Rustic Roads program goals
to identify and preserve in a natural and essentially undisturbed condition certain designated roads having unusual or outstanding natural beauty, by virtue of native vegetation along with natural or man-made features associated with the road
to provide a linear park-like system for vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian travel for quiet and leisurely enjoyment by local residents and the general public alike
to maintain and administer these roads to provide safe public travel, yet preserve the rustic and scenic qualities through use of appropriate maintenance and design standards, and encouragement of zoning for land use compatibility, utility regulations and billboard control

That thing could use a shaft drive! If I retrofitted an airhead it would eliminate any shifting problems. I could make the first row of batteries extra wide to keep the profile correct.

Blue Ridge Parkway Rally. Twice they passed in no passing zones. What, do they have special rights?
If I am not mistaken the entire Blue Ridge Parkway is double yellow and has a speed limit of 45 mph. This is an indirect response to your questions.
Let me ask one in return. Is there a point when a normally law abiding, non squid, motorcyclist is safer passing than staying behind a car even if in doing so they crosses double yellows?
I believe the answer is yes. My experience riding on the BRP is limited to the Ashville area and was on a borrowed bike. I was not using it to play squid but to enjoy the views like everyone else. It did not take me long to realize that cars behave erratically on the drive and being behind one could be dangerous. I balanced my safety v the price of a ticket and decided to pass. Again I was not trying to play squid but balance personal safety v strict adherence to the rules.
What is your reaction to this alternate safety take I wonder? The riders in the video are not here to explain, defend or chastise themselves.

They had a decent bakery and deli when I was there in November.

I've been on the BRP and I believe there's passing zones (I saw at least one in the video). Can't say I encountered any erratic car behavior. Unless the car is crawling along at 10 mph I see no reason to pass where it isn't legal. I'd rather have the car in front of me and lay back.
There is an old warning label that goes something like:
Experinces may vary use with caution.

Mika,
This is my video from the Parkway... glad you enjoyed it.
I simply wanted to address the double yellow... If anyone has ridden on or around the parkway, you know that there are very few passing zones actually on the parkway, and many of the twisty roads are occupied by those who are driving WELL under the speed limit, we are able to pass very safely as well as the fact that we were in constant communication with each other both B2B and hand signals. In at least one of the passing zones on the Parkway, I was not comfortable passing in it as I feel it was not a safe passing zone. Passing zones are designated as such due to the average vehicle and the time that it takes a car to pass... simply not at all a bike; not that this makes it legal, but there is a time when passing illegally is safer, or does make the ride better. For those who raise the issue, I would expect that you adhere to the speed limit 100% of the time or consider yourself a hypocrite. Yes, we know that the passing was not legal (neither is speeding by any amount), but it was safe; yes, we made the choice to break the law, the same choice many make to drive 5-10MPH over the limit, the key is always to ride safe.
I have a couple more videos in edit right now and will have them out shortly!
Have a safe one and ride safe!

Always wait at a red light even if it is through several cycles just because it is not detecting you? You never pass on the right, just wait for the morons on the interstate to move right? There are things that we do all the time which are illegal none-the-less, but they are also done safely and with reason.

You make some good points. I do the speed limit +5 around town and +5 to 10 on the highway. I do that to keep up with traffic flow. Actually, when I don't trigger a red light for a left turn (when I can) I make a right turn and turn around.
I pass on the right on a multilane road. Problem with a no passing zone is forward visibility, but I guess if you found it safe passing slow vehicles so be it.

My only point really is that we all weigh the risks as to how strictly we follow the law. As I had said in a post above that is not easily known, is that I was the third from last bike in a group of 15, we had coordinated hand signals to enhance safety, and, I was also in verbal communication with a bike well ahead (the yellow one seen in the video), so often, a video does not show all measure nor the whole picture. I felt very safe passing like that, and likewise, there were at least two passing zones that I did not feel safe to pass (could not really see enough) and defered to the safety side.
Keep Safe!
Mika,

I did enjoy the video and thank you for sharing your comments. Videos like pictures are worth a thousand words but often to get the full story you need a couple more words of explination.
I hope to view your future productions.
