View Full Version : Totally psyched about West Bend

Hi all - I am sitting in a hotel bar in Akron after a long day of work on the road and just wanted to say how psyched I am about having the National Rally in my home state of WI this year!
I am biased of course, but I think that everyone is going to have an especially good time in West Bend. Wisconsin has so much to offer riders.
And so does the MOA National Rally! In fact I have 6 friends who are non-BMW riders who will be attending just because of the unparalleled collection of vendors that we have at our rally. And 4 of them are from out of state! :thumb
I am working, but thinking about riding and can't wait to see everyone in West Bend!

The location, the roads, the speakers, the vendors, friends old and new and hopefully some New Glarus brews in the beer tent! It will be another great rally.
What really hooked me on the BMWMOA rallies are the seminars. It’s a great place to get almost any BMW or riding question answered. Also, as you mentioned, all the vendors that attend. There is always an overwhelming selection of moto stuff that I need, or think I need at the BMW rallies. Can’t wait to pack the bike and be there!

And if you are coming from the East there are the Michigan and Wisconsin shores of that big lake to explore. My plans put me in Wisconsin on the 7th just so I can have time to explore the roads before Camp Gears starts.

I too am stoked! This will be my first rally, and the anticipation grows daily. I can't help but think about it...often. Kinda reminds me of Christmas during my childhood, wait , this is still my childhood. I'm never gonna grow up, old maybe, but never up. See you there!:clap
Me, too!
Can't wait to see friends - old and new - and some I haven't met - yet!

I'm also really jazzed. This will be my first national, and on a new bike, to boot! My riding partner Brad and I are coming from South-Central California and are really, really looking forward to the ride and the rally.
I'm most excited to meet folks on this board, like Rebecca, Paul, and Voni--and countless others--for example. I'll be wearing my "SNC 1923" T-shirt, but I can only get one day out of that.
Will it be as hot and humid as I've been warned?
Can't wait. Looking forward to seeing you guys, all 9,000 of you.

This is my first National since Moodus in 94, and Oshkosh in 93. Long time to go without a National for me, and I get to drive in each day from Green Bay (just 100 miles away).
I'll be working the ERCs, so I also look forward to teaching and working with many of my fellow MOA members.

I am not a first timer, with lots of these done already. To those who are; have a great time and ride safe. I'm coming from California(Clovis) and will enjoy it all as usual. I always look forward to meeting new folks along the way and at the rallies and this is never boring. Airhead or K bike are my choices and its always a tough one to make. Last year the R100 went to Vermont, so I guess the KLT will come out again and play:). I'm such an "Airhead" at heart, however so I'm stressed! I'll get over it:) Randy13233:clap
I am so looking forward to putting faces and voices with many of you, and to renew and expand a few of the friendships I already have from the first visit to the Rally site and then New Glarus.
Ride safe all and see you at the rally.

Me too. One of my favorite things at all rallies is meeting people who I get to know through this forum and then get to meet in person! Just another reason that I am totally psyched about West Bend.
As far as hot and humid, we get about 1 week a year that it is really bad. Otherwise weather is pretty moderate.

I probably will camp, but I may ride home every day to bring a different bike, and to go for a ride. People are welcome to follow and go swimming in our pool if it is hot.
(Well, not all 10,000, all at once anyway)
People are backing out of our food vendor plan, what does everybody think about a good Coffee house?:)
Roy - we already have a coffee vendor. Sorry. :)

Ha! I think I have been there during that hot week at just about half the National rallies I've been to since Branson in 1975. That was hot with chiggers. I think the all time winner was the Loretta Lynn Ranch in 1981. I think I liked that rally one of the best, regardless of the humid heat.
There is something about a National BMW rally that makes me (Viki and I) even start out in the rain.
See y'all at the beer tent...at least in Wisconsin, beer is the state drink.

