As a result of the death of Dan Christ, who as you know was killed by a drunk on his way home from the BMWMOA International Rally in West Bend, Wisconsin on July 15th, a number of us are starting an organization whose goal is to assist motorcyclists and/or the families of motorcyclists that have been seriously injured or killed in an accident they did not cause with a particular focus on motorcyclists hit by drunk drivers or hit and run type accidents. The name of the organization is Fallen-Rider. We have already registered the websites (.net, .com & .org) though at this time there is nothing to see if you navigate over to them. We have a basic idea of some of the services that we THINK may benefit the riders or their families but we would like to get a better feel for the short and long term needs of the rider and/or their families. You thoughts and suggestions on this subject would be appreciated. If you are uncomfortable posting your thoughts or suggestions for whatever reason, please e-mail them to kristincabranes@gmail.com.

Also, if anyone has any talent as a graphic artist and would like to contribute to the organization on a pro bono basis, we are looking to create a logo to be used on the website and potentially on t-shirts and patches down the line. If interested PM or reply to kristincabranes@gmail.com.

Thank you,
Kristin Cabranes

This sounds like a great idea, Kristin! Are you registering as a non-profit/charity/whatever? Are you looking to direct people to other places that can help them, or are you planning to provide assistance directly?

For example; you could provide phone numbers of lawyers in a persons jurisdiction, counselors, people to help with funeral, etc. On the other hand, you could actually have a "case worker" so to speak, to help take care of issues and be a point of contact to make sure everything gets taken care of. The latter would require a staff and a good amount of money... but it would be pretty cool.

Josh,
We are in the process of setting up a non profit 501(c)(3) as we speak.

Our short term goal is to provide the family with volunteers to help with everything from lawyers to walk assist them with the legal process, grief counselors, possibly financial planners if the rider was the bread winner of the family and the spouse is not money savvy or if the rider has becomes wheel chair bond a group to help build a ramp to his/her front door.

As I said in the first post, we THINK have the basic idea of what is needed but any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
