The question of the day
What is the top speed that you have hit with your motorcycle ?????
I am a new rider and have been licensed under one year.
My first and only bike is an F 800 ST. ( 07 )
I have only had it since April 25 /07, so I haven't had the ....... s to really open it up and see what it can do.
I really do want to say what I have taken it to, but am having second thoughts about this forum being monitored.
OK ! oh hell 140 KMS per hour. I am sure I am having some laughter out there. Some of the riders I have met have been well into the 200 KMs.
Good for them. I will never try it. I am only ten short years away from my pension.

If you don't have a tremendous desire to go REAL fast then your 140Kph is just fine.... Plenty fast enough to feel the breeze..........Pete

157 mph on a CBR 954RR (on a garmin GPS). Clear sight lines, no driveways or entrances and corn fields about 3 inches tall.
The Gixxer 1000 was pulling away...:fight

Being a self-acclaimed new rider who has only been riding about 3 months, do us all a favor and worry less about speed and more about riding safely so that we can enjoy your company for years to come.
They all go fast enough to kill ya.
I am not saying that everyone on here doesn't do it. We all have. Since I have only ever had BMWs the fastest I have ever been on mine was about 118 indicated on my 2000 R1100R. Plenty fast for me.

Normaly I keep my opinions to myself, but I would like to share with the group some photos I saw today.
A young(I think) man riding a Kawasaki croch rocket ran into the back of an 18 wheeler that was running 70 mph. Police estimated the motorcycle speed at 150+. His head had punched through the steel rear door and his body was dangling with his feet on the ground. The truck drug him 1/4 mile before the driver noticed the debris in his rear view mirror and stopped. Yes, he was dead.
I can't speak of the western states (haven't been there), but no state east of Arkansas are the highways clear of traffic to run that fast.

I'll admit to it on here. I've ran between 105 and 110 on my R80/7. It was on a straight, lightly trafficked section of road; early afternoon on a Sunday. There was actually a truck that blew past me (as I was already doing about 81mph), so I jumped on the throttle, passed 100mph (GPS indicated), and then backed off. Part of it wa sjust to say I went over 100 on a bike. It wasn't a lot different than 90, or even 85. I can't see a reason to do it again anytime, soon.
When I was freezing cold on the James Bay Road, I ran at 145kph (90mph) for a long while (slowing down for the bumps), and that seemed plenty fast, for me.
The thing is, if you can safely go that fast on the road, it's probably not a very exciting section of road. I'd rather be on a section of road where 45mph is excessively fast, and turns are all over the place. As for going over 100, if there are other cars on the road, you are risking more than just your own life. Not worth it.

... because I do not want my kids to be prematurely rich at my expense I remain quick, calculating and modest on the 'top end' speeds. It's a FN mine field out there..... I must admit though that some of my local thrills remain at the bridge tolls where some clown comes flying through, with a bridge pass, as I drop my coin into the cup, quickly, just to show 'im what's what! whooooosh. Now, what's that song Possum sang :ha -Bob

But going from 60 to 0 in a 1/4 inch does. I.E. it's that sudden stop that kills!
I admit that I twist the throttle when it's "safe" to do so. Never ride over my head. When running thru central Kansas a couple of weeks ago, I saw triple digits a couple of times. I never felt uncomfortable. In cases when I do ride above the legal limit, my biggest concern is Johnny Law.
Have seen 125 on the speedo, but wasn't wanting to go that fast. Must keep in mind that you're covering 180 feet per second at that speed. That's more than 2 football fields every 2 seconds. Or from 1st to 2nd base in half a second. Those boys above are doing a football field about every 1 second. There is no forgiveness at these speeds. Be forwarned and remember you're not Superman and it's going to take 1 second to process any emergency situations that pop up out of no where.
I find it much more thrilling to ride through the 25 mph twisties at 35. Especially when there are no blind curves and traffic density is near 0. Those roads are out there. Go find them and practice, practice, practice.

Amen to that. Personally, I have no urge to see how fast my motorcycle will go. On my '77 RS, I've probably been up to around 95-100. The fastest I've ever gone was on a '74 Kawasaki 500, 2 stroke triple. I was at 110-115. But I got it to there in just over 1/4 mile. Yeah, I had a crappy launch. I was also 15 at the time.

My '94 R1100RS, which I keep in Germany, will indicate about 135mph. There's no drama involved at that speed, at least when riding on the autobahn. One does still have to keep an eye on the mirror for the Porsche/Benz/Bimmer that will come up on you in a hurry. There's always someone faster.
BTW, the bike gets terrible gas mileage at those kind of speeds! You can almost watch the bars on the gas gauge wink out.

