Riders for Health have worked for over 15 years on the problem of delivery systems for healthcare in Africa. We work with ministries of health, UN agencies and other NGOs. Our main resource centre is in the UK while our programme staff are all nationals of the countries in which we work.

We are self-funded with no government support. Our origins are in the sport of motorcycle racing and successful fundraising at motorcycling events and races enables us to support our pioneering field initiatives, ensuring that motorcycles continue to save lives in Africa.

Riders.org (http://www.riders.org/en/html/) newsletter

Dear friends, colleagues and supporters,

Thousands more people across Africa will benefit from access to reliable and predictable healthcare thanks to a donation of over £150,000 from Virgin Atlantic this month. The money will be used to buy 31 new motorcycles for use in Riders’ programmes across Africa. Joint-CEO of Riders for Health, Andrea Coleman, said: “What is unique about this donation is that Virgin recognises that maintenance is the key to uninterrupted healthcare delivery – so part of this money will be used to manage and maintain the motorcycles, meaning health workers will be able to carry on delivering healthcare to people in rural villages, day in, day out.”

Riders would also like to thank Federico Minoli, trustee of Riders and former CEO and president of Ducati Motor Holdings, who, after leaving Ducati has decided to sell all the racing memorabilia he collected throughout his very successful time with the famous red brand. All the money raised from the sale of these truly unique items will be donated to Riders. To read the full story click here, or, see a full list of all the items on sale by visiting the ebay Italy auction site. The auction closes on the 4th June, so anyone interested in bidding will need to hurry. We will have full details of how much the auction raises next month.

It is now only three weeks until Day of Champions and everyone is working full-throttle to make sure that this is the biggest and best Day of Champions yet. Thanks to unprecedented demand for tickets, this year Access All Area tickets sold out over six weeks before the event. Riders would like to thank everyone who bought tickets this year. If you missed out, you can still buy a ticket to join the ride-in from Coalville, and get access to the paddock and pit-lane, or you can buy an infield ticket and enjoy all the entertainment on the track and the infield throughout the day.

If you can’t make Day of Champions in the UK, but are planning on going to the USA GP at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, why not join the 100 lucky motorcycling fans who will have the chance to get access to the people and places that most spectators can only dream about? To find out more about buying a ticket for Riders for Health Day on Thursday 19 July, click here.

These are just four examples of how our supporters are helping us to reach millions of people in Africa. Without their help, Riders would not be able to carry out its lifesaving work, and we are extremely grateful to everyone that supports us

Thank you.

With very best wishes,

The Riders communications team

MINI Canada adds MINI Cooper Classic to 2007 MINI model lineup

Whitby. MINI Canada today announced that the MINI Cooper Classic will join the MINI model lineup this summer with a value-leading MSRP of $22,950.
The debut of the MINI Cooper Classic follows the introduction of the new-generation MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S in February, both arriving with pricing unchanged from their predecessor 2006 models. The MINI Cooper Classic, reborn for 2007, not only incorporates all of the new elements and improvements of the new-generation MINI family, but eclipses its predecessor with a lower starting price and an even more comprehensive list of specifications.

Upgraded standard equipment on the 2007 MINI Cooper Classic now includes:
* Automatic Stability Control + Traction
* Multifunction Steering Wheel
* Passenger Seat Height Adjustment
* Unique to the Classic – 15” 5-Star wheels with all season tires

Available options on the MINI Cooper Classic include a Premium Package, including Heated Front Seats and Front and Rear Fog Lights at $600 and the 6-Speed Automatic Transmission with Steptronic for $1,390.

The MINI Cooper Classic is available in four colors: Chili Red, Pepper White and two new choices – Mellow Yellow and Oxygen Blue which team up with Carbon Black Leatherette upholstery and Fine Silver trim.

Like both of its MINI Cooper and Cooper S stablemates, the 2007 MINI Cooper Classic brings a host of innovations and new features to its specification sheet, including:

* A new 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with fully variable valve timing technology developing a maximum output of 118 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 114 ft-lb. @ 4,250 rpm. Mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission, the new MINI Cooper Classic is capable of acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 9.1 seconds. It also sips fuel at a miserly 5.4 L/100 km (highway)/7.3 L/100 km (city), making it eligible for a $1000 rebate in the Federal Government’s ecoRebate program.
* New EPAS Electrical Power Assisted Steering provides speed-variable power assistance which maintains traditional go-kart-like MINI agility while optimizing steering effort at low speeds.
* Electronic ignition key fob with push-button starting.
* Ambient interior lighting that provides unique cabin illumination options - variable in five stages from warm orange to sporting blue.
* Auxiliary audio input.
* SIRIUS Satellite radio pre-wiring.

