NEW YORK - Kurt Vonnegut mixed the bitter and funny with a touch of the profound in books such as "Slaughterhouse-Five," "Cat's Cradle," and "Hocus Pocus."

Gone at 84.

I still haven't read any of his stuff, but it's on my list. I think I first heard of him back in college when some friends of mine formed a band called Kilgore Trout.

My dear departed friend Patrick William Callahan convinced me to read it back in the day, the memory of Pat and that book will be eternally linked for me. Thanks, Kurt, (insert deity here)'s Speed.
