Stop #1 is dedicated to Mika!

Stop One on the map from the East is Holland Michigan.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Scenic%20Shots/windmill.jpg

Visit Windmill Island (http://www.michigan.org/travel/detail.asp?p=b2466)

Downtown Holland is home to more than 120 specialty shops, galleries, and restaurants. Holland is a year-round haven for shoppers. The only authentic Dutch windmill in the United States is located here. This 278-year-old 12-story giant is located on Windmill Island.

This route takes you right through Oconto, WI, which is a great place to stop for pizza at Brother's Three. Get the meaty people pizza and ask for sauerkraut on it. Great pizza, and a large WILL fill up four people.

Yup, Holland MI does have the only orignal Dutch windmill in the US.

But, Little Chute, WI is working on their own transplant of an original Dutch windmill. The windmill will be built in Holland, then dismantled, shipped over and reassembled in Little Chute by the same Dutch craftsmen.

Being as I am a 1st gerneration Dutch immigrant (I really did come over on da boat from da old country) this is a soft spot for me. My parents and I came to the Little Chute area from our landing on the Jersey shore in 59. We landed on a Thurday in early June, and by the following Monday my dad was working as a VW mechanic in Appleton, WI. The rest is our history.

The ride from Makinaw down through Green Bay to West Bend is a nice easy run, with great views along the top of Lake Michigan. From Green Bay down its typical, beautiful, Wisonsin farmland. The area I'm proud to call home for many years. Stop in downtown Manitowoc at the Wisconsin Maritime Mueseum to see the style of WWII subs built in Manitowoc. Really interesting. Have lunch at the Fat Seagull only blocks from the sub.

Thanks Andy for some wonderful insights and dining recommendations. Each day or so I will add another spot along, Riding on the Edge (http://www.vtbmwmov.org/Stories_articles/070220%20Riding%20On%20The%20Edge.pdf). Hopefully other Wolverines and Badgers will add insights as thoughtful as yours. All of us coming from the East Coast will benefit either before or after the rally.

Thanks Again

About the Lake Express Ferry (http://www.lake-express.com/about/about.aspx) <- Check it out

Muskegon is one of two cities in Michigan where riders can take a shortcut across Lake Michigan. The other city is Ludington, further north. Muskegon’s historic district, the Hackley & Hume Historic sites, are classic examples of restored Victorian Mansions. These homes have been featured on Bob Vila’s television program.

There are many historic points of interest such as lighthouses, a much-decorated World War II submarine, and a restored 1895 train depot.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/SubmarineinMuskegon.jpg

Muskegon has to have a sense of humor. In addition to a submarine, Muskegon also has an LST better know to old Navy hands as a Large Slow Target. Walk where heroes have walked! Of the 1,151 LST class ships built during WWII, the LST393 (http://www.lst393.org/) is one of only two remaining.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/LST.jpg

Hart is 40 miles north of Muskegon. Muskegon is one of two cities on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan where pilgrims could catch the ferry to Wisconsin. But you have decided to Ride on The Edge. Smart move - it is the ride, not the destination.

Hart is for shopping and relaxing. Park right in front of the store or restaurant since there are no parking meters in town.

The Hart/Montague Bicycle trail runs through the heart of town and you can camp on the shores of Hart Lake at John Gurney Park or stay in one of B&B’s or hotels. The famous Silver Lake Sand Dunes are only 7 minutes away.

Hey, GS folk. You are welcome to ride the dunes. Plan to camp on the shores of Hart Lake at John Gurney Park for the night and spend some time riding the dunes. Motorcycles are welcome. :thumb

TELEPHONE: 231-873-3083

John Gurney Park is located in Oceana County in the city of Hart, on Hart Lake. Three blocks from downtown shopping and restaurants. Eight miles from Lake Michigan, Silver Lake, and Pentwater. Public boat launch. Small swimming beach. Tennis. Horseshoes. Shuffleboard. Basketball. New restroom/shower facility. 105 grassy, mostly shaded sites. Rustic, water/electric, or full hook-up sites. Call 231.873.4959 to make reservations.

