On the last 30 miles of a 4000 mile ride my shift indicator started to fritz, first it would not show 5th then slowly quiting in every gear showing 0 with the neutral light and finally rapidly shuffling through the numbers. is there a switch in or on the transmission? any ideas?

Yes.. There is a switch (called a trans-neutral switch in parts lingo.) it resides behind the swingarm on the back side of the trans. Mine fritzed out after 16 years of heat and exposure and was not that difficult to change. Just drop the rear wheel and tire and remove the final drive and driveshaft (good time to inspect and lube the splines.) then remove the swingarm and you'll see a small round switch with two bolts holding it on.
