Is it necessary to remove the brake caliper to remove the rear wheel?

More than likely you will have to remove the caliper. :nod

I've been able to get the wheel off of my oiler RS, which is probably similar to your rear fender, without removing the caliper, but you have to wrestle with it a bit. Deflate the tire first, and you can also put the centrestand on a 1" piece of plywood for more clearance. Be careful with your $800 titanium exhaust can!
I would suggest removal of the caliper first however. It's easy, and the tool kit wrench works fine if you don't have Torx bits. Just have a piece of wire ready to hang the caliper from. When you put the caliper back on, the brake pad backing plate (at least I think that's what it is) will pivot out, but you just pivot it back in, and separate the pads with a wedge of some sort so there is enough of a gap to slide over the caliper. If I can do it, you can do it.
Stay away from the brake pedal while the caliper is off.

This is a very easy job and removing the caliper makes it a cakewalk.
I use 2 paint stirrers to sandwhich between the brake pads to keep them from compressing and hang the caliper with a short bungee cord.
Go ahead and give it a try! As was said earlier...if I can do it, you can do it.
Good luck.
