After 79,000 miles it is time for me to replace the heated hand grips on my GS1150. Of course my dealer will do it for nearly $300. They say the cost of the grips are $200 and labor. Do I need to replace the heating element or can I get by with just new grips and what brand and size. I have never done it on BMW's just on my dirt bikes. Any help from experienced replacement would be much appreciated.

Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight.

are you just wanting to replace the rubber? you mention the heating elements is why I ask.
if it is just the rubber, I went to dealer and bought the throttle side (larger hole) grips as they sold them seperately, Carefully with needlenosed pliers, lifted rubber away from flared end and cut with a razor blade. I held the rubber away from any possible damage to foil wrap below. sprayed the new ones with 409 and pushed them on.the 409 evaporated in a day or so and are tight as new now
have done 3 R's with no issue
Now, if the grips are not heating anymore, the parts are $$$ as quoted to you but can be replaced and plugged into harness under gastank near headset

My heating coils still do a fine job, if not too good now that the grips are worn down. I can never us high, yes even in Colorado. I heard another person say that hair spray works under the grip and above the heating element.

used to use hairspray on the Hondas and Zukis to glue in place...now only Gel available in house...doesn't quite do it:laugh
I bought the grips for around $6 each seems like...some guys say their dealer won't bust a set apart (large hole/small hole) and had to buy two sets...I had no problem however
