I ride an old airhead, and a friend of mine asked me to look at a K-bike for him since he knows nothing about BMW's,
I know airheads, very little about K-bikes
interested in pointers, things to look for, problems for

87 k100LT with 84k miles
I have looked at it, have not ridden or talked to the owner, parked out front , nobody home
has a front fork seal leaking, no engine oil leaks that I could see
bike has been down one time, ,minor scratches and nicks, but no cracks in fairing and a dent in the tank, may not be related
plates about to expire
tires good for this dry season only, but I would replace sooner
no tears in seat, but I dont like the king and queen seats
saddle bags and trunk have no damage
original paint
dirty,

$2200

thanks

I would want to know the condition of the clutch splines and the final drive splines.

mentioned leaking fork seals..recommend checking rear suspension for wear/mileage. older K's notorious for low speed wobbles, due in part to suspension settings/ issues.
-
also ask about any starter repairs/overhauls and/or mysterious electrical gremlins w/the lights and instrument panels. (these 2 go hand in hand with the K!)
-
price sounds solid, like the airheads, not much can go wrong w/engine...I recommend checking around the forum and @ www.ibmwr.org great k-bike resources!

Early k bikes were known to have bad instrument clusters chances are odometer cluster has been replaced, mileage may not be all inclusive. dealers were supposed to put stickers under the seat if they replaced clusters.
