For those of you that will be riding through Northern Michigan and over to the U.P. of Michigan. I can't help but stress the importance of scanning for deer. This is especially when riding across on U.S.- 2. It is a beautiful ride but, the deer have minds of their own.
If you spot a deer crossing in front of you while riding. Slow down as soon as you can in a safe manner. If one deer is crossing. 9 times out of 10 there is more along with the first one that already crossed. So be prepared to see more than one deer at all times.
Do not believe anyone that states deer are nocturnal. Sure they really move around much more at night than during the day but, I see deer all the time.
The worst time for deer movement is sunrise and sunset. They are also much harder to see during these times.
I strongly suggest reading up on David Houghs' writings about safe riding and deer. The small investment is worth much more than having a deer or any other critter that could possibly become a decoration on your BMW.
The only time a deer looks good too me is in the cross hairs of my 30-06 rifle scope, in the form of sausage or butterflied tenders along with mashed potatoes, corn and a fine imported beer.

Thanks for the heads up. I plan to do a loop of the U.P. after the rally. BTW. Do you know of a good place to camp for the night in the U.P.?

I am glad you asked! Once you get on the U.P. side, there is a state park called Straits State Park. It is my favorite state park in Michigan.
The park is located along the banks of the Straits of Mackinaw. The straits seperate Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
Once you set up your tent. You can walk down too the shoreline and you get a beautiful view of the Mackinaw Bridge. At night the bridge is beautifully lighted. It is quite a sight.
You may want to spend a day or two and visit Mackinaw Island. It is kind of a tourist trap but; still a fun experience. If you need anymore information feel free to ask. Me and my wife get up to Mackinaw area on a regular basis. We live 80 miles southeast of Mackinaw.

Thanks for the advice and warning. We'll be hoofing it across the UP on US2, I hope the only wildlife we see is in a National Park! :)

It may be hard to believe but I can honestly say I have seen it snow every month of the year up there, eh? I lived near Marquette for almost 5 years and loved every minute. Hope to retire there. Take the Pictured Rocks boat tour (in Munising) if you have time. It is way, way cool!!

That makes them crepuscular - which they are. At least the ones in Wisconsin are.

Coming home from a Detroit Club Breakfast once, I came around a blind curve and found five deer standing right in the middle of the road. After a panic test of the ABS, I glanced at my watch and both hands were straight up in the Noon position.:nono
