I have a '76 R90/6 mostly stock but with 'S' front & rear ends. Bought it with Pirelli Sport Demons on but now need new skins. Problem is I need a very versatile tire. I like to ride moderately fast in mountain terrain but also have wife & bags onboard about 1/2 time. Sport Demon shows a lot of wear on the rear from this. Could I get some suggestions and possible sources from the community?

The Bridgestone Spitfire S11 is as good as any I have used.

There are three companies making (selling in USA actually) tires for your Airhead

Michelin
Continental
Metzeler

If a tire is not 3.25-19 for front and 4.00X18 for rear it's not a tire made for Airheads. There are NO metric equivalents for these sizes.

I used a laser on the front and a ME88 on the rear of my airheads with good results. I think the 88 is now an 880.

Thanks 35303 for that link; it was really informative!
It did have recommendations that were for tires other than the 3 major brands mentioned by Ikchris such as Dunlop. I currently have Pirellis on it also. How up-to-date is the article and your info, Ikchris? I expect to stay with the recommended 4.00-18 or 110/90 rear and a 3.25-19 front tho my current Pirelli rear is 120/90. I have also looked closely at the Avon Roadrider series. Comments? Halaciousnm

Avon Speedmaster front 3.25x19 and Avon SM MKII rear 4.00 x 18 worked well on a 74 R90/6 which I had a few years ago. And they were relatively easy to get on as they are a tube-type tire.

I believe the new Avon Roadrider are available in the 3.25 and 4.00 inch sizes.

Just put new Metzeler Lasertec 3.25 x19 front and 4.00 x 18 rear on my R100/7. They are a very nicely made and finished tire and seem to work very well on the '78 R100/7 but as they are also a tubeless design, which can be used with tube-type rims, they are stiffer and therefore harder to put on. The ones I purchased (in Canada) were made in Brazil.

Very deep tread on the back one and they work OK on gravel as well as pavement.
