Sometimes when I hit the starter button on my 2004 1150RT with 12K miles I will a hear like a 'clank' as it starts up. This happens even though the engine is hot and has only sat for a few minutes. Almost like a timing chain. It happens only once in a while.
Anyone have the same experience on their 1150RT?
Is this normal?

It sounds like the infamous left side cam chain tensioner. There is a great write-up here http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69360 on how to fix it.
It may be no big deal, but I know of more than one bike that has suffered a broken cam chain guide rail. Related to the chain slap? Who knows?

Nice link.
Thanks.

Not sure if it's a clank, but mine kind of screeched. Although it was worse when cold. I cleaned and lubed mine and all is good.....http://www.bmwst.com/faq/docs/starter.pdf
In general, the engine is much harder to turn over when hot. There can easily be more mechanical sound when starting a bike that has only been sitting 10 minutes. My HD almost stalls when hot, but spins freely when cold.....
