Hello, new member here...been riding for few years, finally joined
the MOA...
Heading north end of May, or so, very flexible on dates, from
Ohio across midwest and then to Alaska. Had another fellow
that was to go and he cancelled out on me just couple days
ago.
If anyone would like to head north, drop me a line...I'm figuring
a month to 6 weeks at most, can't do longer than that.
Camping's ok with me, but nice warm room with shower and bed sounds
more attractive. I worked out most of the routes up there on paper,
but like any trip, things always change...so if you're interested, lets
do it.
happy trails,
zinger :usa

I can't go, but where are you at in Ohio?
The following you might find helpful. It's my 1999 trip from NW Ohio to Alaska and the NWT. If helpful, great. If not, that's OK too.

Hey Doug, great link, thanks for sharing, started reading tonight,
found some very useful info. Too bad you can't go.
I'm located in SE Ohio, close to Tappan and Piedmont Lake,
20 miles below New Philadelphia. Where is Pemberville?

Cool, glad to help. Don't rub it in too much that I can't go.... I'd like to. :)

Ah, OK. I've been past Tappan Lake on 250, I like to take 250 from Sandusky all the way into WV / VA. Matter of fact, I've been telling Concours riders (I own one, besides my GS) from the west to take 250 into the Nat'l COG Rally in Davis WV this August.
Pemberville is near Bowling Green. On a map, look at Bowling Green (south of Toledo), then take OH-105 east along the Portage River. It's one of maybe 2 twisty roads in flat NW Ohio, and I live right on 105 in downtown Pemberville, about 10 miles out of BG.

Ok, got you....yeah, it's flat up there allright...got plenty of
good riding down here though.. 250 could be nasty if you
aren't careful. 800 is nice too all the way down to the river,
then ferry at Fly, and over into WV.
I'm sure I'll be talking to you some more as soon as I read
your whole report....you don't mind passing out some advice
I hope..
take care,
goran

Agreed on 250 risk if not cautious - that might be why I like it! Well, and because it gets better and better the further you go south.
No problem on advice. There's also many many Alaska trip reports out there if you browse a bit on Google. Many are good, you'll learn a bit from each one.

I'm starting to find that out...seems like lots of people have
rode up and back...starting to think 1 month won't be enough. :dunno
If you're down here in my neck of the woods sometime, we'll
have to get together for coffee or something.
Back to planning for me.

Hey,
I am just begining to plan a trip to Alaska myself. I'll be riding from Vermont. I hadn't set a date but was going to ask around about the best time of year to be up there. I had been thinking later in the summer but June might work. Do you have specific goals as far as where you are going to ride to? I am a musher so I am planning on visting some folks along the way. I have a friend that just moved from here to Kalisof so I hope to stop in there. I also know a couple of people in Two Rivers and someone else near White Horse B.C.

One month was enough for me, mostly because that's all I could get off. But if I could have gotten 6 weeks off, I'd have been gone 6 weeks.
<<< If you're down here in my neck of the woods sometime, we'll have to get together for coffee or something. >>>
Will be passing through around the first week of August, on my way to the Concours Owners Group Nat'l Rally in Davis WV at that time. Maybe catch you then for a bit.

Have fun!

Zinger, you have picked the best time to come north to Alaska. Most folk seem to want to come up north in late July/August. I live in Whitehorse Yukon and August is Fall and the weather can be cold. However, June weather can be great and you will have long days because of the extended light. Be sure to stop at the Liard Hotsprings on the way up the Alaska Highway. Also, you might want to consider taking the Steward/Cassiar Highway back instead of the Alaska (BC highway #37) it is a great road - a little more rustic than the Alaska. If you are in Whitehorse in June give me a call and come over for coffee or a beer.

I've taken the Alaska ride (to or from Indiana) three times since 1983. I always go in mid-July and have had decent weather for the most part. Each trip has been ride one way and fly back the other. Bought a bike up there, sold one up there and shipped one there. While in Skagway, you definately will want to ride the White Pass & Yukon.

Thanks for so much great advice, I've got some ideas on stops
and things to see that I've got from the Milepost, but as always
people that have been there and done that are the best info
source.
Ken, I'll pm you soon as I get chance, I'm in
a bit of a rush today with holiday weekend and all. It'd be great
to hook up if possible.
Doug 10-4 on that...

Mike is bang on!
If you have an extra day or two, consider the South Klondike (Hwy2) south from Whitehorse to Skagway. Incredible trip.
BTW... Mike....we really liked Whitehorse. You're lucky to call it home!

I plan to leave northern Utah on June 10th and expect to arrive in Fairbanks about the 15th. I'm riding solo to Fairbanks but would like to join some riders for the Dalton part of the ride to Deadhorse. Is Deadhorse in your plans? If so, and if you think you might be in Fairbanks about that time, let me know.

:thumb Will do Tuck, I think I should be there same time you are. I'm planning
10-12 days to get there from OH, so we can hook up in F. My itinerary'll
be very flexible, but I'm basically shooting for same destinations you
mentioned. Hope to see you up there. BTW, excellent crew at the
BMW shop in SL City you guys have.
