I have not been a member here long but have found tons of very useful info on this site and really appreciate everyones help and love your ride reports. I just sold my Harley and bought an 05 1200gs and love it. I rode more on my BMW the first 4 days then I had ridden my Harley the entire previous year.:D My wife and I are taking our first bike trip on July 20. We have not really planned a route yet. We are leaving Ky on Friday and plan to be on Ocracoke on Monday and stay a couple days, then work our way down to Savannah for a couple days and then back home to Ky. We have planned 10 days for the trip, but may take a couple more once on the road. Any suggestions on a route or POI not to miss. I'll try to figure out how to post pic's once we're back.

I would stay as far away from DC and it's traffic as possible,
make time for the beaches on the banks, Hatteras island and lighthouse are great,
Nags head is a joke but south of there the coast highway opens up and should be a great ride, never been there on the bike but would love to do it sometime.
HTH, have a great trip...

Savannah is a great town. Make sure you take in River Street and all it has to offer. Cobblestones by the river so you might consider parking and walking on river street.
I haven't been in GA for almost ten years but I have fond memories of Savannah. Nothing specific. Just a great town.

The highway down Hatteras Island is long and slow, but accept it for what it is and you'll have a good time. If you are the ATTGATT type, you better have mesh. Otherwise, let the winds blow.
Visit the old lifesaving station at Rodanthe when they have a speaker or evening fire; blink and you'll miss it. At Avon and Buxton, ride around the old streets off the main highway to get the flavor of what the towns were before the developers came. Canada Hole for watching the windsurfers. Hatteras lighthouse is cool - lots of steps, though. Ocracoke has a wonderful beach that is largely empty away from the town. The town is cute and touristy and can get crowded with pedestrians. Walk the back streets.

Thanks for the replies. We will check those places out for sure. Thanks for the heads up on the cobblestone steets. We are thinking of taking US 60 from West Virginia to Williamsburg VA. Has anyone been on that route? Either that or try to figure a route that will take us along the Blueridge Mountain Parkway.

We are thinking of taking US 60 from West Virginia to Williamsburg VA.US 60 from Richmond to Williamsburg will be a real traffic drag. From Richmond, take VA 5. There are a lot of historical markers along VA 5, including many colonial-era plantations. And it has curves in it.
