When I see a deer whistle I feel the urge to see if the owner of said device wants to buy a bridge in Brooklyn NY.

I never believed they worked either ,but my wife purchased a used vehicle with them installed .It wasn't that I didnt see deer pass in front of the vehice but they seemed to always be moving away from the vehicle . If they were on the side of the road they seemed to leave before getting there . Where with my truck they would be just standing there or running towards the road . I still dont have them on my truck but I did install them on her new truck and I still seem to see the same results .We live in a high deer area . There might be something to them .
How much for that bridge ? Is there a toll fee ? :laugh

As if a deer could not hear your bike coming already. Can you imagine with the hearing capability that one more whistle is changing anything. :dunno

My brother used to drive a company truck with deer whistles installed. I asked him if they work and his response was that he hadn't hit a deer yet. :p
Do I snicker at them? Yep. Saw a set on a 12 year old POS the other day and had quite the chuckle.

Since they are equally effective in keeping elephants away, at least in North America, I consider them a valuable piece of safety equipment for those inclined to attach them to their BMW motorcycles.
Personally, I have spent the money on 3M reflective sheeting for the rear of my bags. That way the deer can see when it is safe to cross the road after I have passed.

Is the bridge troll free?
I know a doctor that used to swear by them. Or at least he used to until he hit a deer on Hwy. 283 one night that totaled his car. The only things seemingly untouched were the two deer whistles in the recesses of the front bumper. He took them off and threw them away.
The problem with deer is they panic. When they panic there is no rhyme or reason to the direction of their flight. To my knowledge there is not one single scientific study that supports their use. There does seem to be one that supports the proposition that they do not work. See http://advance.uconn.edu/2002/021118/02111812.htm .

Easy,
I think it is worse than that. Having hunted deer for over 35 years I can attest to the fact they are "hard wired" to run in front of a vehicle even though if they would just stop and let the vehicle go by they would live.
I've had them running 35 MPH parallel to the road trying to get ahead of me to cross the road!
But the one constant is you can never, with 100% accuracy, predict what they will do.

When I see them far enough in advance and honk my horn they usually move away. I of course am rapidly slowing down, the worst is when they just appear from the side of the road with no time to do anything but start to react. This is why I slow down in deer country with limited visibility to the sides and piss off cages and other riders. I've had a few close calls like this but slowing down has saved me.
My dogs come to me when I whistle, is this the way deer whistles work?:doh

What the heck is it with folks putting deer statues or figurines up in the front yard? I'll be out riding and notice something in the corner of my eye. My brain sees DEER and I immediately begin braking and planning for potential evasive maneuvers.
Then I see that the deer aren't moving and seem to be more of those statues. Although, once in a while the statues will turn and jump away....

Twenty years ago I arrived at my second rally at midnight in Pennsylvania at the Four Winds gathering.
A local club member greeted me, asked where I came from and noticed that I didn't have deer whistles on my bike. I had never heard of them and the next morning he bought me a set.
They have been on my bike ever since and in 350,000 miles I have seen many deer and they always stop and take notice as I go by. I think they like my R100RS.
Maybe I am tempting fate but I beleve in them so on they stay!

What difference does it make to someone else? If it's not your bike and not your money, why do you feel you have any right to comment on the sanity, efficacy or aesthetics of it. Just live and ride your own bike and let others do the same no matter if you do or do not believe in deer whistles, gremlin bells, air horns, chrome, matching paint, custom seats, etc. and so on.
Sheesh, ride, don't talk down someone who's bike differs from yours. Just be happy they ride.

I doubt that is the only thing this type laughs at. It's clearly a holier than though attitude.
I've killed a deer with a motorcycle before. It's not something I would like to do again. I've read numerous articles about deer whistles not working. I don't use one but I don't have the audacity to laugh at somebody who does. To me it just falls into the format of the stereotypical BMW rider. I love the bikes but I despise the attitude.

p.s. the stereotype of the BMW rider is of a tedious older guy who wouldn't know humor of any kind unless it was a rebadged product sold by BMW at a 150% mark up. :stick :ha

"Ass Grabbing" is what happens during spring break in Cancun.
"Grab Assing" is the phrase you meant to use.
Since we're being particular in this thread.... :stick
Deer whistles are just as effective as studded snow tires.
In other words, they're not.

One winter I fitted studded tires to my 500 Triumph. They worked very well in deep snow, crusty snow and on icy roads and frozen lakes.

I should have clarified my comment by saying I was referring to studded automobile tires. All studded car tires do is wear ruts in the pavement that drive us riders crazy. Study after study has shown that studded snow tires provide no handling/braking improvement over a set of quality all-season radials with good tread in the snow, and are much worse than quality all-season tires in anything other than snow.
Here in Washington State, our transportation department estimates that studded snow tires do $84 million in damage a year to our highways. The ruts they produce fill with water in the rain and cause hydroplaning and dangerous spray, which is especially dangerous to riders.

We ride up into British Columbia quite often and it seems we always encounter numerous deer along the side of the road just into Canada on Canada route 6 between the boarder and BC route 3 as in herds of them. The other day I mentioned this to Canadian customs at the boarder and was told that they are licking the salt that washes off the pavement to the dirt shoulder. Coming back I mentioned this to a US customs agent and he confirmed that the deer are after road salt because BC salts the roads in winter pretty heavily. I rarely encounter this phenomena on Washington SR31 from the boarder south maybe because Washington doesn't use sodium chloride? What about the eastern states as I hve heard some really pour on the salt?:nod

My recent close encounter of the deer kind South of La Cross Wisconsin on my way to the GRRR. She bounded out in front of me but balked and reversed directions turning away from me when I grabbed the brakes.
I think it was the brake servos she heard and didn't like, so I won't be needing any screamers.:D

While my front fender was off I decided to take it home and install a rubber mudflap. I thought it'd be a good project for me and my eight-year-old. Dad, of course had his son drill holes in the wrong end of the fender. I don't want to spring the $ to patch and re-paint just yet, so Rinty's 'testimonial' is enuf for me. Since I can't think of anything else to put in there, I may be the guy who discovers they're most effective placed 4 inches apart on the front of the vehichle. ....or not.:brow
