I recently purchased a 1971 R75/5 and the tach needle is off the movement and the odometer appears to be stuck. Does anyone know if there are rebuilt kits available? Parts supplier? Rebuilt and/or rebuild tips?

I just sent my instrument cluster to Palo Alto Speedometer. You can find their ads in both the MOA ON and the RA OTL, as well as the 'Net. I've got a '76 R90/6.

My wife used a local Chicago shop to repair the speedo on her /5, and they did a wonderful job repairing the mechanism and cleaning up the cosmetics of the face and numerals. I think the charge was $125, and they turned it around within one week.

Thanks for the info. guys but has anyone attempted or done any repairs themselves? I'm thinking that if you have the parts repairs can't be that difficult especially replacing a broken needle and cleaning and/or replacing some odometer gears.

They're definitely pretty easy to screw up. My /6 has plastic gears. They have to be in a certain order. It's hard to see how they relate. I messed with it awhile and gave up and just stuck it on the bike. It hasn't worked for years. I used the tach for estimating speed for some number of years, but that finally broke on my way down to Virginia from Detroit last summer, so, I just listen to the engine and eye the road and I can pretty much tell how fast I'm going. Of course I move with the flow of traffic during rush hour commuters and I know the swarm is usually speeding along at 65 to 75 mph. Don't know if the cluster is the next thing I want to get for it, though...

Joe did you happen to notice how the tach needle attaches to the movement? I have not taken the speedo apart yet but see the needle and a round disc laying inside the face.

I believe it just presses on to the shaft with a "friction fit". I was able to take my speedo needle on and off only a couple of times before it got sloppy and wouldn't hold. I don't know if these things are available as parts you can get individually.
