Can anyone describe how I go about resetting the Motronic computer? I've been told I need to short the battery leads by removing the black/negative cable from the battery and touching it to the red/positive lead (which is still attached to the battery). However, this advice came with the admonition to NOT SHORT THE BATTERY! How do I avoid shorting the battery?

I can't seem to access the site (advider) where I recieved this advice so I can't access any clarifying advice the original advice giver may have offered.

Go to BMWsporttouring.com and do a search on motronic reset. There are several threads there that give specific instructions.

Basically, you just need to unplug the battery for about 30 seconds or so, then plug it back together. Some folks think you need to turn the key on, but not start the bike, and then run the throttle through from closed to open a couple times. Then shut the bike's key off and then turn it back on.

I'm not sure that part matters, actually. As an alternative, you can take the #5 fuse out.

Don't know how model specific this information is but...

On the R1150R:

1. Take off seat
2. Open fuse box
3. Pull #5 fuse
4. Wait some indeterminate amount of time...20 secs to 5 mins, longer is prolly better
5. Replace fuse
6. Close fuse box
7. Replace seat
8. Turn on ignition
9. Open throttle to full two times. Smoothly, in one motion.
10. Turn off ignition

I think on the S, it's on the right hand side fuse holder, but I'm not sure which one.
