View Full Version : Rustic Road Patch

As some of you may know the State of Wisconsin has a Rustic Roads Program. http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/scenic/rusticroads.htm These are roads that are generally out in the country and are generally very pleasant to ride. If you can document (with a photo) that you have riden 10 rustic roads the State will send you a patch. I'm willing to lead a ride, take the photos and handle the administrative end of getting you your patch. Who, if anyone, is interested in a Rustic Roads ride? If I get enough interest I'll be happy to do the work.

Count me in, two bikes.
Would "prefer" early am.
Did I see somewhere that it would be 300 miles to get 10?

Only if you are in counties with 1 or 2 roads. We will have to travel a little to get to areas where they are packed together. Probably between 150-200 miles total round trip (and I suspect it will be closer to 150 miles).
FYI, I'm looking at hitting Jefferson, Walworth and Racine Counties which should give us an easy 10 (and then some).
BTW, define the term early. Since I'm camping at the rally I'll be up early which to me is 6-7am but I doubt that there will be too many people that will want to head out that early and if we are doing this on a weekday, I'd like to start after the rush hour. If there is enough interest, we can start out early (8-9ish) and get breakfast on the way.
You guys decide, I already have my patch so this isn't about or for me, I'll accomodate the desires of the majority. BTW, I ride an LT and I dislike dirt and gravel roads. This will not be a GS ride... paved all the way.
FYI - FRIDAY, July 13th.
FYI - The State of Wisconsin will be onsite to validate your photos and to hand out the patches on FRIDAY. You can find them in Hospitality.
Remember, all you need to do is ride and shoot photos of your bike at at least 10 of these lovely roads for a patch. If you really want to go for it, get at least 25 and you will also receive a certificate signed by the Wisconsin Secretary of Transportation.
Stop by and say hello to Ron Thompson, a fellow BMW Rider and MOA member. He also manages our Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Program. His co-worker Barb Ofstie will also be there to help with this.

I’m like you, I’m ready to ride by 6am. But I’ll ride when the group does, just a preference. Besides if its only 150 miles, any time will work.
We’re not getting in until thur night so I was looking for some vendor time in the afternoons Friday, Saterday.

;We have been working the last few weekends collecting our rustic road photos. I would suggest that you bring a Wisconsin gazetteer along Some of the descriptions in the Rustic Road booklet are inacurrate. Pay close attention to the descriptions. We rode one in western wi that was described as a gravel road. Ended up being one lane wide with numerous water crossings. I wish I could have gotten a shot of a couple of RS's slogging through a stream. (Those GS folks don't have anything on us;) ) A number of signs have been stolen so it can be tough to find some of the roads. The Rustic Roads are marked in the gazetteers.

I'd actually like to do this ride on Saturday, since I'll be getting to the Rally late in the day Thursday, and like to do the vendor/seminar/volunteer stuff on Friday.
However, one monkey don't stop no show, so whatever the majority of folks want to do will be OK. If it doesn't work for me, I'll just do my own thing.

That's why I'm looking at doing Jefferson, Racine and Walworth Counties. I live in Racine County and have been on most of the ones I plan to photo. Since the DOT will be on site Friday we should get cracking early Friday. Lets figure 8am so we can be back at the rally site by early afternoon. Or we can do it Thursday and take our time... your (collective) call.

I don't like gravel or dirt... the LT isn't really an offroad bike so you can expect paved roads all the way.

Be happy to do it when I have actually figured the route out. :)
I haven't been on some of these roads for a year or two so I want to ride them to make sure they are in good shape (read safe) and to figure out an eficient route to get 10 as quickly as possible. Since my wife just bought a new to her '93 K1100LT and the weekend is supposed to be nice, I may run the roads on Sunday and post a tentative route by early next week.

I've mapped a route that is roughly 190 miles round trip (much of that is the ride back as I figure you all would prefer to avoid the interstate). There is some road construction in some of those areas that may affect our ability to get to some of the roads. I'll ride the route this weekend and if it is workable I'll put up the route Sunday night.

