I just replaced the clutch, final drive swing arm bearings and a few other things.

My clutch doesn't slip in 5th gear anymore, yeah and no leaks. I did the engine seal correctly, another yeah.

However, I still have a seldom problem off the tranny missing in 3rd or 4th gear under load going up a hill. The rpm's stay the same, but the beast lurches or seems to miss for a second. I especially noticed at a track day before I went in and did the clutch.

My final drive and all splines everywhere are in great shape.

I think I noticed some silver flakes coming out of the gearbox oil.

I;d like to ride it until the snow flies again before any othe rmajot work.

Any clues as to what may be going on? Any ways to test it? I can't seem to make it happen. One thought was to go up a steep hill a gear at a time and see if I can pin point which gear(s) it's missing/lurching in.

Thanks for the replies.

Im afraid it sounds like the trransmission is going. The more you ride it the more to fix it. (if you elect to rebuild it) This is an all too common problem for BMWs made during the time your was. Im sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.

This bike is expsensive this year. ......whining over.:violin

I bought this bike because I got from a total at 35,000 (greatt price) my friend had dropped it in (article in moa last year "Over my Head")and in doing so it broke the gear shift lever mounting on the tranny. Insurance totalled it, a few other reasons too.

Anyway after having the tranny/footpeg bracket welded and 50,000 miles later I have the above mentioned problem. I can't really see getting the tranny rebuilt because of the condition of the casing. There's a small crack near the pivot bolt mount

I think used is the way to go, what years and models for the r1100 GS will fit in there?

Also I'd rather ride the bike for the rest of the season before swapping the tranny. What can I expect.? I did a 350 mile ride a few days ago and it only skipped once, most if the time I was in the hills.

Thank you for the replys and info!

Andy

The force involved in breaking the shift lever mounting probably bent a shift fork or did other internal damage. It can be repaired; I have used casings lying around here also.

I guess you didn't read the whole page... :)

Hey Anton, thanks for taking the the time and the link to the tranny page.

My tranny number is 0007551DAG M94 Bike manufactured. 04 95

Ok so I know a M94 will fit in there, what about M93 and M97?

it seems M97's casing is different.

I saw the differences lsited on your site but wasn't clear to me if all three would fit in there.

Please be specific as to what will fit in there, and if non GS trannys will work too.

Thank you!

Andy

Any of them will fit, but the M93 is geared differently.

if you go to antons site listed in one of the upper posts he has a picture marked with a red line on a tranny case where the numbers are located, which is running behind the right hand throttle body.

for the manufacture year it's located on the steering head stem on the right hand side.

Anton thanks for the info, since all three will fit in there. I'm assuming it doesn't matter what model they are out of as long as it's a R1100? It seems mostly the gearing is different in the final drive, except for the M93.

Based on your knowledge as far as used trannys go and the three choices available ( ha like I may have that option)what one would be your preference for used? Assuming the all have low mileage.

Thanks, Andy

Shoot its blank there where the red line is. At least I think its blank.

..what one would be your preference for used?
Good question. Remember, I see all of the failures, so I think they're ALL junk. :)

At this point, my personal preference for rebuilt would be an M93 upgraded to roller bearings on the input and with all gears undercut (but only with a matching FD of course). Close second would be an M94; the only difference when all is said and done would be the rubber O-rings. M97s are fine but I have seen a few input shaft problems and those shafts must be replaced as an assembly, twice the cost of the others. The M93/94 input shafts don't fail in the particular way those few 97s have.

However, for a used not-rebuilt, an M97 is probably your best bet because you are more likely to avoid the skipping issue.
