I have a former coworker/friend and her fiance who are interested in getting into motorcycling. He grew up doing it in the dirt. Don't think he has ridden much in years. She has never been on a bike. She plans on being a passenger only I believe.

They are looking for a toy....just for out and abouts. Weekend Jaunts and the like. By no means going on long trips. At least not at this time.

He is about 5'11 and 160 she is petite at 98lbs.

What are your thoughts on good starter bike recommendations. They are looking to spend about 5k.

I told them to both go take the MSF BRC. They agreed that is a good idea. They are also smart enough to know that they want proper riding gear.

What say you fine people?

TIA

Brian

You could find a nice F650GS in that price range. Very manageable for the novice and he might appreciate the offroad abilities.

Yeah. Normally, I'd suggest something like an EX500.

One of the new Triumph Bonnevilles might be good, too.

Search Craig's List in your area and good ideas and good prices will jump out. I have seen some good offerings at very low prices.

Here are a couple in the Albany area.

BMW R-90-6 - $2900 (http://albany.craigslist.org/mcy/388762275.html)

2002 Suzuki Intruder 1500 Beautiful Bike! - $5500 (http://albany.craigslist.org/mcy/388748639.html)

And the best deal of all:

1989 Honda Pacific Coast 800 - $3200 (http://albany.craigslist.org/mcy/387244311.html)

There are a lot of good deals out there.

Being the resident motorcycle nut at work and among my non-rider friends, I always get asked this same question.
The Kawa Versys which is finally being release in the USA, and the Suzi SV650 ARE the two bikes I always recommend.
Why?..light, enough power but not two much, takes a long time to out grow them if you EVER do, good brakes, comfy. Yes, I know they are not BMW's, but once they ride we can assimilate them into the collective later.