Count us in for 2 bikes, too. Unfortunatly, we'll be late arrivals. Our daughter is returing home from London on the 10th and we want to see her home safely before we head out. We're in the Toronto area, so have abit of a ride ahead of us. Maybe if the group is going to do the run earlier, we could get your route and so it on our own? Or as a group of 'self-guided' riders?

Here is the deal. I like to ride and I get bored easily. I figure that once I make the rounds of the vendors on Thursday, since I don't drink, there isn't much left for me to do but ride. Since there seems to be a group of you who want the immediate gratification of the patch on Friday, I'm willing to take a group out Friday morning. If there are enough of you that want to go on Saturday I'll lead another Saturday morning. The saturday group will have the advantage of stopping at Fred's in Burlington (if you'd like) for an extraordinary hamburger and then a waddle over to Adrian's for some really, really, good custard.
In any event I'll post a detailed route for those of you who would prefer to do it on your own.

Imagine my surprise when I found out this was about riding in Wisconsin. I thought it was about how they throw shovel sized piles of cold asphalt out of the back of a truck to repair the roads in Missouri, and then let the car, truck, bike tires mash it down into small humps in the road.

The pavillion right out in front of the fairgrounds is as good as any place to meet. Let's set the time at 9:00am both days. I did a small portion of the pre-ride today (had to cut it short because my wife's bike developed a fuel leak) and the first 2 spots are just off a busy road. I would prefer to limit the number of bikes to about a dozen max (on each trip) for safety reasons as there is little to no shoulder on these roads so we'll be stopped right at the edge of the road. Don't want a clump of bikes IN the middle of the road. Anyway, I would like to know who is coming on what day. So far I have:
Friday: Brian and Kristi Miller, Therealbatman
Saturday: Beemokat
???: Clowry (2), Flopp, Rodgtc, Dougc (2)
3 bikes Friday
1 bike Saturday
6 bikes undecided
Pick your days and if things change and you decide you don't want to come along let me know so we can add others. For those of you who would like to do this on your own I will post a route just as soon as I pre-ride it. The 8 that I didn't get to today are fairly close to home so weather permitting I'll do it during the week then I'll post the route for those of you that would like to give it a shot on your own.

The bulk of the roads are a ways from the rally site so I think we'll be ok in terms of competing with a horde of other bikes. I assume that all have ridden in a group before but I had intended on a SHORT review of the route and group riding techniques before we leave. Frankly the toughest part of these rides is keeping the group together so we'll be travelling at a reasonable speed, sorry if you thought we'd just scream down some of these country roads. Anyway, well talk about it before the ride.

I hope the advriders don't mind, but a rider has posted some tracks that might be helpful. The attached is the one for the South east. There are others here:

I had to rename the extension to txt so that I can post it here, so You'll need to save this back to your computer and rename the extension to GPX. You can then import it into your Mapping program.

Couple of things:
The good news... K75Mark may be willing to lead a second ride Friday or Saturday. He rode with my wife and I today and has expressed an interest. I'll keep you informed.
The bad news... not going to post the route just yet. Ran it from start to finish in what I can only describe as hellacious humidity. A couple of things became apparent during this run. 1) The Rustic Road 2 sign (which is where the picture needs to be taken) is in, IMO, a very dangerous spot, I'm going to have to either find another location or scratch RR2 and redo that portion of the Route. 2) I used a mapping program (Streets and Trips) to lay out the route. The route works but I have to see if there is a more efficient way to do this. Left West Bend at about 11:30am and finished up around 3:30pm add another hour getting back to West Bend and we have a 5 hour ride not including gas, bathroom and hydration stops. Call it 6 hours (that length of a ride is going to require a lunch stop - call it an hour - so 7 hours) So, this week, I'll run some parts of the route again to see if I can make them a little more efficient. If I can't, it looks like we leave at 8:30am from the front entrance of the Pavillion and you can expect to be back sometime between 3-4pm.
Sue, when are the DOT people LEAVING on Friday?
That's my report for today. K75Mark and I will be running some portions of the route again during the week and I'll keep you posted.
Jack
Ron Thompson and Brab Ofstie will on grounds and in Hospitality probably until 5 PM. However --- if they know you are coming back with a group riders, I have a hunch Ron will stick around. As a BMW MOA member, he was planning to come to the rally anyway.....