This, too, will be my first national rally. I have some friends riding up in the Wisconsin area now. I got a call from them yesterday lunch, after they had riden for 4 hours in rain and fog... but said they were having a blast. I wanted to make that ride, but got caught in toooo much work and family stuff. I do not want that to happen next month, so get it all taken care of NOW. I am really looking forward to meeting so many of you that I have heard from through this forum. Thanks for the route and Wisconsin information that has been posted... sounds like a Great state!...Coming from Tennessee, up the Big river, to the Big rally, round the Big lake, and back home. GREAT to hear that you will be at the rally Veg!! Is Gwenn coming up too?

Yeah, I have to agree that Loretta Lynn '81 was the hottest National Rally. No shade, few vendors, and all rocks. It is interesting that you count that one as one of the best--the general consesus that I have heard over the years is that the '81 National is considered possibly the worst rally. I had a wreck going there, nearly melted at the rally, and had heat sickness on the Chattanooga bypass! Wanna guess which National Rally is 17th of the 17 Nationals that I have attended? I got to talk to Chick Morse ('81 Rally Chair) on the '01 Rally Train on the way to Redmond,OR. He admitted that the rally "didn't go well" and recieved a fair amount of grief from some of the other past rally chairs that were on the train. Hey, putting on a National Rally is a major HARD JOB and I salute all of the past national rally chairs for their fine service to the BMW family!:thumb

I guess it was the people who were there...mostly. Maybe also the singalong in the creek. I went into the creek about once every hour or two. Had a Coors or two. A barbeque or two. Showered at 4AM, and danced to Rocky Top about eleventeen times. Had a great time. Got my white tennis shoes dirty. They never did clean up. Changed my life.

gay mule ish kite?

The ICK gets ya. My German tutor described it as trying to hack up a fish bone as the proper way to pronounce it.
Of course I am just guessing here...
I've always pronounced it:
Ge - mew - kle - Kite

I hope that you have a GREAT ride!! That's the only downside of this year's rally for me - it's only 32 miles from my house! :)
Also, I am adding reason #107 that I am totally psyched about West Bend: THE WEATHER is forecast to be gorgeous! Sunny and in the upper 70s which is ideal in my book for riding and camping.
I'm looking forward to meeting lots of forum folks at the rally..... :dance

I cannot believe I am feeling as stoked about this as I am. We haven't camped in more than 20 years and managed to grab a SherpaMayberry tent at the last minute so we're on site and looking forward to this. I've actually typed out our packing list detailing everything, just so we can look at it after and decide what worked and didn't - it's 3 pages long! I think it's been my way of keeping busy until we leave..

Indeed: we'll be leaving Cadillac, Mi way early tomorrow morning - travel through the Upper Peninsula - and land Wed. night in West Bend - with Sherpa Ted having our plantation already spread out for us!
I've finally replaced the tires, battery, clutch cable, oil pressure switch, oil/filter, and fluids. Funny how a Rally tends to get things done. I've been to a few of these and have never had anything but a great time. Looking forward to the sessions, rides, demos, vendors, people, localities, BEER, and general vibration of the whole thing -
Drive safe everyone and see ya all there!!:thumb :thumb :thumb :thumb :thumb

My bike is 95% packed. I'm heading home over lunch, getting the bike, and then riding it back to work. I should be rolling out of here around 4:00pm... showing up to the rally mid-day Wednesday so I can work my registration shift Thursday morning. It's going to be a HOT one today, and I may be riding into/through some storms, but the rest of the week looks nice! :thumb

does anybody know where we can get a decent pie? (This IS berry season yaknow)
Does anybody want to join me Saturday night finding a decent slice of pie between West Bend and the big pond?

