Gearbox Oil Change

Bike 1999 K1200 LT.
In describing how to change the oil in the gearbox, the manual mentions removing the exhaust system. Is this totally necessary???

I can see the large drain plug, just looking under the bike.What's the easiest way to access the filler plug for the gearbox?

The manual says to remove the right foot rest, and exhaust bracket on the center stand bracket............

You need to remove the right hand footrest, and the wire exhaust hanger (I think this shares hardware with the skid plate) at a mininum. Then you need a 14mm socket to remove the drain plug, and some type of shelf to guide the oil into a drain pan. Its a pain the first time.

There is no crush washer on the drain plug, so pay attention to reinstallation torque whhen you put the plug back in.
