We have openings for the full day course Wednesday but you will have to sign up soon.

More info and how to apply can be found at:

ASMI will offer both their full day course and short course seminars at West Bend. The Accident Scene Management full day basic course is aimed directly at riders who may need to help a fallen rider, and will be offered on Wednesday, July 11, the day preceding the official start of the rally. The Foundation is underwriting part of the cost for course participants. The registration fee will be $15, plus $10 for course materials. This excellent training will be well worth the extra day spent at West Bend. Participants who have taken this course at other venues consistently praise the value of this training.

I am curious as to what issues are addressed. I ride with a police officer all the time and we often ride with a couple, one of which is a state trooper (ret.). We have been nearby accidents in our travels over the years and I have seen them spring into action. Very impressive. Helping the victims and directing traffic to lesson the danger on the scene. Even in civilian clothes, it's eye opening as to how the drivers and others respond to the help. I think it's the demeanor of trained responders which is the key here.

What time will this start on Wednesday, and is there a target end time?

I sure hope they teach folks that removing a downed rider's helmet is the CORRECT thing do to when it is done properly.

At the Isle of Man Incident Management Course (for TT Marshalls), we learned that if a downed rider is not breathing, wearing a helmet can be quite literally the last thing they need. There is no danger of spinal injuries if two people work together to remove the helmet properly.

I e-mailed them, and Vicki Roberts-Sanfelipo replied:
"The class is from 9-4:30 PM. We will start on time so I ask that you arrive 10-15 minutes early to register."

Disclaimer: I'm a (new) instructor for ASMI, and retired paramedic.

The course outline is available on the ASMI website (linked above), and it does take a full day. (~7 hours of class time, including lecture, discussion and practical sessions)

Proper full-face helmet removal *is* taught. (using the Amer Acad Ortho Surg 2-person technique)

Scene management, rescuer safety, rescue breathing, trauma-first aid for adults covers the major topics.

The full-day course is well worth it, especially at the roughly 50% discount. Many of the pictures and videos are based on cruisers (and the non-ATGATT "lifestyle"), since that's the majority of motorcycles in the US. (Yes, some of the comments and pictures made me LOL).

Sort ofa recap - update.

I recruited ASMI to do the full day course at West Bend after attending their 90 minute seminar at the AMA Women's Conference in Athens, Georgia last year.

The ASMI website (see 1st post) outlines what they do and who/what they teach. Their course is excellent - especially if it is your riding buddy, spouse, friend, etc. who just crashed. It is not too late to sign up. This is an excellent opportunity to learn some very valuable, potentially life saving skills and the life you save might well be your own. Scene safety is an important part of what they teach.

The Wednesday course starts at 9:00 a.m. Thewy will start right at nine so come a little early to socialize a bit and get settled.

The course is being taught on the Rally Site at the Fairgrounds. I don't know the building yet but I'll be on-site by Monday and will make sure the folks at the gate know where to direct attendees.
