I've got a little John Deere LT 155 lawn tractor. I wish I had a bigger one (who doesn't?) :blush .
Anyway, now that the grass is actually growing again in this part of the country, I thought I'd do my mid-season maintenance on the tractor. I pulled the deck off, greased the mower deck pulley spindles, sharpened the blades, and then decided I'd change the oil. Much to my chagrin, the oil filter was on too tight (I can usually twist them off with my hand). The last service had been done at the dealer, so at least I had someone to blame. Then, I tried a variety of oil filter wrenches that I've accumulated over the years for the cages to see if they would fit. None of them would. Then I thought, what about that wrench for the GS? :idea The "Hazet 2169" that I paid some ridiculous price for 10 years ago. Well guess what? It fit perfectly! So if you've got a John Deere and an Oil Head filter wrench, you might save yourself the agony of having to drive a screwdriver through an oil filter.

Deskunking your thread for you. Great job. Now go cut the grass and be glad you have a yard big enough to need a riding mower.

It depends on which engine the John Deere has on it. I have or have had John Deeres with Kohler, Onan and Kawasaki engines on them and my neighbor has one with a Briggs on it. The Kohler and Kawasaki can use the same oil filter as the K-bike and V6 Toyota pickup. The Kawasaki and Briggs takes a different one.

The editor of Airmail, B. Jan, had his bike painted in JD colors. It was featured as a color cover a little while back.

changing the oil on my 07 lt. cover had one bolt very hard to remove as it was under the center stand bracket. now i can't get it started to replace it. any suggestions?

Who was the last person to change the oil? If it was a dealership contact them.
Is one of the cap screws threads all buggered up?
Have you tried a different cap screw in the difficult to thread hole?
Do you have access to a set of metric taps?

can't tell that the threads are damaged but will retap anyway. dealer did change last time. the center stand makes the one bolt hard to remove.
At least two things - the accessory power plugs work in both (and the Deere ones are quite a bit cheaper!)

A friend of mine was in the UP of Michigan last summer on his '85 R80 and encountered an electrical problem. The only remotely close resemblance of a repair shop was a local John Deere dealer....they diagnosed the problem as a bad coil, took one off their shelf (not sure which model tractor), installed it in the R80 and he was on his way with no more problems! :D

So, it's early spring, it's still nippy, and the wind is howling off the ocean. What's a John Deere man to do? Wear your 'stich, of course.

Google says Deere's made in Sanaswadi, India which I don't know much about but a long ways from me no doubt. I used to work with people that could talk about their mowers for hours, now a thread and I'm actually reading it? Just goes to show that I need to get back to my jobs...:laugh

I think it depends on which Deere you buy..
If you look a the Pseudo John Deeres the likes of Home Depot and Lowes sell, they are EXACTLY the same as the Husqy, and the other three brands sitting next to them. i would assume they are all built in the same place, where-ever that maybe.
Now go to a John Deere dealer and look at their models, and you'll see a night and day diffrerence in the build quality and the engineering, and from what I understand is they are ALL built in Moline.
I have the JD2305 with a Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel, same one John Deere Marine has been putting in sail boats for about 40 years. This baby will last a few lifetimes, but alas, I need a bigger one. Luckily the local John Deere dealer is REAL local, within 1/4 mile and during (BMW) Tech Days at the house more than once they've provided replacement parts.

I live in Iowa where tractors are often in evidence more than motorcycles and JD is more visible than any other brand. Tractor collecting and refurbishing is paramount among many. Photo shows some tractors going home after a show. I was broken down by roadside (got it repaired) when I took this photo. I am certain there are a few John Deere's in the entourage!

I haven't mowed my grass in 9 months.
The only push mower I have is a reel mower (for the fun of it). If you have any sort of a yard, ditch the push mower or ditch the rider mower. Get a decent commercial mower. 36" is good. You'll see why.

36" is kids' play. My 240 has a heavy-duty 3-blade 48" deck and I'm thinking I need at least a 52" deck pulled by a motor with some GRUNT. I like the looks of a V-twin, and I like the idea of 25-30hp. eeeeup. Tool Time! Or, maybe I should use that spare R100 motor, with the cylinders sticking out of the hood on both sides. Trouble is, the mowers have a vertical shaft. Maybe I could adapt a horizontal shaft to a big gearbox with PTOs sticking out to run the belts for final drive, mower deck, etc. Or, how about adapting the gearbox to a shaft drive to the rear end, with a shortened F250 rear axle?
Or, maybe I'll just keep on riding the 240.

To the best of my knowledge, the history is somewhat like the following...
The period with Deutz was very short (~5yrs), the exchange rate was favorable for the Germans, but the U.S. equipment market was headed for the toilet, so Deutz eventually sold the trademark (name) to the holding company AGCO in Georgia. Today, Deutz is part of the SAME-Deutz-Fahr group which also makes Lamborghini tractors (Laverda is also an ag. equipment manufacturer).
Prior to the sale of AC Ag. to Deutz, the two companies were teamed for several years and you could buy Deutz badged equipment at some AC dealerships. Prior to the Deutz partnership, AC sold medium sized (50-hp and lower) tractors produced in Romania by Fiat and AC construction equipment was marketed under the name Fiat-Allis. Interestingly, it was rumored that Omar Quaddafi, had a large interest in the construction equipment part of Fiat at that time. Prior to AC marketing the Fiat products, Oliver, then Hesston, sold the same products with their nameplates.
A separate division of AC, Simplicity, produced lawn tractors and garden equipment with Simplicity, AC and Deutz-Allis nameplates. At the start of the AC death spiral, Simplicity was quickly sold-off to a group of investors, since it was the most profitable part of AC in the early 1980's. Today, Simplicity is, I think, part of Briggs & Stratton.

Actually, Mr. Happy Puppet has been in hiding since we were thrown out of New Zealand by a tour operator for unacceptable dinnertime conversation.
But it's time to come out. I'm training Mr. Happy Puppet to drive the 240. Pretty soon he will be doing all the mowing.
