I'd like to put a shorter windshield on my '04 GT but can't figure out how to remove the fasteners without destroying them. I've carefully read and re-read the instructions on the Pirate's Lair website and attempted the removal on my bike (without being too aggressive). Seems like one of those jobs that looks like a piece of cake but ends up taking hours, causing misery and damages parts. Any tricks out there?
Thank you!

You don't remove the whole fastener, you poke out the pin in the middle. Push the pin with a little hex wrench, from the outside of the bike toward the middle. The upper ones are easier to reach than the lower ones.
For my aftermarket windshield, I then remove the 4 spacers from the stock, and store them some place safe.
Good luck!

Good luck!Gail - thanks so much for the feedback. You've de-mystified the process for me. You and I have identical bikes and I want to put the same Ztechnik shield on mine. I went to your blog (great work!) and noticed in one of your pictures you were sitting VERY upright. What are those bar risers you are using to get that positioning?
Thanks again,
Curt

Check out Pirate's Lair. They sell TONS of great stuff for the K1200RS & GT's.

Doesn't show the windshield as an available part ...

You're right, the part is for a K12RS. But it fits very nicely on the GT.
I got it for the same reason Curt said, to get some air support. Of course I promptly intalled it at Christmas time, and it's been a wee bit cold with all that breeze :doh , but the wind feels great at speed, I know I'm going to love it if/when we ever get some hot weather. I don't like it when cruising at 80, to much wind, my neck is not used to it, but 70 is fine.

OK ... didn't know how it would fit with the slightly different GT bodywork around the windshield.

I received the new Ztechnik short windshield today from Pirate's Lair. This is a beautifully crafted windscreen. Removal of the fasteners was a breeze compared to what I was ready for judging by the instructions. It took all of five minutes to get all four fasteners out and the same time to install the new windshield.
Permormance of the short Ztechnik is outstanding. Even at 15 MPH, you can feel the flow of smooth air. At 50 MPH, the airflow is quite pleasant and supporting. The combination of forward lean and the lack of supporting air flow with the stock screen, my neck would get sore in fairly short order supporting the weight of the helmet. This shield solves the problem and looks much better than the stock shield as a bonus.
