While doing some 'pre-planning' for the 2008 Rally, I took note of the distance from my hometown of Sheboygan, WI to Gillette, WY - 979 miles.

Hmmm - just 21 miles short of that magic 1,000.

Do any of you long-distance riders know how I go about getting a 1,000+ mile route 'approved' by the Iron Butt Riders?

Afterall, the 979 miles is all superslabbing, so it's merely a one-day commute of about 14+ hours of riding. Seems to me I could nap a few hours and then knock off the other 20 - 30 miles, no problemo, all well within the requisite 24 hours.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The IBA SaddleSore web site (http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocId=1) has the rules and information you are looking for.

There is no 'approval' necessary and you might not hear back if you submit such info - they're pretty busy people and operate with volunteer help. You just do it and document it, no problemo, following the rules posted as M1ka pointed out.

For one of my rides, I was real close like that too - 58 miles short, so I passed my destination by 30 miles, stopped for gas, turned around and went back, stopped for gas (the receipts are your proof) and submitted the whole bundle. Now, for 21 miles, you might just want to go 21 miles further, stop, get gas, get signatures - ride is done, go back 21 miles to your destination. NOTE: The IBA does NOT accept your odometer reading! They go by Streets & Trips (or similar software) to determine the *actual* mileage you rode. BMW's are notorious for incorrect speedos and odos. Part of your submission is a map with your route highlighted and each stop (gas, rest, food, etc) marked.

Thanks for the advice. I printed the instructions - all 10 pages!

By this time next year, hopefully will have accomplished this and submitted all necessary documentation for consideration.

Again - Thanks!

I have always thought that participation in a IBA rally would be fun but there is too much to worry about. :dunno

Personally, I would feel kind of silly having others verifie my experience.

I agree that the paperwork aspect is a bit daunting - but then again, having a law enforcement background, mountains of forms to accomplish something simple is nothing new to me.

Hey....you are military, correct?! Forms should be nothing new to you either, my friend.

I will take quiet pleasure in simply accomplishing such a goal. If my documentation is acceptable, then I'll also 'hang out my shingle' (license plate frame) to commemorate the ride.