Sue,
Just to avoid any misunderstandings with the DOT people. I will have a digital camera with the images loaded in memory. I will not have the means to print a photo at the rally. Are they just going to look at the images in playback mode, will they download the images into their computers or will they require a print (which is not going to be possible on that day)? I'm sure the Friday riders want the instant gratification of the patch, the Saturday riders will obviously have to wait until I go through normal channels to get them the patch.

FYI on Friday Mark and I will split the group in half so that means that if we have 20 bikes we'll pull 2 off the first ride and add them to the second ride. The rides will leave 15 minutes to half hour appart so we don't bunch up at the signs. Will post the route later tonight.

Generally, they require a photograph digital or otherwise. I'm trying to figure out what they will require to give the patches to the Friday riders. I'll bring my laptop and burn a CD for them or e-mail the pics to them if they'll permit that. If they want an actual photo that will be a problem. I posted the question to Sue but she either hasn't seen it or doesn't yet have an answer. I'll stay on it an get back to you. BTW, if you're going to be here the weekend before the rally feel free to join me on the final pre-ride.

Can I assume that the individuals on the Rustic Road Ride will want to stop for lunch somewhere? Hint - I will. Please let me know how many want to get lunch and I'll call ahead and make reservations for what may be a large group. I figure both groups can meet at the end of the ride grab a bite then we can head back. Nothing too fancy.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Maybe I should proof read my directions BEFORE I put them up. You are correct. It is a right at Hall Road. The mistake has been corrected on the directions. Thanks for the correction, I'm sure you saved a bunch of people alot of frustration and saved me from a bunch of abuse.

Just got off the phone with Rob Thompson, the big kahuna, at the State's Rustic Roads Program. FYI, he is somewhat concerned about how he will validate the photos. He will have a laptop available and a memory card reader (I think he said SD) so he will be in a position to view and validate at least some of the photos submitted on Friday. He did indicate that while he will have patches to distribute at the Rally he will not have the letter/certificate that goes along with the patch so you will have to provide your name and address. Lastly, on this topic, there must be a bike (ideally the same bike) in each photograph. What this means for our group rides is that a bike will be designated to be the picture bike and the group will all pose behind it... we will need to have a sign up sheet with names and addresses for the certificate.
More information to follow.

Charcoal Grill is a small Wisconsin (really SE Wisconsin) chain with a varied menu (something for everyone) and the food is good. I'd really like to go to Fred's (known locally as The World's Best Hamburger) but they don't have the space or the parking for this big a group, Charcoal Grill does. Saturday's group being significantly smaller may get to experience Fred's.
If anyone who knows Western Racine County or Eastern Waukesha County has a different suggestion for a lunch stop I am all ears and will try to make it happen unless there is a compelling reason not to do so.

I figure not everyone who has signed up will show up at the meeting point on time and ready to go. If there is room you are welcome to come along but if all 24 of the bikes that have expressed an interest and have signed up show up they have first dibs. I'm not going to start a standby list now (too much of a pia) we'll deal with it on a first come first serve basis on the 13th.

We'll give him a break and hope he wises up some day...
Call him Harley man.

FYI, Koinz2-6. Koinz reserved the spots so on the day of the ride Koinz can ID the 5 of you.
My cell number assuming it is still charged by Friday, is 262-770-1030. In order to keep a charge I may have to turn it off so it may defeat the purpose of you calling. Your best bet is to text me a message. I'll check the phone periodically. I will be in attendance at the rally starting sometime Wednesday (late afternoon) through Sunday. My wife is one of the required licensed bartenders at the beer tent (ask for Kristin) she can point you in my general direction. You can also look for me where the Wisconsin Club is camping. If you see a good looking guy in the Wisconsin Club area... keep looking that's not me :doh
I'll try to find a picture of myself and post it here later tonight so you'll know me when you see me.

