Come one and all and let's see if we can make this thread a sticky like the Thumpers have.

These are my rides parked in the garage, with about 2 feet of some boxed things between them cropped out.

Like the line in my signature says, each day's drive is a tough choice I love (except maybe during the daytime late June to mid-September). That's the HOT days, cool nights of living in an arid area, so I try to only ride at night then.

I'll post some side shots later but wanted to get this thread started.

Now it's your turn.:brad

I love this bike!:dance

I rode an ST today at the BMW-MC/LV spring open house. Nice. I was funny though, one of my friends was complaining about the butt to footpeg ergos. Gave him cramps. I told him that MY ST (Triumph Sprint) was the same way, if I hadn't ridden it in a while, it would give me some kinda ju-ju in the hips, but not to worry your body will get used to it.

Well guess what, this thing gave ME cramps. I was rather amazed that the riding position was almost identical to my Triumph.

I hope BMW does very well with these bikes. They seem to be very nice.

I hope BMW does very well with these bikes. They seem to be very nice.

All I can say after owning it for 3 weeks, today, and putting 550 miles on it (that's 150 past break-in) is:

1. It is built like a BMW. All class, great engineering, everything in its place, and it all works well so far!
2. Goes like stink to an 8.5K rpm red-line, until my eyeballs hurt (and I wear a nice, light Shoei X-11 full face helmet), stops linear with upright dive-avoid ABS as fast or faster than it goes. (If you overdo the front brake, the suspension tightens; do it in the right range and it doesn't).
3. Handles with leg pushes (arms nearly superfluous) with low COG, light on its feet, side to side flick-ability, but stable in the wind, and going straight as an arrow referenced to a white highway line at 85+ through mountain passes.
4. Gets a solid 60+ mpg, I have filled its 5 gallon tank 2X since I own it (my third tankful was Friday night, so it still full). My car will pull 22 mpg riding the same stretches).

I love it. Have a rear seat cover, LED replacement taillight, and RKA tank bag and sport saddle bags on order for it, too. Should have all those things, and pics to go with by the end of the month (the RKA order ships 4/27/07).

I want saddlebags that go on AND COME OFF with no mounting hardware left. Week-wise, the tank bag alone will do.

Anyone want to buy a nice Chase Harper set of tank bag and saddlebags (the tank bag is magnetic) at a low price?:laugh

By the way your ST is nice-I almost bought one before my last bike, a Suzuki Bandit ABS edition. All three have the same riding position. I guess we like it, but I've never had leg cramps. I use my legs like the Pridmore's taught me to do 11 years ago in CLASS. It is much easier to do on this low COG bike. You can't believe what a low COG 400 lbs bike can do just with leg throws.

60+ mpg ?!?!?! :jawdrop

60+ mpg ?!?!?! :jawdrop

Let's see 2 fills after one full tank, with one still in tank is less than 10 gallons, and the odometer is over 550. So if it's not exactly 60+ it's awful close, and both fills were just a tad over 3.2 gallons, so I'd say 60+ is a good approximation.

The damn thing only weighs 440 lbs full anyway. That about 50 or more less than the R12r or rs and about 100 or more less than the K models.

I'll let you know better after this week and a host of near red-line highway entries. Still it is 60+ so far, and the instant fuel mileage on the display shows it cruising mpg as 49-65 depending on uphill-downhill, and 4th-5th or 6th gear (there are times at 60-65 where 5th gear gets better gas mileage then 6th gear.

It's also fun to watch the display go to 199 mpg as I coast off a freeway ramp and show - - - when stopped at a red light.

I would venture to say it would be better as a "Sticky" if it was just a picture of your [bike] with a short comment.

No long ride reports.
No distracting cages.
No dialogue about how great it is.

Just a nice picture of someplace you took it.

But that's just me.

Y2K BMW R1200C and a '95 DUC 900SSCR

The F800S reminds me of the DUC, half fairing, lightweight and all. (see red bike in bkgnd)

Here's the rub ... wifey sez if you want another bike, you've gotta sell one. Not like I have enough time to ride 3 anyhow. Dilemma is which one? The other day pulling into the gargage I said to self ... damn the R1200C is gorgeous ... so I dunno. I take the DUC to a few track days each year but the F800S/ST would lend itself to that. Then again ... risking a new bike ...

