I was once able to easily add a picture but when I tried this morning, the dialog page for attachments seems to lock up with the message "Attachment in Progress. Can be deleted here. I have the jpg picture sized at 784 x 588 and 123Kb, but still cannot get it to load up when I click the "upload" button.

I solved the problem and thought about just deleting the question above, but then figured someone else might benefit from my solution. I resized both the dimensions by about another 2% and total pixel count was reduced to 98.2Kb then renamed the picture that was giving me the trouble. It uploaded in just seconds.
btw the pic was sized to 768 x 576 and 98.2Kb

You said,
6. When you post your message, use the Attach File item, but don't preview your message! .
I guess I'm thick but on the message format, I see the icon for insert an image, but when I click on that, I get a box that asks for the url. Where do I find the "Attach File Item"

use the paper clip icon it will then open a window and ask for the location of the file with a "browse" button next to it you can use to look at files on your computer.

Rocket Man, thanks for the help. Easy when you know what you're looking for. Trouble is on my display of icons, the paper clip looks more like an exclamation point (to these weak eyes, it is very small). I have an older version of photoshop (5.0) and sized the image down to 300/xxx. Looks like for good scenics, I can double that and it should be just right.

I tried to insert an image, It was a Tiff file and didn't work.
I came to here and read some more and realized Tiff wasn't supported, converted to JPG and was successful.
Whoo-Hoo!
Went back to original post and got an error that my image was previously posted so I couldn't upload it.
OK
Deleted all of my posts here and still can't upload the image as an edit to the original post in gear because it's already loaded. So what if it's for a different subject? I understand server capacity but I deleted the previous post with the attachment. Why isn't it gone?
Rant on:
Can I just say, trying to find info thru a 35 page sticky with my/our limited search capabilities is frustrating.
Can't someone post a sticky, for Mac and Windows each, on just the basics? it may be there somewhere lost in the multiple tests and software upgrades since the original instructions in 2004!? but I can't find it.
I love you people, but this is unfriendly and needs to be cleaned up.
I would put myself in the comfortably intermediate to advanced range of the overall users in this forum of computer proficiency and if I'm having issues, so are many or most.
That said, I have also seen amazing posts with multiple pictures and videos imbedded but I don't know where to start.
Please help us help ourselves.
Rant off.

Tom
The way most folks include multiple images is to first load them on a photo sharing site such as smugmug then link to those.
Not sure about why you can't repost the image you imbeded but if you can point me to the post where it was originally I can probably delete it and then you can try to repost it. Not sure on why you can't post the same picture twice as an attachment, our site admin will have to answer that one, but as linked image you can post the link to it and have it display in more than one post.
Hope that helps.

I deleted the original trying to get to here so I can't take you back all the way.
I've gotten here but it still doesn't address the issue of any clear instructions for posting media that is easily available.
Slogging thru 35 pages for info, which are filled with tests like the ones I deleted (because they didn't work but other have not) is not user friendly.
And as much as I appreciate every word KBasa says, how relevant is the help he gave in 2004? ( I am a Mac user so it might be still relevant, I don't know... :bolt )

I understand what you're saying, let me see what the other mods think, maybe we could split the thread into 2 parts, one for testing and one with just the instructions in another closed sticky, as for using a Mac, I think it would work the same with either operating system since its done thru HTML code, but if there is someone who uses a Mac they would probably know for sure.

Rocketman,
I appreciate your thoughts on this.
I want to graduate to more pictures, multiple pictures in a thread ( which I see a lot of but also postings of frustration that someone couldn't post more than one,) eventually video.
Hell I may even find an avatar that makes sense.
I think splitting the thread makes sense. Create a test thread. as people post what worked for them it could be edited into an appropriate thread in the instructional thread.

as here
[img]http://vagabird.smugmug.com/photos/369097756_rW3fp-M.jpg
you can right-click on the image on your site to get the properties dialog box and cut and paste
also note it must end in a ".jpg" extension (or other graphic extension)
most sites have a way to generate the proper tags so you can then just cut and paste from that into the post on the forum.

thats one way, again the other is to right click on the image on your site, then go to the bottom of the pup-up and click on the "Properties" option at the bottom, this will bring up a "properties" pop-up, then copy the info on the line marked "address", paste that here and put the [img] tags around the text. if you quote any post with a picture you can see the formatting of the [img] tags.

Mac user here, these days.
Best bet, Tom, is to get yourself a free photo hosting account at Flickr.
I use Firefox and when I want to include a photo, I just right click on the image and then select "Copy Image Location". Back to my post here, I click the little yellow button, then use Command+V to paste the image link in.
It's dead simple. Send me a PM if you get stuck.