With its well-established reputation for go-kart like handling, tenacious braking, crisp acceleration, all-season capability and pure FUN, the MINI family has also been engineered for premium levels of passive safety. Like all other variants of the new MINI generation, the 2007 MINI Cooper Classic is equipped with an Advanced Head Protection System, six airbags with SMART deployment technology, collapsible tube crash technology, and three-point inertia-reel seat belts on all four seats.

In April of 2007, the new generation MINI achieved the highest possible 5-star rating for passive safety from the European (NCAP) New Car Assessment Program, confirming the MINI as one of the safest vehicles in its segment.

The MINI Cooper Classic reachs MINI showrooms starting in July.

MW Motorrad opens “Boxer Café” in China and plans long-term involvement in the Middle Kingdom.

http://m1ka.smugmug.com/photos/158466766-M.jpg

Munich. The time has come: BMW Motorrad is extending its involvement to China, continuing to develop sustainable future market and trade relations in the Far East. On May 11th 2007, the Munich-based company provided a further impulse on its involvement in the Chinese city of Chongqing. At the centre of the Chinese motorcycle industry, the Head of BMW Motorrad Dr. Herbert Diess opened the “Boxer Café” - after Peking the second sales centre for BMW motorcycles in China. The “Boxer Café” is not only a showroom and sales base but also a meeting point and an experience and communication centre for friends of the brand and all those interested in motorcycles.
The opening in Chongqing sets off a number of other activities in China, establishing BMW Motorrad and its brand culture over the years to come. BMW sees itself as a pioneer: big motorcycles are still a rarity in China and are to be projected as ambassadors of new group experiences and a new lifestyle. There are plans to offer travel programs and special motorcycle events for Chinese customers as well as for other potential customers from all over the world.

The Bavarian motorcycle manufacturer has been able to secure the collaboration of the Chinese conglomerate LONCIN.

LONCIN, which will initially operate the “Boxer Café”, will be the sales partner and from 2008 also importer for BMW motorcycles in China. Extensive knowledge of the market and a good sales network were the decisive reasons for choosing LONCIN as a partner. Sales staff has been trained in Germany in collaboration with the Munich sales subsidiary to ensure a high quality of customer support from the very beginning.

With a production volume of one million bikes per year the motorcycle division of LONCIN is one of the larger motorcycle manufacturers in China. The company headquarters is situated in the world’s largest conurbation for motorcycles; between five and six million motorcycles are produced every year in the Chongqing area. The most important supplier companies are located in the region and well-known Japanese motorcycle manufacturers are already engaged in joint ventures here.

As China is the world´s largest and ever growing volume market for motorcycles, the involvement in Chongqing is of significant strategic importance for BMW Motorrad and its establishment as a brand in the Chinese market. The market in China is gradually developing towards larger capacity motorcycles, thus offering growth opportunities for BMW Motorrad.

Penetration of the Chinese supplier networks is a second key element of BMW Motorrad’s China strategy. However, an imperative requirement is the quality capacity of the suppliers. Dr. Herbert Diess is aware that this early involvement will ensure that the company is able to exert influence and gain opportunities to shape future developments: “China and the Chinese suppliers are progressing extremely quickly. Within a short time, there will be a repeat of what happened 15 years ago in other parts of the world in the supplier industry, and BMW Motorrad wants to be part of this process from the very outset.”

To Diess, purchasing parts in the Asian region - including China - is a crucial means of compensating for the currency deficits of the euro as compared to the yen. Today’s currency-based cost advantage of the Japanese manufacturers amounts to around 60% - a level which cannot be made up for by conventional means or by increasing efficiency. The increase of Asia’s share in the value creation chain by means of parts sourcing will be indispensable for entry level motorcycles and in the price-sensitive medium category to ensure that BMW Motorrad is able to maintain competitive capacity and make use of the attractive market opportunities offered by these segments in the long term.