Storms changed my plans. I was going to leave Toledo today, head North of Chicago, and camp for the night. The line of storms seemed unfriendly, and I didn't really feel like setting up my tent after everything is soaked. Sooo... lets try again in the morning. I get to the rally the same time, but now I'll have to do my rustic roads trip in reverse, and on another day. No big deal, for me. Instead, I took my folks out to dinner to thank them for watching my four legged daughter. The bonus: I got to have dinner at a local microbrewery. :drink :thumb

We stopped for the evening in Platteville,WI...decided that was enough for the day...fantastic riding today, yesterday crossing Arkansas was a tad wet. Left Hot Springs in the rain and stopped in MO on I-44 as it stopped...
Today all the way up 19 to 61 and now on 151...I think! I was swapping maps enough to fry my chip . One little flat on Chucks new rear tire slowed us in Iowa for a few minutes...but we were on the road after a short pit stop
ANYWAYS...see y'all tomorrow after a stop in Beaver Dam.
And BTW to the two Colorado bikes that passed us in Dubuque on the R1100R and the K bike:nyah :nyah :nyah ...did you forget to at least :wave You can be snobby to us Texans while in your homey state, but I thought we were in neutral territory...we are gonna find you two!!

I can't believe it. We leave in 11 hours. I'm starting to over think everything. Our daughter got back from the UK today and we've said our hello's and goodbye's. She might be awake when we leave. All that's left to do is drop the diabetic cat off at the vet for the week and we're off! I can't remember when I've been looking this forward to a trip/ride. I'm downloading the maps and routes to the GPS, most of the luggage is packed. Argh, I have to sleep still and I can't shut off the brain. What have I forgot??? Whatever it is, I'm sure there's a shop somewhere that I can get it.

We got lucky this year and the rally is pretty close to us. That makes more time for enjoying ourselves with all the activities.
Everyone has done such a good job advertising the rally and getting everyone excited about it. The last 3 ON's have been awesome, I think we have read them at least 10 times each.
We are leaving early Friday morning and should be on the camp grounds no later than noon. Yahooooooooo we are excited.
Thanks to everyone who put the hard work in for this years Rally. I just know it is going to be the best ever.

The wife and myself went for a ride today before turning my trusty RT over to my brother. It's running good. We saw about 15 Beemers in Eagle, Wisconsin at a corner Tap and Grill. What a great sight.
My brother is taking the RT for some riding today and going to pack up tonight for his first rally in about 20+ years. I am getting ready to pack up the beloved R50 and we shall be leaving for the Rally tomorrow morning. Even if I take the long way, I can only stretch the trip out to about an hour and a quarter unless I go in the opposite direction.

Our plans are set to pull outtahere Friday morning, and now thanks to the rally shots, the psychosis is setting in. The shrinks call it "LDCP" "Late Departure Caused Psychosis". It is treatable, requires the patient to blast forward at 5 miles over the speed limit, and head toward the smell of sausage, kraut, and the exhaust of thousands of BMW motorcycles. The posted pictures of absolutely stunning women ALREADY at the rally exacerbates the symtoms in most middle to over the hill male patients! Please send more!!!

You are not going to believe what you will see up here.
It is only Wednesday(rally not even officially open) , and as I was leaving the bike lot the place was "low key" jumping. Dozens of bikes heading up Hy 45.
MotorRad has their booth and trucks set up and the bikes they brought for demo will cause instant drooling.
Vendors are top notch. Bring lots of money. Bring some money for me,too.
I do not know what your plans are, but try to get to the rally earlier than you had planned on. Much stuff to do!

OK. Me being 6'2" and my brother being a head taller, he doesn't fit on my RT. He went for a test ride and his knees were hitting the fairing. He also hit the clip for the float bowl and lost my left side float bowl. Thoroughbred Cycles was there to save the day, we bought a used left side and gasket and went to my brothers to get my RT. He had also bent the float, so with some minor adjustments, I got the RT home.
I had my brother come over and we unconverted my /7 from the "S" handlebars (as I was in the middle of it) and put the old bars back on. It is a fit! We moved the pegs down and he actually made some "spats" that cover the bottom of his only pair of boots. Being cautious, I also tie wrapped the clips on the carbs. He just called me from home, said the /7 runs great and we are going to West Bend tomorrow! Yee hah!
