Anyone know any cool campgrounds or spots where you can camp right on the beach in NC?

There's a National Park campground located across Highway 12 from the Coast Guard Station at Oregon Inlet. BeauCoos of sand there for sure.

There's also a great campground called Camp Hatteras at Waves, NC, just south of the big game preserve after you cross the Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet. You can get a site on the sound side literally with the water lapping up to the site. On the ocean side, there's a large dune between the sites and the ocean itself, which is the case all along there until you get to Ocracoke after crossing the ferry just south of the lighthouse. When's your trip going to be? If it's soon, there'll be plenty of vacancies and few bugs. April and November are the best months in my opinion.....

You can see it up close and personal on Google Maps if you select the Hybrid view which shows street names along with the sattelite photo. Camp Hatteras is between South Shore Drive and MAC-OCA Drive, which borders a KOA campground, also a good choice.

The most interesting area of the Outer Banks is the island of Ocracoke. Home of Blackbeard the Pirate, the locals are of the independent type and they like their hideaway.
Might be able to find a good place to set up a campsite if you ask some of them.

John,
you seem to know your way around the NC coast. Can you suggest a good sailing venue for a weekend for two? I am an experienced boardsailer and enjoy high wind, flat water sailing. The SO would want to read on the beach and enjoy comfortable accomodation.