Did I mention motorcycles are welcome on the dunes? :kiss

Leave Hart on RT-31 and you are 23 miles from Ludington, the second Michigan port where ferries cross to Wisconsin. All aboard for Ludington. Stay tuned. ->

Ludington (http://www.michigan.org/travel/city/index.asp?city=G3257)

Beware fair Ludington's siren song. If you stop here you might fall in love with this fair part of Michigan and never make it to the rally.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/SirenSong.jpg

One of Michigan's featured Beach Towns, Ludington and Mason County are home to

historic lighthouses
miles of Lake Michigan beaches
rolling sand dunes
the Pere Marquette National Scenic River
Ludington State Park
the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness
Manistee National Forest area
largest charter fishing fleet on the Great Lakes.

If you have decided to turn left now and head to Wisconsin Lake Michigan does get in the way. But you are in luck. Use the S.S. Badget, the oldest and biggest coal fired ship left in service in the nation. The Lake Michigan car ferry service carries 620 passengers and 180 vehicles between Ludington, MI and Manitowoc, WI. And, mention the MOA and you get a discount.

Big Ship, More Fun! The 410ft S.S. Badger's spacious outside decks, buffet restaurant and deli snack bar, children's play areas, staterooms, free movies and entertainment make this relaxing 4-hour cruise the safe, fun and reliable cross-lake connection for passengers, cars and RVs and of course MOA members on their motorcycles.

This link connects to a video about the S.S Badger. Caution, it does take awhile to download.

If you can't wait to get to those pasties (http://www.dobberspasties.com/v2/) take the Badger and you are 150 miles from Escanaba.

Leave Ludington on RT-31 and you are 29 miles from Manistee. Along the way you will pass through Manistee National Forest.

The lake effect is something to keep in mind as your ride the edge, or if you want to ride and cool off from a hot day at the rally.

The temperature along this route can be easily 10 to 15 degrees cooler than just a few miles inland. As you ride the edge you may want a long sleeved t-**** under your riding jacket. If you want take a cool off ride during the rally head to one of the many state, county and local parks that dot the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

Leave Frankfort on RT-31 and you are 23 miles from Empire which is the town in the middle of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

This National Park is a not to be missed stop on your way to West Bend. Enjoy 35 miles of Lake Michigan's coastline, explore North and South Manitou Islands, and climb the dunes! Learn about the history of shipping, logging, and agriculture of the area by visiting former Life-Saving Service/Coast Guard Stations, and Port Oneida Historic District. There are 25 campgrounds (http://www.nps.gov/slbe/planyourvisit/campinginarea.htm) in this National Park (http://www.nps.gov/slbe/). If you are coming with an RV check out these Campsites which range from rustic to full service with RV hook-ups. There are volley ball and basketball courts.

Leave Empire on M-21 and continue on M-22 and you are 38 miles from Northport. You might want to stop at Leland and catch a ferry to visit either one of the Manitou Islands.

Welcome to Northport
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/Northport.jpg

At the northern tip of Leelanau County, Northport was the gateway to Grand Traverse Bay and one of the earlies settlements in the county. Today, the village of Northport boasts a harbor and park, 6 antique shops and several art galleries.

The hills around Northport are filled with cherry and apple orchards. Keep and eye open for cherry and apple orchards that sell locally baked pies.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a lighthouse keeper? This is your chance. The Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum (http://www.grandtraverselighthouse.com/history.htm)is accepting applications to become a volunteer lighthouse keeper. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/PeninsulaMap.jpg

Follow the road less traveled and take a 40 mile detour to explore one of Michigan’s least traveled roads, Route 37. The slim peninsula is home to world class wine production. Numerous farm markets and stands appear throughout summer. Several locations offer pick your own cherries, peaches, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Don’t forget to visit the wineries for a local vintage to share in West Bend. At the northern tip of the Peninsula find Lighthouse Park. A short walk takes you to the classic old lighthouse and beach.

Summer is a bustling time with cherry harvest in full swing. Numerous farm markets and stands appear throughout the season all over the Peninsula. Several locations offer pick your own cherries, peaches, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Summer’s endless activities include hiking, biking, swimming, picnicking, sailing, boating, fishing and antiquing. Patios are open for cocktails and dining. And don’t forget to visit the wineries for wine sampling and beautiful scenery.

Blue water, white sand, gleaming yachts in one of the world’s most beautiful harbors — that’s just the beginning of what makes Charlevoix so captivating. Elegant Victorian homes, white picket fences and vibrant petunias accent the gracious atmosphere.

Wonderful parks provide the perfect place to sit back and simply while away the time.