Well I have received a lot of interesting reply's. By reading these reply's I must admit that I have a very mature audience out there.
And I will agree with the status quo that SAFETY !!!!!!
should be everyone's NUMBER ONE PRIORITY !
Just to set the record straight because no one out there knows me, I don't plan on being superman on my new BMW.
That speed I hit was done in a safe environment where there where no people, vehicles, traffic or obsticles. Just wide open fields. Visibility was 100 percent with no lane or driveways or cross roads.
Again, I am 45 years of age with children that need me so I don't plan on becoming a statistic and endangering public lives in the process.
I plan to enjoy my riding for many years to come.
Thankyou all for your reply and genuine comments

What gets me warm with speed
Going from 35 to 95 when passing some old buzzard who has been doing 35 in a 55 for the last 2 miles of non-passable two lane...THEN going right down to 60 where I belong..
Entering a busy freeway like I-80, taking the bike in essence from 0 to 105 to beat the solid block of semi traffic THEN right back to 80 MPH where I belong...
Last week doing 9 mountain passes in Colorado, acending and decending them in excess of the posted speed limit by 15-20 mph. Top EXCITING speed? 35 in a 15 or 20 in a 10mph...the excitement? the curves..Twisties leaning over as far as I can lean, making the perfect sloumn turn, then whipping it back the other way over and over and over...that's exciting to me!
It's not how fast....that's an incomplete sentence that should be saved for the bonniville salt flats when you grow up to be a speed racer; in real life the sentence should read "how fast I can go, considering the conditions, considering the risk, and considering the need" in that order
bkla bla bla...nothing said here that you all don't know already....

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know this is totally unsafe ans irresponsible, but you asked...
A couple years ago, I was on a 500 mile trip on the slab from Indiana to my mom's house in PA; about an 8-hour trip or so. I was a good 6 hours into it and bored going into Akron on I76, doing about 65 or 70 and caught up to a UJM Sportbike, then passed him as he was stuck in the right lane. He pulled out and got in behind me. I moved right and he went by. Boredom took over and I decided to liven things up.
Ended up going through Akron in light traffic. I know I hit 110 on my '85 K100 and think I went faster than that and had throttle left. The last time I passed the UJM, he looked over at me on my packed up naked K in amazement that I could possibly out ride him.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I am bad. Blame it on the K; she don't like following other bikes. Seems to me that was the same trip on the way back to Indiana that I passed a herd of Harley's that tried to keep up with me into and through Indianapolis on I70.
Sorry; I know better...:dunno

Well it's time to confess my one "speed sin" I do even though I know it's wrong
Now I didn't say the speed sport of dusting HD sporties PACKS of HD's are even better...
Pull up beside them in a pass, hold even for the count of three (sort of like jigging for Walleye) then set the bait so your out there 50 yards or so...invaribly one or two or the whole floatllia will come up behind you, and when they make their move to pass, let them get just past even but act like your wide open and your getting your ass whupped...Not too far as to be dangerous (sin on me!)
Then click into 6th, and pull away untill they are just little black specks way behind you on the freeway...
It would most likely work on Jap bikes too, although I never see those little buzzers out on the long rides....

Decided to do something similar a couple of weeks ago. Was having fun in the twisties and came upon a HD. He actually had that bike rocking from side to side, not something I'm used to seeing.....especially going 10-15 over the limit thru the corners.
I chased him for a couple of miles to the straightaway, where I made my move. He wound up and so did I. At around 90 I turned to him and politely waved, and then politely left him behind.....by a whole lot.
When he caught up to me at the stop sign(I waited) I smirked, politely wished him a good ride to which he smiled, nodded, and went on his way.
Being polite seems to work well when you're not being humble. :thumb

Listen, this only happened once and your
Your taking it out of context...The HD was passed, me doing 55 him doing 45 in a 55 speed zone.
50 yards out at 60, HD decides to roar around me, with his intent obvious, you could read his expression..
So my intent was obvious back at em..and he hung with till 90 where his HD started getting the wobblies.
I don't go around doing this to the normal cage OR bike! Whatta ya think I am?

Fastest indicated on the speedo, on the street, 165 indicated on my ZX-11 in Nevada, straight road, no traffic, ATGATT. Although at that speed a get off will still probably break your neck. On the race track (flat track, mile) probably 140 in the straightaways, 90-100 in the turns. Twisties are still the best, a 15 mile per hour curve between Silverton and Ouray no side rail, straight drop off, taken at 35 will greatly increase your pucker factor!

212 km/hr indicated on a 750 GSX R. This was on the south part of the Kananaskis Trail, where there's hardly anyone, except elk and griz. I've had my RS up to 200, while playing with a new C6, which slowly pulled away from me...
Don't do this too often, and only in quiet areas.

Same here, however, my GPS has top speed memory, and I'll take the 5th as well. I will say the RT felt unblelievably controlled fo the recorded speed. I was actually shocked to see the speed attained when I stumble across that data point while playing with my new, at the tme, Zumo. I never thought of the RT as that capable from a top speed standpoint.
