Nothing official yet, but I've been hearing rumors that it will be shown at the Milan motorcycle show in November with a US release in the first half of '08.
Pricing will probably be pretty close to the ST.

Looking forward to that F 800 GS. Saw some pics from South Africa of the thing.
Can't wait to see it in person. I won't be the main rider of it, but I sure hope it works for my wife. She has a 650 CS for now.
We test rode the F800's recently. I love the engine, oil and filter arrangement in particular, but overall, not quite the bike we're looking for, mainly sitting stance and exhaust pipe location were issues..needs better heat shielding behind the foot rests in particular.
But the weight, power and smoothness of it was ideal for my wife's shorter stance, but like the CS, would need more windshield and she'd like to sit more upright like she does on the CS.
Pros and cons for the thing, but I think that will be a great powerplant on that series. I'd like to see an RT type touring varient eventually on the 800, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Love the Red color on the S version, but not available on the ST....yet? Could swap out the forks etc, but too much trouble and money just for a color!
If the stance on the GS works well for my wife, we'll be snagging one soon next year. Then up to Wyoming we go...

BMW build an F-800-RT, now thats an idea. My first beemer was a 1978 R-80 full dresser. Still one of the best bikes I ever owned. If you do moniter these pages Mr BMW people, then you build this bike and I will by one. I wount hold my breath though. Maybe a GS then, but please increase the gas tank size. Thanks :deal

Playing on the recent GM commercial for the H3, I'd have to agree to a recent article by a woman who reviewed a 650 GS in Arizona. Stated that it was a bit high compared to previous models she owned and rode. Her overall comment was why do they keep building the bikes taller? There are some people who are below the 5'-10" average for men and 5' 5" or so for women. So, "why don't they build a smaller one?"
With the F 800 power plant, I think BMW has reached a necessary niche in the market, not just for marketing with the competition for a mid-size bike. Now they just need to have more options wrapped around that power plant.
The R and K series is just too much bike for some people, my wife in particular. While the F 600's are not quite suited to long-haul riding (some will argue with that). A whole day of single cylinder thumping does add up.
But the "Ninja" style riding stance of the current F 800 series just isn't suited to everyone, but it is the first step forward with this engine. It will be interesting to see what happens with the GS next?

That is right I plan to put atleast a hundred down so I can get a pick of the litter. If it is too small for me I will let it go. I just wished the X Challenge had a larger tank. Did you take any of the 800s for a spin ? Great bikes !
Yes. Hermy gave me the 800ST for a week while my 650GS was in for servie. My hubby was really hoping I would like it and move up in hp. It was fun to ride and it's a great bike in the twisties. But for a long ride, I just couldn't do it. After about 2 hours, it was hell on my knees. While it's not as forward as the S, it's still pretty much a sport bike.
I'm holding out hope for the 800 GS.

Now, I need a plan on how to budget it with little to no wife involvement. This is the bike I have been waiting for.

So can anyone give any substantial proof of any supposed viewing/ release/ due within border...
...Any dates of confirmation of anything to do with the 800GS....Yet.
I hear rumor after wishful thinking, but no one has come up with the pudding.
Reason being, someone wants to buy my 650GS. I cannot be with out a bike for very long. If this is coming out as soon as some speculate (within 2-3 months)...I can buy a cheap cage for the commute to work this winter.
If we are talking a year...I may have to buy an airhead...Maybe.:thumb
I personally have been watching and searching the web constantly waiting for this potential new bike that would be an addition to my garage. I always wanted a GS model and this particular bike would be an affordable alternatinve to a new bike, with warranty and reliabilty. I just can't afford a new 1200 GS.
I am keeping my eyes open.

I'm just curious. Why would you prefer an 800GS over a 1200GS? I had a 650GS and liked it a lot but it was just a bit smaller than I wanted. I don't understand if the 800GS would be that much of a step up from the 650. I appreciate your comments.

