What kinds of tire changers do you all have at home? Good ones? Bad?

Harbor Freight and Mojo lever. Works for me. Also a Marc Parnes balancer.

Do you use anything on the wheel clamps to protect the alloy rim?

Here's the modifications I made to my HF Tire changer. Works really well, no scratches.

I also use a Mojo lever, however I have ordered the Nomar bar as well.

I have the Coats 220. It works great, but I do have to work to protect the rims.
Nomar makes a conversion for it that would make it awesome, which at some point I will buy. If you want quick and easy, the Nomar is the way to go... but it isn't cheap.

Nice mods Rog - very creative!
The ol' bike inner tube trick just isn't working for protecting the rims... :( so I may have to try the cutting board idea....

Thanks guys. I've looked at and even used a Nomar tire changer. IMHO the Nomar is the best thing going for the home shop. Right now I don't have the spare cash, but as soon as I do, one will be bolted to my garage floor.
Right now, my highly modified HF changer does the job. BTW, I have a bunch of rim savers I keep handy. I use a Beemer Balancer or a Marc Panes, either or.

Ditto except I use the NoMar lever. I dipped the HF wheel clamps in PlastiKote to protect the rims. I also have a couple of pairs of levers (long and short) and some rim protectors that I use as needed to stop the tire bead from walking out, or to get that particularly stiff tire on.

Big C Clamp, 2 blocks of wood and a couple of bars that came with my 85 K bike.
