When Changing the oil in the final drive, do I fill comlpletely to the top of the filler plug, or try and estimate the 0.24 US Quarts the manual recommends??

I worry about expansion if filled to the top.

Thanks

Fill to the top of the fill plug. There is plenty of expansion above that. That will corespond to the proper oil volume.

I would not fill to the top of the fill plug. I always fill to the bottom of the threads for the fill plug.

Better yet, I spent $1 on a measuring cup for my garage and put in the exact amount.

Thanks for the correction. Actually I fill to the bottom threads. Sometimes I'm not specific.

I have a plastic hypodermic type device with tubing on the end, I bought at a parts sore. Marketed to measure 2 stroke oil 16:1 or 32:1. Graduated in oz and cc. Market at 2 onces-60cc. You can get the EXACT volume. All the oil is injected, none left in the container as with a measuring cup. Works great on fork oil and other hard to fill places. No need for a funnel.

Ralph, be specific!:D

What parts store, what is the capacity? That sounds like just the ticket for a lot of things. I use a 1 qt measuring container myself but I've always been troubled by the "some oil left behind" bit. Especially with forks. If it'll hold 600CC, or 500 for that matter, it would making filling my forks much easier. I once used a 50cc syringe, but I seemed to always lose count about 350-400 CC :violin .

The syringe is called 'The MixMizer' by Hopkins Mfg, Emporia KS. I bought it at either Auto Zone or Wal Mart about a year ago. Capacity is 2 oz or 60cc. When I filled my K100 LT forks I had to keep count. I made a slash mark on paper everytime I refilled. I originally bought it to change the fork oil in a Kawasaki Vulcan 750. The fork oil is measured from the top of the forks on that bike. I used plastic tubing taped to coat hanger wire at the proper length and withdrew the oil. If you put in too much you can suck it back out. The graduations are 1/2 oz and 2cc.

Sorry on the multiple refills for anything over 60cc.