The Petoskey/Charlevoix area is proud to be ranked #2 in the list of the 100 Best Small Town Getaways published in the June 2007 issue of Midwest Living Magazine. Come see why the editors of this prestigious magazine recognize our area as a "perfect place to escape for a little shopping, sightseeing and relaxing." In their ranking, the editors noted the area's beaches, harbors, shops, and galleries and specifically mentioned Petoskey's Gaslight Shopping District. European fur traders and settlers established a stockade village on the Straits of Mackinac, a key strategic point in the Upper Great Lakes. This settlement was called Michilimackinac, now preserved in time as Colonial Michilimackinac. Outside of the settlement, today's Mackinaw City offers visitors adventures found nowhere else. In the mix of old and new there are 3 other National Historic Sites along with Colonial Michilimackinac. Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, Historic Mill Creek, and Fort Mackinac. MOA Members comments on the bridge (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=17534)

This summer, as the Mackinac Race celebrates its 99th running, the bridge that has become a symbol of triumph to sailors racing in the Mac, will celebrate its 50th birthday. According to the Mackinac Bridge Authority the bridge opened to traffic in 1957 and has provided a passageway between Michigan’s’ upper and lower peninsulas.

Building Big Mac was no easy feat. Tthe idea of a bridge connecting the two peninsulas was suggested in 1888 by Cornelius Vanderbilt II who wanted to increase traffic to The Grand Hotel, located on Mackinac Island. In the years following several ideas were presented including a floating. In 1954, construction for the 1,024,500 ton bridge started and Big Mac opened three years later.
So how do you celebrate a bridges’ 50th birthday? Start with a parade and firework show and much more! The Mackinac Bridge anniversary celebration will take place on July 28th and is full of fun activities for adults and kids alike.
The Iron Workers Skill Demonstration show will give people a feel for what it took to build Big Mac. History buffs will appreciate the Oral History Presentations and Q&A sessions with the ironworkers who built the bridge and members of the Bridge Authority. Oh and don’t forget-no anniversary celebration is complete without cake, and lots of it!
So this year when crossing the “Mighty Mac” on the way to the Rally, wish it a Happy Birthday!

Manistique (http://www.michigan.org/travel/city/index.asp?city=G3272)- # 13 on the Map

Once a thriving lumber town, Manistique is now a central destination for enjoying attractions and recreational activities year round. History buffs can tour Seul Choix Point Lighthouse and Historic Fayette town site. Visit "Big Springs (http://www.uppermichiganwaterfalls.com/Kitchitikipi.html)." Two hundred feet across, the forty foot deep Kitch-iti-kipi is Michigan's largest spring. Over 10,000 gallons of water gush every minute from fissures in the underlying limestone.

Seul Choix Point Light
Seul Choix Point Lighthouse (pronounced SIS-SHWA) in nearby Gulliver, Michigan was built to light the way for the increasing number of vessels carrying the iron ore that was being shipped out of Escanaba,MI. Seul Choix Point Lighthouse is now a community park for everyone to enjoy. Built: 1895 this light, whose name is French for "only choice", was once the center of a thriving fishing community in the only harbor of refuge along this stretch of Lake Michigan. Today, the lighthouse complex is the only thing that remains active.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/ClipArt/DobbersMap.jpg

Escanaba offers marinas, waterfront parks, a shopping mall, a fine arts center, many small town shops, a downhill ski park and tubing run. Escanaba is the home of Dobber’s Pasties (http://www.dobberspasties.com/v2/) located at 827 North Lincoln Road. I once had a flat (Apartment) on Baker Street in London. My local train station was London Marylebone. The West Cornwall Pasty Company had a shop in the station that hooked me on pasties. Pasties are a hearty and hot, hand-held "no dish" meal originally created for Welsh miners who have no time to come above ground for lunch. In time past some miners set their pasties on a mining shovel and held them over head-lamp candles until warmed.

I know where I will stop for lunch on my rally to the Rally. I was so impressed by the Dobber’s website I ordered pasties by phone, 1-800-786-4443. I can’t get back to London’s Marylebone Station soon but I can enjoy the Pasties on my way to West Bend.

After munching on pasties head to Menominee on US-35 to Menominee. The distance is 53 miles but you should arrive before you left since Menominee is in another time zone. Set your watch back on hour if heading west.

Will have bike checked out, fully gassed and ready to roll westward in just one week. Time to finish this thread but there is all of Wisconsin left to go and a part owner of the Green Bay Packers, http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/Hodag.jpg has a special tip to pass on tomorrow morning.