The appeal the idea of an F800GS is it answers the Goldie Locks problem. I am a large man and the F650 seems a bit small to handle my long range riding with gear and me on board. The R-GS can handle that with little or no problem but the bike is a bit ponderous. The F800GS offers the hope for the power to make getting there enjoyable, lightness to make it fun once you arrive to play and the platform to hang it all together on.
The engine is up to it. The anticipated weight is right. My question is will the ergonomics of the bike work.

Imagine a 650 thats maybe 20-30 lbs lighter.
30-35 more HP.
Excellent range per tank ~250 miles+.
Good seat height.
Great clearance.
Better suspension.
Smoother engine response.
21" front tire.
Lacking FDF possibilitiy.
So you see why I must own one...
It very well could turn out to be the best "Long way: Down/Over/through/Up/Out any which way but loose, Bike..."

We can imagine all we want, the truth is that bike would leave the "faithful" with nothing to complain about!:D
My bet is the real thing will have too little range for some, be too high for most, and have a suspension that's going to require work for serious off-roading.
None of it neccesarily "deal breakers" but I doubt it's going to be "THE BEST BIKE EVAAR" either.
IIRC, a dealer posted in the ADVRider thread, or maybe it was on the F800 site, that he'd actually ridden one at a dealer intro in EU. And yes Martha, it's set for release at EICMA in November.

I think we can safely assume that BMW will reveal R and GS versions of the F800.
So what other variants would they produce? Maybe something like a smaller Megamoto? Maybe one with a really low seat height to help get people on BMWs? Maybe an RT style full coverage bike? Maybe something like a smaller HP2?

That 650 and 800 look to me like versions of the same bike- too bad I can't quite read the lettering on one of them. But in any case, they look good and I like the way some styling-cues give them some resemblance to the 1200- makes the GS's seem more like a family.

Real pics, or computer generated?
Looks like the F800 has a chain as opposed to the belt drives of the existing F800 models. I suppose chain drive is more desirable for any "dirty" work.
Yeah, if they deliver an F800GS at a price under or at the $10K mark, they may lose some of their R1200GS sales. But, then again, we in the U.S. LOVE our displacement...

The more I look at those F bikes, the odder the powerplant looks to me.
They really look more like the G650 plant than the F800 mill. The F800 motor is canted pretty well forward, like the new K12 motor. These powerplants are really vertical, which makes me believe that these are not what they claim to be.
Anybody have a good picture of an F800 to compare them with? Something's not right with those photos.
Edit: Here's one. Compare the angle of the cylinders as they relate to the line formed by the oil pan with the photos above. These bikes don't share the same motor. In fact, compare the area ahead of the clutch cover between the bikes. They're not even close. I think we're being hoodwinked here.
I think those bikes up top are really 650s, not the 800.

The powerplant in the G650 looks much more like what we see in the bikes above. Additionally, the G motor already has a mounting system that would enable a lattice frame.
Look at the frame attachment points on the 650 motor. It lines up with what we see above. The F800 has a rear attachment point that joins to the rear of the engine case, in the center, out of sight and inboard of the swingarm pivots.
Yeah, those bikes above are not the new F800. They are, more likely, G650 variants. The top one looks like a low, street version and the second one looks like a replacement for the current F650GS.
There's no way those are F800 motors.

These photos could be photochop, or some Cray supercomputer CAD program used by BMW. Due to the imminent release of the bike (next week) my bet is that they are publicity photos, which often don't REALLY represent the physical bike.
I'm drawing parallels to some '70s Brit bike "PhotoRealist" publicity shots that looked just like photographs, but when you looked closely, there wasn't any wiring or brake/clutch cables. There is also a famous Ducati press shot, of a Scrambler IIRC, that is completely back-asswards, i.e. the exhaust is on the left and the chain on the right.
We'll see. By this time next week it will be all over Raptors and Rockets.
I'm putting my money on:
1) F800 GS
2) F800 GS/PD
3) F650 GS
4) X450

In European countries I am pretty sure there is a separate license tier for 500cc- 750cc which means the F650 Twin would fit just fine. It is cheaper to make a 650twin based on the 800 then continue renewing the jigs and assembly tools to make an aging F650 Single. I think we will see a 650 twin as it's no heavier then current F650 and will produce a little more power and use the same serviceable parts as the 800 which is better on the inventory management side.

