View Full Version : timing chain cover leak
There is a small amount of oil finding its way out the bottom of the timing chain cover. It is not between the cover and the block, it is just forward of that, where there appears to be a little vent. I am thinking that some oil must find it way in there to lubricate the timing chain, is that correct? Also what the potential problems, I hope I don't need major bottom end work, since I just redid the top. The amount of oil is not enough to drip on the garage floor, but it does put a little oil on the header pipe.

It is not between the cover and the block, it is just forward of that, where there appears to be a little vent.If it is NOT between the timing chain cover and the block, then it is between the timing chain cover and the front cover. That means that either your cam seal or alternator (crank) seal are shot. Pull the front cover off and LOOK. You don't HAVE to remove the timing chain cover to replace either (or both) seals. The alternator rotor pops off with a $5 puller bolt or you can make the "special tool" with a couple of grade 8 bolts. The points (or ignition trigger) stuff will just pull off after removing a couple of screws. No big deal either way.

Don't forget to remove the battery negative cable before taking off the timing cover. I know everyone is supposed to know this, but I forget occasionally too. :)
Thanks for the input. If my diagnosis, and you solution are correct then I will be very happy. I will hopefully tackle this tommorrow.

Sbrick: with a name like sbrick it makes me wonder- is this an airhead you are talking about? you never mentioned what model you are working on. DP
1979 R100S is the ride, the user name has to do with what others do to my real name.

gotcha! My 86 R80 developed a small leak right behind the front plate (behind the black timing cover) it always seemed easier to spray some Gunk on it and toothbrush it, or not look at it. Seemed too small to worry about on an 18 year bike! We've got about 18 inches of snow up here, so no riding for a while! Dave

My 86 R80 did the exact same thing. Hmmm.