PHANTOM SILVER MARKS 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF SILVER GHOST

Rolls-Royce has produced a limited edition, named Phantom Silver, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Silver Ghost. The special model, of which only 25 will be made, pays homage to the one of the most famous automotive names of all time.

http://m1ka.smugmug.com/photos/158466539-M.jpg
First built in 1906, specifically to publicise the then new Rolls-Royce 40/50 h.p. six-cylinder model, the Silver Ghost established the Rolls-Royce reputation for reliability and engineering excellence. The name was coined in 1907 by Rolls-Royce Managing Director, Claude Johnson, by virtue of its silver coachwork and its ‘extraordinary stealthiness’. The original Silver Ghost, registered AX-201, competed in the 1907 Scottish Reliability Trial, for which it won the gold medal in its class for hill climbing speed and reliability. The Silver Ghost went on in that year to break the world record for a non-stop motor run, covering a London to Glasgow route 27 times, with mileage totaling 14,371 miles.

More than 6,000 “Silver Ghosts” were built between 1907 and 1925, and sold in every corner of the world. The majority are still in good running order.

In tribute to the specifications of the original, the Phantom Silver is finished in a new Bespoke paint, Metallic Ghost Silver. The 21-inch wheels have chrome centres and on top of the grille sits a hallmarked solid silver Spirit of Ecstasy. Inside, Rose Leaf or Crème Light leather is accompanied by seat piping and headrests embroidered with the Rolls-Royce interlinked RR badge. Straight grained Santos Palissander wood veneer is used throughout. The same veneer is also used on a specially designed presentation box that houses the key, two solid silver key fobs and a specially commissioned solid silver Conway Stewart fountain pen.
http://m1ka.smugmug.com/photos/158466551-M.jpg

Rolls-Royce Chairman and Chief Executive, Ian Robertson, said, “The Silver Ghost is such a significant model in the history of Rolls-Royce that we felt marking its 100th anniversary was entirely fitting. Its extraordinary reliability, refinement, comfort and virtually silent running were as important to Rolls-Royce in 1907 as they are today.”

BMW Sauber F1 Team - Canadian Grand Prix – Preview

Canadian Grand Prix.
8th - 10th June 2007
6th of 17 World Championship rounds

Preview.

Munich/Hinwil, 1st June 2007. The BMW Sauber F1 Team and its Formula One rivals will be embarking on the second of five back-to-back race weekends during the 2007 season when they line up on the grid at the picturesque Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal on 10th June. A week later, they will be limbering up for the next race on the calendar at the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the US.

The BMW Sauber F1 Team will arrive at the Canadian Grand Prix full of confidence. Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica are aiming to add to their points totals at the demanding high-speed track and to further strengthen the team's third place in the constructors' championship. The team has scored points in every race so far in what is only its second season on the grid.

Nick Heidfeld:
"Like most drivers, I really like travelling over to Montreal. The race circuit occupies an incredibly beautiful location on the island in the St Lawrence river, which makes for an unmistakable atmosphere. And the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve itself has a very special character. It is a high-speed track with long straights, but also some tight chicanes and a couple of slow corners. To start with, the asphalt always has very little grip. When the track starts to get really grippy and the car is working perfectly, though, you can run hard over the kerbs in the second chicane. This chicane also goes downhill, and you get seriously close to the wall on the exit.

"Away from the track itself, I also like the city of Montreal a lot. There is always a great atmosphere there and the people get really excited about the grand prix. I usually travel to Montreal a few days before the race and have time to do some shopping in the city. I also like to stop by at a few galleries in the old part of town. Patricia and I have several pictures at home which I bought there."

Robert Kubica:
"I am really looking forward to Montreal as it is one of my favourite tracks in the Formula One calendar. It means driving with lower downforce for the first time this season. Last year on the Friday I was quite good there. I am looking to repeat that performance and I think our car can perform very well there because of the downforce configuration. I like the track because it is a street circuit and has pretty low grip, improving during the weekend.

"It will be interesting to see how I can cope with the Bridgestone tyres compared to the Michelins of last year, and how I have to change my driving style. I will see how big an influence it was for me to change to the different tyres. Montreal was the track where my driving style of last year gave me an advantage. As I am not driving the same as in 2006 we have to see how it will be this year."