There is a small chance that we may be able to add a third Friday ride. Who would be interested (who is not already holding a spot on one of the rides) in a third Friday ride? Understand please that I am NOT registering people for a third ride. At this point a third ride is completely speculative. I'm just trying to get a feel for the level of interest.

I have been reminded that I should have you all sign a release and make sure that you have insurance. I'll provide the releases at the time of the ride, please provide me with some form of proof of insurance also at the time of the ride. If these two requirements cause you to back out of the ride please let me know so I can give your spots to others.
Sorry for bringing this up at this stage of the game but I just plain forgot.

[QUOTE=JCabranes;212739]As some of you may know the State of Wisconsin has a Rustic Roads Program. http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/scenic/rusticroads.htm These are roads that are generally out in the country and are generally very pleasant to ride.
"Up to it down to it, Be a fool if I didn't do it, Count me in."
I'll be checking the forum site for when & where to meet.
Or put it up on the B-brd at the rally site. DY

If anyone who has already expressed an interest doesn't show, you're in. If everyone shows, there are a limited number of people I can take and the ones that have expressed interest have first dibs.

FYI, left the Rally site at approximately 8:30am, did the route and we were sitting at Fred's (which is next the Charcoal Grill) by 11:45am. We did not stop to take photos at the signposts but did stop for a 15 minute bathroom/gas break. So the ride with bathroom break is approximately 3:15. I figure 5-10 minues per stop for the photographs so add another 50-100 minutes for the ride. So the ride should take (barring unforseen circumstances) 4 to 5 hours. So the first ride out should be done between 12:30-1:30 pm last ride out should be done by two. One hour or so for lunch and we hotfoot it back to the rally by 4:30 or so. It's going to be an all day deal... but the question is do you have anything better to do on the day of the ride?

I converted the track files linked from the advrider forum in an earlier post to routes and saved as a garmin gdb file. It's in a zip file so they could be uploaded it to the forum. It's a straight conversion using wingdb, so the waypoints aren't perfect, but it will certainly get you through the track.
So there's no confusion, this isn't JCabrane's route. I haven't had time to put JCabrane's turn-by-turn instructions into a route. Hope to have that done before hitting the road tomorrow.

I could care less if I get an "award" for motorcycling. I would however, love to go on one of these rides. Every time this list had a new ride posted it filled up before I knew any thing about it.
My question is if there is anything illegal about following the group?
Like I said, I'm not worried about being registered or anything, I just don't want the organizers to get into trouble for leading a motorcycle "gang" through small towns.

It's not a question about illegal, its really a safety question. There are a couple of these roads where the sign is located in a place where 13 parked bikes (btw, 13 bikes parked on the side of the road) is a tight fit. I've got no problem with anyone following at a distance, I just don't want a situation where we have too many bikes in close quarters and someone gets hit or drops his or her bike. Send me a PM and let's try to figure out a way to accomodate you.

Thanks to all who participated in the Rustic Road Ride and the Cubanitas Ride. It was a pleasure meeting you all. A special thanks to K75Mark (Mark), Hotspice (Tony), Jim Guthrie and Rick Hemenway without whose help it would have been difficult if not impossible to put on the ride.
Lastly, some of you (and you know who you are) disappeared before you got your patches. Please PM me if you still want it and I'll help with the paperwork.
I'll see you on the road (well not on the road but... you know what I mean ;) ).

Jack, I used the directions you provided. They were great! With a GPS and your easy-to-follow route, we were able to complete the ride on Thursday. On Friday I turned in the details and now have a nice patch to add to my collection.
Many thanks for adding some local roads worth riding to all that the MOA outlined. The Rustic Roads tour and others listed on this Forum helped make my rally.

Glad to be of service. Hope to be able to do the same for you next year (sans patch). Speaking of easy to follow route, on Saturday the DOT guy giving out the patches told me he had received a complaint that the directions were so vague that the couple that had tried to follow them wound up in Sturgeon Bay (some 150 miles in the opposite direction). :doh Can't see how that happened but I know it wasn't because of the directions. :nono
