After an easy ride today on my '95 R1100R, I noticed some smoke coming from the top of the cat convertor. A closer look showed the cat is stained below the trans drain plug, and I can see a small oil leak at the bottom of the case. Is there a vertical split in the case at this point? I put a wrench on the drain plug and tightened it just a bit, about a 1/16 of a turn. Any ideas?

When you say the "tranny drain plug" you mean the one on the right side of the bike in the little "tunnel"? Because that is the only drain plug for the tranny, and it has a crush washer for a seal, which should not develop a leak because they either leak or don't leak, but don't develop leaks.

Yes, exactly, but teh inside of the tunnel is clean and free of oil. The drip appears under the tunnel below the drain plug. Is there a vertical split in the case at this point?

Can you tell if the leak if Engine oil or Gear oil? It's possible that there is engine oil leaking and working its way back to the Tranny.