Decisions decisions ... trying to hold out til 2008 B'day present. Gotta see what kinda riding I do this year.

I understand the rules you list are probably needed to make it a sticky, I just wanted to get it started already. Still, the word "thump" should not be used here, as these twins don't do any such thing and a "thumper" is THE name of a single. The engine is way too sweet and smooth to compare it or make it analogous to one.

My pic has NO "distracting" cage; it just follows what I say in my signature. If you want to call my RX-8 distracting, you can't appreciate the engine of an F800 anyway. The two drive trains are quite a match in RPM and gear ratios@speed.

I have heard a GS might be available in 2008, but you can't get any guarantee on it. Good luck in your hunt.

I'll follow up with some pics of someplace I took it, as the weeks roll on. My next long trip is May 18. Between now and then I'll use it every day I can while we are cool here, when we should not be. Today's high was 74, not the 90 it should be, yet. Meanwhile the NE had floods. Weird science.

I feel sorry for you. :cry Me, I'd dump the over 500 lb-er, or the one closest to it. Yes, the R1200C is gorgeous, the F800S is prettier to me.:D

The DUC looks nice - I can't see its configuration or model well, but the S looks like it would be closer than the ST. I found the S fit my 5'11" frame better than the ST, but taller people find the ST a better fit.

Great pics, tho. As a suggestion, sell both and buy one of each, the gas mileage is better on the F800.:rofl

Hope you like the F800S, Yellow_S-I love mine. It suits my 5'11.5" 170 lb frame perfectly upright, or bent over as a choice (but over 80 mph I sometimes bend a little):laugh.

I get a steady 60-80 mpg on highway, a 30-55 mpg on street, and generally if I commute on it for a few days, a 55-62 mpg average.

The on-board optional computer shows average mpg and instant mpg (sometimes it shows over 100 mpg), average speed, and outside temperature. I also have the TPMS option and that is displayed, too. The gear speed indicator is a nice touch too.

Lots of fun to quick look at while watching the road (always!). Sometimes, though it is interesting to compare instant mpg at same speed in 4th, 5th, and 6th, since it does not always get best gas mileage in 6th, or 5th, when going 40-60 mph. Weird, but true.

Well, I took the F800S in for the 600 mile service this morning at 10AM Mountain Standard Time (we never switch to Daylight Time, here). Picked it up at 4:15PM not from that, as it passed the service great (reporting no shards of metal in the oil whatsover), and told me I did the break-in perfectly.

The problem was I have the TPM system which has been weird since day One. When it reports an error, it sticks, and was 3 lbs. low on several calibrated gauges. Finally, they check, and, aha, there was a software upgrade, which they did, and they said it's Ok now. We'll see.

Great dealing with Richard Battles of RKA. He ran over to the nearest BMW dealer after I called him because he had never fit an F800 before, but can now! AND HOW!

Saddlebags will be part-time as needed but tank bag will see full-time duty. Notice how the gas cap is still accessible, and on the other side it clears the exhaust, well.

The best news is all of this was less than the BMW tank bag for navigator.

Thanks riders, I like them too, but I only use saddlebags as needed, not fulltime, ergo, frameless, strap ons.
No changing rack or left over frames.

Got the whole set, saddlebags and tank bag from RKA Luggage. I have dealt with them before and they are great! Talk to Richard Battles, he is so knowledgeable, nice, and a fellow BMW MC afflicted one like us!

See it here: http://www.rka-luggage.com/A08%20BMW/F800/F800.html

Wow. What a great conversation about 800s. Very helpful to someone who's thinking about buying one.
I own an R1200RT which I love. But below 8mph it's tippy and my inseam is 29"
I've started shopping for seats - then a couple of days ago I read an 800 review in
ON and have begun to think the smart move may be to an 800ST.
I found a discussion group in which there were some cautionary comments about
handle bar vibration on the ST. Anyone had problems with that?

First off - it's a twin. Vibration is a given.

Lastly, it's a twin but it has the least amount of vibration I have ever felt in a twin.

At any speed I can clearly see whether the car in the distance behind has blue and red lights or not.