Mario Theissen, BMW Motorsport Director:
"The two races in North America represent not only the next challenge for us as a team in terms of collecting more World Championship points - they also carry a lot of weight for the BMW Group. The USA was the most important single market for the BMW Group in 2006, with sales of some 314,000 BMW and MINI cars. Canada is the Group's second largest market in America after the USA. BMW, therefore, has a large fan base in the country, and we also feel the strength of this popularity as a team.

"Last year, we crossed the Atlantic in fifth place in the standings. In 2007 we will be arriving in Canada as the third best team. In 2006 we were only able to take two points away from the pair of races in North America. This is something we are naturally looking to improve on, and we are aiming to collect as many points as possible on the back of our good result in Monaco in order to further strengthen our position in the championship.

"The atmosphere at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on the island in the St Lawrence river, with its paddock running along the side of the former Olympic rowing basin, is simply captivating. With the colourful hustle and bustle in the city and a race circuit on the waterfront there are certainly parallels in terms of atmosphere with the Monaco Grand Prix. However, the type of challenge presented by the Montreal track could hardly be more different. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve places totally different aerodynamic demands on the cars and pushes both the brakes in particular, and the engines, to the limit. In line with the F1 regulations, our cars will continue with the same engines as we used in Monaco. Sebastian Vettel will be with us in America in his capacity as test and reserve driver."

Willy Rampf, Technical Director:
"The combination of long straights and chicanes makes Montreal what we call a 'medium downforce' circuit, and we have developed a special aero package that takes this into account. The long straight leading up to the final chicane offers the drivers the best overtaking opportunity if top speed allows. Montreal is harder on the brakes than any other circuit on the F1 calendar, so maximum brake cooling and high-performance specifications for discs and pads are the order of the day.

"This is a circuit that punishes even the slightest error, as the crash barriers are largely extremely close to the track and there are not many run-off areas. We were very competitive in Canada last year, and I am extremely confident that we will be able to come away with good results again this year."

History and background:

With a population of 1.6 million, the eastern Canadian city of Montreal is the country's second-largest city and the capital of the 80-percent French-speaking province of Quebec. 3.7 million people live in the greater Montreal area. The city lies on the Île de Montreal at the confluence of the Ottawa and St Lawrence rivers. The 233-metre-high Mont Royal - located in the centre of the island - gave its name to the city, which was founded by French explorers in 1642 as Ville-Marie-de-Montreal. The Port de Montreal remains an important stop-off for ships on their way to the Great Lakes. The region's climate is dominated by extremely cold winters and short, sunny summers.

From 12.00 to 18.00 hrs on Saturday 9th June, BMW drivers will gather with a selection of exceptional cars for a concours in the park grounds of the downtown Bell Centre. The finest examples in various categories will be selected as part of the event. Needless to say, representatives of the media are also very welcome to attend.

The complex on Notre Dame island where the non-permanent race track is located was the site of the 1967 World Expo and hosted the 1976 Olympic Games. The Formula One paddock runs along the side of the former rowing basin.

2007 marks the 39th Canadian Grand Prix and the 29th held in Montreal. The first Canadian Grand Prix took place in 1967 in Mosport, which went on to host a further seven GPs. Mont-Tremblant was the venue for two GPs. Formula One moved to Montreal in 1978, where it has been held ever since on the circuit named after the winner of the inaugural race, Gilles Villeneuve.

Rustic Roads (http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/scenic/maps.htm)

Rustic Roads program goals
to identify and preserve in a natural and essentially undisturbed condition certain designated roads having unusual or outstanding natural beauty, by virtue of native vegetation along with natural or man-made features associated with the road

to provide a linear park-like system for vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian travel for quiet and leisurely enjoyment by local residents and the general public alike

to maintain and administer these roads to provide safe public travel, yet preserve the rustic and scenic qualities through use of appropriate maintenance and design standards, and encouragement of zoning for land use compatibility, utility regulations and billboard control

Thank you that was great information about the rally area.

The new Rolls Royce looks too boxy, I like the older ones with a boat tail better.

You’re welcome. Is there anything that should be added. I will continue to post this.

I have not been impressed with the Rolls Royce looks for a long time. For me Lincoln’s rip of the design for their Town Car has a much better flow to it. Either way it is an improvement over the previous models that reminded me of Ramblers.

If cars are an extension of our personalities perhaps the wealthy are using their cars to say they eschew the taste of the common man such as us.