Test 2
I have had problems at other sites trying to load. How do some people have multiple photos?
The attachment feature of the forum will only allow a single attached item.
To add multiple pictures in a post you need to do a few different things.
IIRC
1. get the source address of the picture from the photo hosting site you use. Right click on the photo you want to post and click on properties. This will give you a pop up. Within the pop up will be an address that will end in jpg Copy that address
2. there are two ways to go from there
a. click on the 'post card looking icon found in the tool bar in the thread posting window. Paste the picture address there and press OK. The program will code and insert you picture in your post.
b. Manually insert the picture yourself by pictureadresshere
It may take some practice to get it down but soon you should be able to share a bunch of pictures with us in a single post. Good luck.

For some reason I can't post photos to several ads I have run. They are 60-80 Kb JPG files I try to upload from my computer. I even turned off the firewall and moved several photos to my desktop, still no can do. I see the file described on the upload button in flea market, it shows uploading. When done I see a broken picture avitar and there is no photo in the ad. The attached photo is one of the files I can't sent to flea market. Any suggestions welcomed!

gr8rind2 - have you checked out the FAQ in the flea market section, if not here is the link http://www.bmwmoa.org/flea/faq.php#image which shoud help.
Also another thing to try, if you haven't already is seeting up a smug mug or photo bucket account and you can link right to the URL. That is in the FAQ's also.
Let us know how it goes.

I had difficulty in infraview trying to resize photos I took with my digital camera to attach to my ad. However, I e-mailed my digital photo's to myself which resized them and then was easily able to add it to my ad. Maybe this will help someone.

This does not require a host.

One easy way to post is to use the digital setting on you camera for email sizing. If your digital camera offers this feature. I do not know if all or most do, as I have to date only owned one camera and it does have this feature. You can post without using an outside source such as Smugbug or Photobucket. This may have been discussed already. Irfanview is okay but the photos come out so small, and it is tedious to use.

I'm not sure if you're saying you should shoot in a smaller size?
I recommend you always shoot in the largest size/quality your camera can take, you can always crop and size down but never the other way! I, of course, learned this lesson the hard way.

Many digital point-and-shoot cameras have a feature to downsize photos for "email". Every implementation of this feature I've seen preserves the original (and I agree with Gail - shoot the highest resolution you can), and creates a new smaller file.

It's hard to tell exactly, but there's no space between "test" and "http...." so the program didn't know what to do with the long string. After typing the long string, you must have then attached your picture properly.
Thanks Kurt

Well, I tried the same thing...see my previous post. I typed the word test, clicked on the icon to insert an image, pasted in the URL of the image that was already on the web, and then hit submit reply. I didn't do any "dragged it to the box". By using the icon to submit an image and providing the URL for that image on the web, that's all that needs to be done. I suppose I could have put a space after the word test which might have then move the image to below the word...not sure.

Did you read the first few posts in this forum? The only way that I've done is to first have a picture out on the web somewhere. Second, use the "Insert Image" icond at the top of the message box where you're typing. Once that box comes up, insert the URL for where your picture is. Click OK and you should be done.
For people with on-line photo accounts, like smugmug or flikr, there's supposed to be other ways of including more pictures per post. I don't have those kinds of accounts, so I don't really know.

This ain't exactly intuitive (at least not immediately) on the flickr site, but it can be done. The good news is you can pick the size you want to post. Nifty!
When you're looking at a photo, just above the photo is an icon/link named "All Sizes." Follow this.
From the sizes (Square, Thumbnail, Small, Medium, Large, Original), select the size you want, which will display that size on the screen.
Copy / paste all of the text in the "Copy and paste this HTML into your webpage" box into your forum post. The photos should appear in the "Preview Post" screen.

Works on flickr video also!
When viewing a video, follow the "embed" icon / link
Grab all of the text in the "Copy and paste this HTML into your webpage" box and paste it into your forum post
But there's a catch! A direct post will leave the CLSID (an internal program ID used by Windows) for the Flash player visible in your post.
<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="400" height="300" data="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"> <param name="flashvars" value="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=1985ed0ef8&photo_id=3467508123"></param> <param name="movie" value="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377"></param> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000"></param> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377" bgcolor="#000000" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=1985ed0ef8&photo_id=3467508123" height="300" width="400"></embed></object>
If you remove the following text from your post prior to posting, everything will come out ok:
classid="clsid: D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"
<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="400" height="300" data="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377"> <param name="flashvars" value="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=1985ed0ef8&photo_id=3467508123"></param> <param name="movie" value="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377"></param> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000"></param> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377" bgcolor="#000000" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=1985ed0ef8&photo_id=3467508123" height="300" width="400"></embed></object>
What are the negative affects of removing the CLSID? Not sure. If you can see the last video - which was posted without a CLSID - then it works fine (IE / Firefox / Windows can still figure it out).
Happy Posting!

