My 1998 K1200RS has a idleing problem. It will go from 500rpm to 1500rpm and sometimes stall out. The bike runs great at all other times pulls hard and does not miss a beat. I have to feather the throttle at Idle to keep it running. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks in advance.

I saw some variation in idle on my K1200RS, but not as wide as range as you relate. I would guess that one of the rubber tubes between the charcoal canister and the throttle bodies might have split due to age and is causing an air leak.

Sounds like a good guess.

If it was a BMW car, I'd check for vacuum leaks, the oxygen sensor and the mass air flow sensor.

I just bought a very low mileage (<3K) 04 RS that runs poorly when cold including stalling. I was told there was an ECM update that was being covered by BMW. When I called the dealer they said that was true but even though my bike is under warranty until December, they only covered the upgrade for the first year. Now it is $900.00 out of pocket. Anyone have any insight?

Try harder. If your dealer won't go to bat for you, call BMW. also find out who the regional rep is, contact him / her.

If you are not pleased, the other route is to go through MOA's consumer affairs liason, he seems to get some satisfactory results. Don't take his queries as insults, he seems to do a good job identifying what causes he needs to go to bat on.

I had this done to my '04 K1200GT. The dealer did it for free and they had not sold the bike to me. They have some flexibility but must get prior approval from BMW. My bike was more than 1 yr old at the time. Before you spend the money (IF it comes to that), it made NO discernable difference on my bike but our issues could be different.

I agree with Bob. In Steeler Country you have the choice of at least three dealerships and the dealers know it. The bike is under warranty and if it doesn't run right, the dealer has an obligation to fix it. Typical symptoms are that the engine will stall righyt after starting it up cold if you twist the throttle. With the proper ECU program, it will pick up without stalling right after startig the engine.

Jurgen- You are the one that pointed it out to me at last Saturday's 4Winds meeting. That is the answer I got at this point from Wexford.
