told they called it "Cordura".

The key to doing larger pictures is to link it to an external source. There is a limit to the size of an attachment, but if you put the image on a hosting site, such as smugmug which we have a program with (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=4417), you can then link to it using the "insert image" option.

I don't have a problem with the sizing and all; what I would like to know is, can you put more than one picture in a post? There have been times when I would have related a story or two where more than one picture would help tell the complete story with fewer words but did not, because I felt it would detract so much that it was not worth the effort--maybe I'm just too lazy to type all those words. :dunno

Yes you can. However the picture needs to be hosted on the Internet some where, such as perhaps using the
Affinity Program with Smug Mug (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=4417). Then once you have your pictures posted, the process is pretty straight forward.

I usually have two windows open when composing the post, one for the post composition, and one that has the picture I want to include. (These directions assume you are using a Windows Operating System) Then I right click on the image I want to include, if I am Internet Exploder I use the property information to find the path to the picture. I then highlight it and copy it. I usually use Firefox which depending on your plugins has the same feature and an even better one, "Copy Image Location" Then I switch to the post composition window and click on the http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/images/editor/insertimage.gif image icon and paste the URL for the picture where prompted. That was how I included the icon.

Hope that helps. :thumb

You're pasting the URL to the page that the image is displayed on, not the link to the actual image.

the link to the image is...
http://snc1923.smugmug.com/photos/23541889-M.jpg

not...
http://snc1923.smugmug.com/gallery/564870/5/23541889/Medium

If you go to the latter address, at the bottom of the page is a button for "share with friends, forums". Click on that. Then copy the link for "medium", or whatever size you prefer. Then do as you describe in your post (click on image button, past URL).

Still small. The computer continues to tell me that my "file" is too big, but does not inform me as to how to make my "file" smaller. Try this: If you have an option to change the resolution of the file, change it to 75dpi. That'll be fine for the web, but will still allow you to post a file that has dimensions of 400 x 400 or so. I'm gonna guess that you're resizing, but not changing the resolution.

Both measurements have an effect on how big the file is. As you raise each number, you raise the 'density' of the file and how big the file is.

Exactly. That's how folks insert multiple pictures into one post.

Also, be aware that the MOA provides a discount at Smugmug which provides some features that most of the free services don't. Unlimited albums and photos hosted, security to keep some albums away from prying eyes, sharing with specific groups of people and 2GB of transfer per month for $25/year. Additionally, some portion of your membership is returned to the MOA by Smugmug. We're using those funds to help underwrite this site.

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't seem to go up to 400 width with 72 dpi, it won't let me upload it. It continues to inform me that my file is too big. I guess I will have to check into smugmug and see if there is a better way to do it. This is very educational for me. I will keep trying.

You cant do that with pictures that are on your computer, unless you supply a link to them. Most of the folks that do use a hosting site like smugmug. You use the insert image icon and place the location of the picture. I was frustrated about getting pictures on the site, but after joining smugmug, it is a seamless and painless process. They serve two different purposes. IRFanview is a software program for editting your photos. Smugmug is a hosting service for having a place on the internet to put your newly editted photos.

Hope that helps. If you have any more questions, just shout.

The second IMG tag needs a "/" to tell the software that the tag is closed.

I put the / in and your picture showed up.

If you've got your post a reply preference set to "Guided Mode", when you click the little yellow button with the mountain, smugmug will open a dialog box. Just paste your image location there and you're done!

If you want to take a look at how the IMG tags should work, just click Edit on the post above and you'll see how they work. That's pretty much how it works with any of the formatting tools. You have the tag, which might be a B for bold, or I for italics, or whatever with the square brackets around it and the same tag, with a / added to stop the formatting.

Nice picture too! :)

Yeah, it can have something to do with resolution. Think of a digital photograph as having density. If you're taking a reasonably high quality shot, you can have very high density, which means that the camera has generated lots of pixels to fill in detail on the photo. That number is the megapixel count you looked at when you bought your camera.

Anyway, the best thing you can do to lower the size of the image is to resample it down to 72dpi. That's all you're going to see over the internet, so you might as well make the size of the image file smaller without harming the resolution the viewer sees. Also, if you cut the size to about 400 to 500 pixels wide, you'll still have a decently sized photo.

That said, let me talk about how attached photos work with the database and how they can affect the costs the MOA bears to deal with them. I'm not trying to discourage attaching photos, as they really make things come alive here, but to explain so people know how the forum software works.

When you attach a photo, it gets stored on our servers, so we pay for storage fees. When a user clicks on a thread to look at it, the server sends that image to the user. We pay for bandwidth usage as well.

If a user has linked a smugmug or other image into the post, we don't have to pay to store the image, nor do we have to pay for the bandwidth. What happens is that on the user's desktop, the forum software shows the thread, but inserts the image directly from the image's hosting server.

Does that help? Keep those photos coming, they really do make the whole place feel like real life some times.

When attaching an image or, as you suggest, insert the image with the special icon, where does the image come from? In other forums, I have learned that the image already has to be on the web somewhere...probably a function of the forum software. But in the attach image option, I used the browse feature to locate the image on my local harddrive. Initially, I tried to insert the URL to where the picture was but that didn't work. By your description above, you indicate that I must have the link to the picture in the window...that suggests that the image must be on the web.

Kurt short answer, 'NO' you can't have an 'Attached' picture in two places at the same time on this forum. Don't know why if you deleted in one place that you couldn't do it again, I have. I also changed the name once and that worked too. Something to do with the way this server is set up.

If you use a 'photo sharing web site' like smugmug, you can use the 'Insert Photo' button (that Brad pointed out) and post as many times and places as you want.

It's possible that by deleting it, it's still on the server, there is another way (a better way) to go back to that location it was posted and then go back under the writing area and 'Un-Attach' the picture, but that may be too late now.

Try 'renaming' it on your computer and Attach it again.

Nice /5 - long swing arm, 'eh? I'm into '5's in a pretty big way. Great bikes which ride unlike any of the later airheads. There's just something different about a /5 that feels mostly like the newer airheads, but with a hint of something older. :thumb

My R1200 GS Adventure on the upper river road, between Telico Plains and Cherohola Skyway
Exceeds my expectations
And the pic at this resolution looks a lot better than I thought it would!
But how do I make sure I'm under the right section of the "thread"? Looks like I "posted reply" to the wrong section of the thread????

Well, let's talk about how discussions work here a little bit, then. :D

We have different forums, where we discuss different broad definitions of topics. If you look on the main page, you'll see that each forum has a sort of description about what kind of content goes in it. Each thread is a discussion about something more particular. If you don't see a thread that talks about the topic you want to talk about, you can click the Start a New Thread button and start up a new topic. If you want to talk about your GSA and how much you love it, maybe Oilheads is the spot. If you want to talk about riding it in the beautiful hills of N. Georgia, maybe you want to start a Ride Report and tell us about your great ride. Other folks will respond to your thread by hitting the "Add Reply" button.

Keep on postin'. It's not much of a website if we all just lurk, is it? :ha

Bill. You need to get the whole image location, with the full .jpg extension. This looks like a link to an album.

Try right clicking on the image you like selecting "copy image location".

I followed the instructions but when I get to the point File>Save As that seems ok but How do I put it in my modified ad. I do not see where I can find the Attach file command. Do I right click the image or look somewhere else?
Hope someone can help. Thanks in anticipation