Its just a-little bit bigger than the one I have...

Well, you'd sell your bike, right?
Hummm, I guess...
Well if you find out you really like it, just get it...

I think it actually works out in the F800's favor. I thought the F800's were coming in in the high 70's at the rear wheel and the R12GS around 85hp, but with an extra near 100 lbs. :dunno

With the dollar going the way it is it is going to be generally more expensive to buy any foreign goods except from those countries that have pegged their currency to the dollar. And even from those countries eventually because they won't continue to take the hit of the sagging dollar forever.
One of the strategies BMW announced at their October reorganization press conference was pegging all of their contracts in US dollars. This market is seen as graying but is still a large important market for BMW. The business strategy they adopted may help them to price in a way that will keep them in there current market slot as prices go.

I don’t make the news I just relay it. If I was a Canadian I wouldn’t be happy. I took the price of a R1200GS from the US, Canadian and German sites as an example and converted them into US dollars: 14460 in US, 19256 Can, and 17950 DE.
And yet BMW Canada just reported sales for October:
Record October sales for BMW, MINI and Motorrad.
11/01/2007
Whitby, Ontario. BMW Group Canada reported today an October sales record of 2,098 BMW and MINI vehicles, an increase of 2.3% over October 2006. Year-to-date, BMW Group Canada sales are up 17.4% compared to the same period last year, which translates to a new year-to-date record of 23,096 units sold.
BMW Brand: BMW brand achieves best ever October sales.
The BMW brand also set an October sales record with 1,783 units sold, an increase of 1.0% over October 2006. The BMW 3 Series Cabriolet, with BMW’s first retractable hard top roof, led the way with the largest sales increase in October of 468.8%.
Sales of the X5 Sports Activity Vehicle were strong with an increase of 55.9% over October 2006. BMW 5 Series sedan sales increased 50.6% compared to October 2006.
The BMW brand set a year-to-date record of 19,944 units sold, an increase of 18.5% over the same period last year.
“The BMW sales incentive program that we implemented in October is keeping customers buying at their local BMW retailer,” said Lindsay Duffield, President and CEO, BMW Group Canada. “Our record sales results in October demonstrate the strong value proposition in Canada.”
BMW Motorrad Canada sales were up 47.1% in October compared to October 2006. BMW Motorrad Canada set an October sales record with 75 motorcycles sold. Year-to-date, BMW Motorrad has increased sales by 29.2% to 1,475 units compared to the same period last year with.
BMW Certified Pre-Owned sales for October were 692 units, down slightly by 6.7%. Total pre-owned sales for October were 849, a decrease of 9.0% compared to October 2006. Year-to-date, BMW Certified Pre-Owned sales are up 15.0% compared to the same period last year which translates to 5,518 units sold. In total, BMW Pre-Owned year-to-date sales are up 7.4% to 7,372 units sold.
I’m glad I don’t have to make sense out of all of this by setting pricing strategy for BMW world wided.

There was an interesting tidbit in one of the Porsche magazines I get regarding this subject. In 2008 Porsche NA is reducing the price on their vehicles 10% in Canada because of the weak dollar. It'll be 8% on vehicles and 2% on the common add-ons.

