The right side boss on the transmission case that mounts to the frame has broken off. Anybody else have a similar issue? The bike is a 1997 R1100rs with 24,000 miles. I believe welding will be a challenge, if even possible. So a used tranny is probably in order. Any other thoughts?

Is that the one the pass. footpeg mounts to?Thats a weakness on GS`s. Touratech has a strengtheng boss for it. I think if your break doesn`t affect the internals, a good welder could fix it.I used to live near a guy who worked for Alcoa as a welder, the stuff he did was Magic!

My '99 R1100R broke the tranny case at that mounting point at 5,500 miles within a year of purchase, and the transmission was replaced under warranty. My investigation back then revealed at least three other Roadsters suffering the same fate in the Pennsylvania/New Jersey area.

The R1150R did away with that subframe mount design.

You should be able to get a used transmission now. Check the online fleamarkets, www.beemerboneyard.com and www.re-psycle.com for starters.

Thanks for the tips. Not too many tranny's around. I'd like to try to fix mine since it is low miles and I've owned it since new. The Touratech brackets look like they may work, I will investigate.
Thanks for the info.

I have some Oilhead tranny cases if you want to buy one. PM me.

At the rally I was fortunate enough to attend the oilhead tech seminar, Paul Glaves mentioned the tourtech bracket. I have an R1100RS with only 14k and am wondering if it is a worthwhile investment for pavement use only (i.e. how likely is a case failure to occur on non-abusive non-GS type application)?

Any ideas?

In my case, before I discovered the broken tranny case, I rode the R1100R on gravel roads in the Adirondacks and Finger Lakes with the system cases plus gear strapped on the back seat, and I weighed about 200 lbs then. Still, I think the bike should have been able to withstand that, since I wasn't abusive.

It is a proven weak point. If you always ride solo, you're not too heavy, and carry no gear or cases, then you reduce the risk. But ask mjefferies how much he wishes he had the bracket installed before his transmission case broke.

Take the risk level you feel comfortable with.

Camshaft:

If I had an early oiler, I would have the bracket installed; there are enough rough pavement surfaces around to give any vehicle a rough jolt. I hit a pothole at speed a few years ago, and ended up spending a lot of money to have two snowflakes straightened and a set of steering head bearings replaced.

Mjeffries:

There is a good thread on this in the Bikersoracle RS site. You may be able to find it by doing a forum search in there. I will have a look for you. Here it is, and I will try to put the link in here:http://www.bikersoracle.com/rs/forum/showthread.php?t=1945&highlight=transmission

But I would just get a replacement case from Anton.