Any vibration I have felt is a light buzz on the grips. It varies depending on the rpm but it is never more than a buzz.

Beautiful, Dave. Nice setup. Have you been over to f800riders.org or f800depot.com yet? The first is a F800 forum that is great for us USA-ers, because it includes EC, SA, and AU residents that had the bike a year or so before us, and the latter is a new F800 farkels store that just opened up with all kinds of F800 goodies, some you have, a few you don't. Your bike is well-equipped and looking loooooong road ready.

What part of the US are you and it in? I am in the desert SW (AZ to be exact).

Going out of town in a half hour for a whole week, away from the email, so if you return post and I don't reply soon, kindly understand. Meanwhile, enjoy the riding, mine is tied up to its Battery Tender while we run 110-115 as daytime highs.

In a few weeks, I will steal away early morn and ride with a local BMW club to the Alps-like part of AZ in Alpine and Greer. It's cool there, and and we will do a 191 (née 666) run to wear ourselves out for nice BBQ in the Alps, and a day ride back after a night's stay in Alpine. Then back on the ole BT while we have Monsoon for a week.

Thanks Tweety, I'm a member over at the F800 board under another name, it really has been useful, especially in figuring out the electrical accessories. Although President Madison tried to make us part of the US in 1812, :laugh I'm not in the US, but in southern Ontario near Detroit.

Wezul, if you want to PM me I can forward some pics of the GPS and electrical setup for you.

I sometimes am on my toes with my '07 R12RT. I flatfoot my F800ST.

I recently (about three weeks ago) bought a new F800ST. It is all I expected. I think BMW has made a good choice in producing this model. I've only put about 400+ miles on it so far, but have a trip planned in July that will turnup the miles.

First try on posting image didn't work, image to large here is a second try. Also, with this bike I have 47 years of BMW's in my garage: 1960 R26, 1983 R80RT and now a 2007 F800ST. One of my friends said I have now entered the 21st Century with my bikes.

Very nice coyotebmw! Is that a Marsee tank bag I spy on yours? Been thinking about one with an A-type setup to power some items like GPS, etc. Thanks for the reply in advance and welcome to the 21st century.

Enjoy it and the joy it brings.:bliss I have 1600 miles on mine, right now waiting in the garage on its Battery Tender while out of town, and taking a nice long trip in two weeks with five other beemers.

3400 Miles on my F800ST.
Still love it.
Why?
Just as responsive as my old 650...only 50 pounds heavier...30 more HP...one more gear...quick...always seems to have more to give.

has anyone tried bar-end weights to help with the vibration? they help on my ST1300. I'm thinking about the F800ST next year when I've put some more miles on this bike and give BMW some time to sort out the new models.

The bike comes with bar weights. My F800S has no noticeable vibration at all, so it might be a bike by bike thing. YMMV:thumb

Meanwhile, I put 600+ miles on this weekend, going up to Greer, AZ from Phoenix, through NM, and taking the 60 (right through Salt River Canyon-what a view) back, ranging 40 degrees back to 104, and saw plenty of deer during the trip, including two on the road we managed to see in time, and had to honk at them to move. :laugh

I was wearing Field Sheer mesh gloves, and mesh jacket, pants, with that new dry fit shirt, briefs, and socks. It works well, but you also need a rain suit to cover the mesh for those 40 degree rides.

I did a comparison of power to weight between the R1200ST, the K1200S and the F800ST. The F800 is within a couple of tenths of the power to weight of the larger R-bike! This bike has got lots of looks and complements everywhere I go. BMW has surley created a winner with this bike!:clap :clap http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/images/smilies/clap.gif

I bought an F800ST in August and put 2,300 miles on it. Loved the bike and had none of the problems that have been described in numerous forums and was getting about 50 mpg. Its a great bike. Sadly, I needed to get rid of it and get something that puts me in more upright riding position because of neck issues. I added barbacks, panniers, top case, mirror extenders and a CalSci windscreen. I loved that bike:

Tweety, which Zumo mount is that? Can you post a pic from the side of the Zumo on the bike?

thx

Haven't taken a pic of mine from the side, as the garage needs a clean out and is a little too crowded around the bike. But the mount is a ZTechnik setup, available from any BMW dealer or from techmounts.com, and it comes in two pieces, a Z6131 mount and a Z6201 GPS top plate. Search ZTechnik, go to website, under products select bike, and it'll show you the two in a list of all their products for yours.