The F 800 GS has its own individual style, while having the obvious visual characteristics that say BMW. The beak front ’guard, the twin headlights and the aggressive purposeful stance set the scene for a motorcycle that is destined to be one of the most successful BMW models.
The motor that was launched on the F 800 S and ST sits higher in the tubular manganese-alloy steel frame with only an 8.3º forward lean angle, this allows for greater front suspension travel and enhanced weight distribution. It produces 63 kW/85 hp at 7,500 rpm with 83 Nm of torque developed at 5,700 rpm, 90% of which is available at just 4,000 rpm. The band of power is achieved using different cams and valve overlaps from the first two F Series twins. The air intakes are placed above the motor in the cool airstream, which is good for combustion and away from dirt and water when out in the bush. The air box is located under the ‘tank’ area and feeds directly into the injection system. Other changes to the motor used in the GS include a redesigned clutch cover that gives more foot room and the relocation of the water pump and hose mean more efficient cooling. These changes save 1 kg when compared to the S and ST motor.
The tubular space frame has the engine as an integral component and is designed for strength when off-road and positive and dynamic performance when on the bitumen or at walking pace in technical and difficult terrain. The narrow sub-frame carries the under seat 16 L fuel tank, the seat and pannier mounts.
The 45 mm upside-down telescopic front forks with 230 mm travel are complemented by 215 mm of rear travel. The rear wheel is held in place by a double-sided die-cast aluminium swing arm and is controlled by a central strut with path-dependent damping. O-ring chain, as opposed to the belt used on the road models, provides the drive. Wheels are oriented for off-road use, 21 inch up front 17 at the rear.
The exhaust weighs only 8.5 kg and as you would expect it is EU3 compliant. It has the CAT built into the exhaust so the 8 L muffler can be easily replaced and to help clean up the exhaust gases a secondary air system is fitted.
To pull the 207 kg (wet) (178 dry) GS to a halt, twin 300 mm disc are fitted up front and 265 mm at the rear and there is the option of switchable ABS. It is about time BMW stopped mucking about and made it a standard feature on all models as it is on BMW cars.
The standard seat height of 880 mm will give a panoramic view of the scenery but thanks to the innovative seat design it is possible to get a good and safe grip on terra firma when stationary. There is an 850 mm option for those with a shorter inside leg.
There is a full list of options and accessories including an OnBoard computer, panniers, top box and tank bags etc, all designed to take rider and machine around the block or the world in practical style and comfort. The F 800 GS, which will be available in Sunset Yellow/Black or Dark Magnesium Metallic Matt, is destined to be a continuation of GS success that began with the R 80 G/S in 1980.

Why does BMW think it is acceptable to make these things so freakin high in the seat...33.4 inches or 34.6? That's nuts. The average inseam in the US is only 32...then you have to account for the spread when sitting.

I predict that this is the "holy grail" that BMW owners have been looking for....less weight than the 1200GS, more power than the 650GS. Heck it might even make the 1200 GS obsolete. And it's price will undoubtedly attract people who would have never even considered the brand.
The F650 is going to be identical....just a bored down version of the 800 twin. Might spring on one of those too. I know my original 650 thumper had plenty of giddy-up (47 hp) and the new one being a twin will probably top 60 HP The 800's already out get close to 60 MPG. I can't imagine what the what the gas mileage will be on the 650's. My old one got close to 70!

Thanks for the pictures. What a machine. Might have to sell the 1150gs, R60/6 and the WR250 to afford it, though.
Or maybe just wait a few years and buy used.
Let me know when the first used (and farkled) one is for sale.

Here's the secret question:
How can write off a portion of this bike as being work related?
:lurk
knary,
Buy it, paint it, offer the painting for sale, and claim part or all of the purchase price as modeling fees. Reads good to me based on your website. Intended to promote thought not as legal advice, but it could work as such if you consult a tax professional - I am not one, but you asked the question. :bolt

A couple things stand out.
1. That's not a light bike - for that kind of riding. You can see how much the rider had to move around to balance that thing.
2. The slow speed crawl up that hill makes my heart go pitter-patter. That's exactly the place where my 1150 with its dry clutch is less than happy.

it may not be light, but that bike goes through sand way better than an oilhead gs.

