Just got back from a 3 day, 2000 mile round trip to the Dragon at Deal's Gap N.C. on my R1200GS and the inside of thighs and butt are chaffed red (last time that happened was after I completed a marathon). I don't usually do that kind of mileage in those timelines and am wondering what tricks the hard core "iron butts" use. I am running a stock seat and know that gel would help. This may sound like a dumb rookie question but I wear cotton boxers and am wondering if synthetic underwear like Underarmor would also help prevent future occurrences. Any suggestions?

I find the stock seat on my R80/7 pretty good, and I use an "Airhawk" for longer trips; so I haven't had your specific problem. That being said, is it truly just chafing from rubbing against the seat? In that case, wash it with some mild soap, pat it dry, and then put some aloe on the area. Ont he other hand, if it's some sort of fungal thing, you want to wash with mild soap, pay it dry, and spread something like Lotramin Ultra or something similar for "jock itch". I'm not sure how you would tell the difference, though... but I think the chafing would just hurt on contact and movement, while the rash would itch and burn all by itself.
Good luck, that doesn't sound fun!

+1 for Lotrimin and microfiber underwear rules.

Cotton is not your friend! Microfiber rules!

Add a sheepskin to the seat for air flow between you and it. It really works better than you would think and I used to spend 8 and 10 hour days on a scooter in the summer in Tucson.

If you're still sore, consider using some Zincofax. It's a diaper rash cream that we used when the kids were babies. We've found it works really well to relieve the discomfort of chafing.

Thx for the tips - Aloe worked great. I will definetly follow the advice that "cotton is rotten" and buy some microfiber underwear and look into the sheepskin cover.

After a three day ride in the mountians and a thousand miles, bead seat pad, micro next to the body and a pair of riding pants that have some nylon and allow you butt to slide around a bit kept me cool, totally out of pain while in the saddle and no problem after.
The beads worked, hands down without a decent rival work GREAT! I know some people stand by Sheep skin working, but knowing me, I would trash it out with oily hands or a spilling a coke a week after putting it on the bike; I can't be trusted.
Beads for the slobs in the crowd, I guess.

A tip for our Canadian members: Mountain Equipment Co - Op now has the micro fibre briefs for $12.

Red,
Try the artificial sheep skins or wool. It works fairly well and can be washed. It also smells better when it gets wet!

In really hot & humid conditions I find the beads to be much better than the sheepskin. I can really feel the air coming through the beads (because I wear a mesh suit...haven't tried riding nekkid yet).

I go with Under Armour and have been very happy with it. You sound like a runner, I am a waddler, I have found that the microfiber wicking clothes work well for the motorcycle as well. Just like when running, make sure you check where the seams are.

When I was at the Rally this year I went to a vendor that was selling microfiber underwear for Long Distance riders. He said the Ironbutt riders were swearing by this stuff. It's a little pricey, but it is worth its weight in gold. It's called LD Comfort. Also got an Airhawk from Bob's BMW. Road a SS !K back to Dallas with no issue at all. :thumb

Sure fire remedy for the rash is Boudreaux's Butt Creme, sold in South Texas at HEB food stores and at the local WalMart. May sound like a joke, but the stuff is awesome!
I also vote for the UnderArmor for prevention. :wave

Ditto on the beads.
I've tried sheepskin and gel seats which are comfortable to sit on, but they just exacerbate heat and moisture issues. Only beads get airflow down there and keep my butt cool, dry and comfortable.

Sheepskin was good till I bought the beads at the rally and rode 2200km home.better air circulation and during a downpour water drained off quickly .You can also massage derriere by moving back & forth across the seat....