Lets try again, What setting do you guys use on your cameras for resolution size?
20774
03-17-2010, 06:26 AM
I think most people are using one of the higher resolution settings on their cameras when taking the original picture. But when posting on the forum, it's necessary, at least strongly suggested, that you reduce the resolution so that it will fit easily on the screen without going past the margins, requiring a viewer to scroll to see it. Generally, something like 800x600 is just fine. Note that computer monitors have very poor resolution to start with so putting a super fine resolution picture up for viewing is a waste of everyone's time and bandwidth.

There's a Hotel de la Gare in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Could that be it?

Hi Kurt,
Yes you are quite right there is a Hotel de la Gare in Clermont-Ferrand, France
but that is not the one in the picture.
The one pictured is south of Le Puy-En-Velay on the D906 near the village of
Villefort ( I think ), so not that far from where you thought.

I went thru the first few pages (all from 2004) of this long thread - but can I still only upload one jpeg pix/ posting without using smugmug or equal?

From what I understand, yes, only one picture can be uploaded unless you are using a web hosting site. If you use a web hosting site, you can then put numerous links into one post. I actually don't have an account with a web hosting company, but I just have some small website provided by my ISP. That is enough for me to host several pictures.

Kurt is right - if you attach a picture in a post using the MOA server, you can only upload 1 image. For web image hosters there are several ones you can get a free account, I use photobucket.

Is there something wrong with the formatting?

You are almost there.
If you use the attachement feature, then you can only attach one item.
However if you paste in the link you can do many:
Here is an example (and when you do a reply you can see the coding):

Sorry to be so dense ( a consequence of being 72 I guess), but what do you enter into "manage attachments" when creating a new posting or reply? My ISP has my picture files in a folder. I'm entering the url from the toolbar that I get when displaying one of my photos, and pasting into the "manage attachments" thing, but as a result am allowed only one url and one picture. I have reduced the displayed file sizes to like 60Kb/ pix but still no go.

Let me try this...I'm going to use your image but put the image tags around it manually. Whenever I do this, I typically type "" (without the quotes) followed without spaces by the URL, and end with "" (without the quotes). Here goes:

If I correctly understand what you are saying, I'm trying to embed the image url in the text of my reply simply using brackets & img like this:
blah - blah http://home.earthlink.net/~daneth1/images/IMG_5869-1.jpg blah blah2.
but when I preview the post, I don't see any image between the blah blahs.
Is there something else I should be doing (obviously!) or is it my host's format?

You need a "/" in front of that last "img" as in "[/img]". That should do it.

How do I post more an one photo at a time? That was me starting at post number 712. 20774 steered me thru the process, though this 72 yr old had some trouble understanding him.
At any rate, this is how I'd describe it to another non-savy Internet user:
First re size your .jpg picture files. Your camera's software may have this capability or you can google for picture file resizing & download it as freeware. Maybe you can do it with your e-mail program by sending the file to yourself. Just work with one typical picture and preview-post & preview-post it until you find the combination of file resizing that you want. Note that at this point you will want to create a separate folder that has only downsized picture files on it. Don't dump the original files of course. You'd be surprised how much a file size can be truncated without much quality loss.
You have to find some web site that will host your multiple pictures on their site, such that the BMWMOA website can automatically go to that site and down load the pictures on an as needed basis. Your internet provider probably already provides this service for a reasonable number of pictures at no charge. Mine, for example will host 100Mb at no charge, but it was agony to get it set up.
Once you can call up your pictures at an Internet address, you can then insert said picture(s) in the text of your posting. The format is "[IMGxxxxxxIMG]" without the quotation marks, where xxxxxxx is the url that any user would have to put in the Internet to see that picture.
Practise the postings. There will be a lot of resizing of files etc before you get it right. 20774 feel free to jump in or correct this.:brow

That all sounds good, but with one exception. The format is "xxxxxx". That should get 'r done!

I've read this thread and tried to download the site recommended, but its filled with everything but what I need. Can't I use Picasa with which I'm familiar?
20774

I don't see why not. Once you have pictures on Picasa (you probably do already), then you use the methods described to either attached a single picture per post, or use the tools with Picasa, etc., to link in multiple pictures as needed.
Give it a try and see how it goes.

What about shutterfly? I'm using the IMG with the quotes as you described above, and it's getting to where I get the little blue icon, but this is shutterfly's address:
http://1978r1007restoration.shutterfly.com/pictures/1224#1222
And this is what you get when you try it...
http://1978r1007restoration.shutterfly.com/pictures/1224#1222
I noticed there's no "jpg" at the end...does anyone else use shutterfly?

I don't think your initial URL is going to work. I went to that URL which is the front page for a couple of pictures. I clicked on one of your pictures, clicked on the "direct link" on the right side, and then pasted that into this post. But I had to add "" at the front and "" at the end, without using the double quotes. That lets the picture display within the post.
