R850R - 1997 (Rear drive)

Today my R850R dumped some rear gear lube through the vent located on top of rear housing. Not an excessive amount, but enough to be dirty things up. This is the first time this has ever happened. The bike just turned over 30K and had all services on schedule. I cleaned things up and all seems well now.

Any suggestions as to why this happened?

My R1150R started doing that last year (at 50K miles). I just pulled off the little cover and took out the small foam filter element and cleaned it good. It hasn't done it since.