In case it hasn't already been linked:
http://www.webbikeworld.com/BMW-motorcycles/bmw-f-800-gs/
I see that the dashboard has a multifunction trip computer.. Any chance of a gear indicator for this F-bike? My brother has an F650GS, but my 1150GS is a bit too heavy and tall for him.. The F800GS looks like the perfect compromise (except for its lack of shaft drive :p)

Yah' the comfort package has the heated grips and computer that shows gear/outside temp (as opposed to inside?) fuel/ etc...
What I'd really like to know is...Are the brakes linked?
When I hit the button to turn off the ABS I DO NOT want my brakes linked...
I believe this is the way the big GSs are??? Unless you got them with out ABS...Correct?

How about showing us the bike in "real" sand...not the soft dirt in the picture....

Scott,
Consult with your tax advisor on biz write offs.
I write off my biz mileage (Mileage between biz stops), and I depreciate my bike based on my ratio of biz mileage to to total. That ratio of biz milage applies to fuel, maintenance, insurance, and farkels.
I am as curious about the 800gs as anyone else because I am thinking of downsizing from an 1150R.

I can tell you the brakes on not linked on the S or the ST. So what makes you wonder if they would be linked here? I'd bet not!

I told myself that I was going to take some vacation time in '08 and put the miles on the RT and Ural. Go to places that I have wanted to go to for a long time and do nothing but play tourist for a few weeks. To this end I cut corners and did without and paid off a few bills early.
All to no avail.
Tuesday the F800GS is announced. The next day my name is put on one and I should get my hands on it in July.
Yellow/Black, 95% +/- of the accessories. Don't know the final $$$ and don't care, I just want one!

Helen's #2 on the wait list in Austin( a young fellow on another F650 walked in two minutes ahead of her and got on the list first )
The F650 will be upgraded to this twin...told us March-April...expect June! The 650 does all well, this just looks like it will be a little more zippier, and keep up with the 1200 a tad better.

Based on available data from the announcements, I whipped up a bit of a comparo on these two GS offerings. Someone, somewhere had asked, why buy an F800GS when you can buy an R1200GS. Well, for one thing, there is over $4000 in difference, based only on the MSRP I've found on web sites (no accessories, charges, etc.). You may have different info, so accept apologies for any mistakes. :banghead
Attached is the spreadsheet, MS Word .doc format

Very nice, job, Doug. But, there is one piece of info missing, though: the weight of the R1200GS. I believe it is 225 kg so 85/178 vs 105/225 is a 0.4775 vs 0.4666 power to weight ratio, and, 65 lbs torque over 178 and 77 over 225 is a 0.365 vs 0.342 torque to weight ratio, both in favor of the F800S, no?

In reading the specs ,noticed the engine cylinder angle will be different from the S an ST. and a larger clutch cover housing. That seems odd for the same series to me, but there seems to be a reason regarding clearances.
What I heard late this afternoon from a not-to-be-named "insider" is BMWNA asked for the delay so the remaining stock of the F650s could be sold off in the weak (dare I say the "R" word, as in recession). Which I also heard is why Monday Warner Bros. ditched the HD DVD format in favor of Blu-Ray discs after its contract expired May 1, 2008 at the CES Show in LV. I head to the Show tomorrow for my 20th year.

Tweety1, I've heard also about the need to dump the leftover F650's but I'm not so sure. If that was the case would they not still sell the F800 worldwide? It seems there will be no F800GS anywhere. I'm wondering if, similar to the K-bike debacle, they have found a fatal flaw to correct?

I did not hear about a fatal flaw, but the need to dump the F650s is largest here, so we get the last F800GS after EU, SA, and maybe AU. They all have stronger currency right now, some MUCH stronger.
PS, remember this when you vote November 2008! This is another one of those "it's the economy, stupid" election years.

No F800GS For You!
Here is an alternative suggestion other than
Bitch
Moan &
Whine
here which will not get you a bowl or soup or an F800GS
The Customers Communication number at BMW is:
1-800-831-1117
Better yet send a letter to:
Corporate Communication
BMW Motorrad USA
PO Box 1227
Westwood, NJ 07675
But, complaining here will not get us any soup or motorcycles.
And politeness will go much further. If someone comes up with a nice draft letter to share why not post it here for others us to copy and paste?