Menominee (http://www.michigan.org/travel/city/index.asp?city=G3303)

Menominee is located at the gateway between the Upper Peninsula and Northeastern Wisconsin. Visitors can enjoy numerous outdoor activities, whatever time of the year. Menominee offer hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and more. Stop and photograph the Menominee North Pier Light Station (http://www.terrypepper.com/lights/michigan/menominee/menominee.htm).

Finding this Light

As you enter Menominee, US-41 takes a jog onto 10th Street and heads in an east/west direction as it passes through town. Continue east on 10th Street towards the lake to 1st street. Turn south onto 1st Street, and turn east onto Harbor Drive. Follow Harbor Drive along the lakeshore until you reach the parking lot at the end of the road. From the parking lot, it is a short walk along a wooden walkway and across large, flat breakwater rocks to the pier. Once on the pier, it is a smooth and easy walk out to the Light.

Bid Adieu To Michigan, twist the throttle and on toward that Grand Old Badger State (http://www.badgerband.com/songs/on_wis_traditional.mp3), Wisconsin and the Rally.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/BuckyBadger.gif Turn on speakers and Click Here (http://www.badgerband.com/songs/on_wis_marching.mp3)

Our next stop is Green Bay. Get there by following US-41 and then I-43 south. The distance is 56 miles.

Distance to the Rally via

Green Bay
Manitowoc
Sheboygan &
Port Washington

is 173 miles. :dance

On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin!
Grand Old Badger State! (http://www.badgerband.com/songs/on_wis_traditional.mp3)

Wisconsin where summer is defined as three months of bad sledding and snow tires are standard on all new cars. Wisconsin is the home of the Green Bay Packers. Someone asked a Green Bay citizen why Nebraska with its rich Corn Husker college football history did not have a professional football team? The man, obviously a Packer fan replied, “Cause then Minnesota would want one too.”

Green Bay (http://www.packercountry.com/)- # 15 on the Map

Green Bay is the home of Lambeau Field (http://www.lambeaufield.com/) and the Pro Football Hall of Fame (http://www.profootballhof.com/). The Pro Football Hall of Fame is open every day of the year except for Christmas. The Football Hall houses the largest collection of pro football memorabilia in the world.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/Hodag.jpg, a part owner of the Green Bay Packers advises to take the tour of the stadium and have lunch at Curly's. Be sure to take off your boots or shoes before you enter Lambeau Field.

Listen to the whispers of legends like Lombardi, Lambeau, Starr and Nitschke during a stroll through the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. Get a glimpse of the stars of the future during Packers training camp. The proud traditions await you, so get in the game.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/HolyofHolies.jpg

Take the opportunity for a top-to-bottom tour of Lambeau Field. Walk through history--
visit the Atrium, the concourses, the Club Level, the private boxes and even the players' tunnel! Tour times vary daily. Please call before you visit to ensure stadium tour times. There will be no tours on home game days. Tickets are sold on a first-come,first-served basis for each day's available tours.

Tours: Adult - $11.00, Senior - $ 10.00, Children - $ 8.00, Children (5 & under) Free

Sheboygan (http://www.sheboygan.org/visitor/index.asp)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/Sheboygan.gif

This is serious!. Be sure to read the links in blue if you plan on stopping in Sheboygan. This stop's reputation exceeds that of any place in Wisconsin or the other 49 states.

Sheboygan exceeds any Burgh in Germany. You will be riding a German motorcycle which gives you a degree of acceptance and an air of Weltlichkeit or worldliness. Don't loose this moment of acceptance just to loose it by doing something dumm like suggesting that you boil a brat. Mein Gott in Himmel.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/ClipArt/Schultz.jpg

Bratwurst, hereafter called "brats", is a hallowed subject in Sheboygan. Some residents modestly refer to Sheboygan as the Bratwurst Capital of the World (http://www.visitsheboygan.com/brats.html). Don't argue with an old German over brats and beer - he'll talk and eat you under the table. When it comes to the manufacture, preparation and ingesting of brats (http://www.bratwurstpages.com/brats.html),.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/PaulBach/Misc%20Stuff/ColonelKlink.jpgOne important point - don't ever boil bratwurst! You may see recipes that call for parboiling or boiling. What they mean to (or ought to) say is simmered in beer or water, usually with chopped onion added. Simmering means bringing the liquid to the temperature at which steam rises from the surface, but not so hot that it bubbles. Boiling will cause the casings to burst.

Sheboygan says it is in First Place. There is no second place.

Continue on I-43 for 30 miles and you arrive in Port Washington.