I have to say, 1) the quality is EXCELLENT and 2) with adjustments fore and aft, up and down, and tilt angle sideways, the utility of the mount is beyond excellent, to sublime. I could not recommend a better add-on if you want a GPS, and I am considering a second for the throttle side, for mounting my V1 radar detector, as I have done the brake reservoir mod seen on f800riders.org, and removed the bracket from that side.

Here is a photo of the Z6131 mount:

On the F800riders.org forum, there is a thread in the How To section on doing what is called the Front Brake Mod. Here's mine nice and close up all done. I did it about 1,000 miles ago and it's all good. No more high bracket!

It uses BMW parts mostly from the new K series.

I don't know Tweets, while I'm sorry for you, I really like my ST (Thank you Kbasa, for the great review and suggestion). Break your melancholy, get the beasty fixed and get riding! There has to be a fix, my guys at Cycle Werks really seem to know what they are doing. It's electrical, this has to be a problem with a solution. If you love the bike like I believe you do, hang in there and hunt the solution, I'd be willing to assist. Or jump the lemon law if applicable and get something else. The point is I guess, I feel for you and the thing that bugs me most is you can't ride.
*Shooting you the good vibes*
Cheer up!

Thanks, Wezul. The techs have been up, down, time and again, and just can't seem to eradicate the e-gremlin. Each time something seems fixed, another manifestation arises, making the bike a confirmed lemon (on 10/9 it is official).

Pursuant to a recent request, I have sent BMW NA my purchase contract and other documents for costs, and I am awaiting a buy-back determination offer. But they don't move fast.

Until then, nada, but I cannot see an ST in my future because 1) ergos are not there for my body, arm and leg sizes, and 2) the lower fairing raises enough rider heat issues, I'd lose a month or 2 of riding each year here in the WARM Phoenix area. We just broke summer heat and now we are seeing 80-90 degree highs. Right now @ 9:30 MST we are 73 after some drizzle/rain. I WANT TO RIDE but no bike.

I see a another bike soon, but soon may still be a month out. :banghead

P.S. Don't feel to sorry. On 10/13, I fly to Puerto Vallarta to meet a group, for riding into Guadalajara for the XII International BMW MC Rally. We do 2 days in GDL (one of which is train/bus travel to where Tequila is made), and then ride through the jungle back to PV for sun, beach, and bar-b-que. A R12GS as the grand prize, will be given away Saturday. Sunday I fly home. My buddies are riding 10/10 from here, we meet 10/13, but I lose the 2 days of all day riding back home.

I like the BMW's and each one has had good and bad points. The F800GS is well balanced light and quick. The power for passing is a little less than the 1200 but lots more than the R100. The engine is tractable and performs well on dirt/gravel roads. The brakes are great and I like losing the servos. The ABS is seamless and activates when needed. The windshield is too low and puts all the bugs on my visor. All in all I like this bike.

Got the F800GS home last Thursday evening. Spent friday afternoon putting on all the accessories I bought for it.

http://www.telusplanet.net/public/millerea/Photos/F800GS12009-03-22%2013-18-35sm.jpg
Boxes of extras to install.

http://www.telusplanet.net/public/millerea/Photos/F800GS22009-03-22%2013-18-36sm.jpg
All unpacked and ready to go on.

http://www.telusplanet.net/public/millerea/Photos/F800GS52009-03-22%2013-18-37sm.jpg
All installed a ready to go.

Still have to get the GPS wired in and the Gerbings. Also going to build a rear luggage plate and find a tank bag.

Now go out and get it DIRTY! Are you aware of the GPS connector for direct wiring to the canbus? It is easy to use and very convenient.

Its been dirty a couple of times all ready. First service is done too. I wired the GPS to the battery so it stays on when the bike is off. The Canbus source shuts down a few minutes after the bike is off whic is not what I wanted. I do plan to tap it for an Autocom system as I did with my wifes ST.

Actually I was in the mkt for the Graphitan (I really like how that color integrates w/ the saddle bags) but got a good deal on the Blue. It's really grown in me.
