Coming up on "4 weeks ago" I took my R850R to Velocity Motorcycles in Richmond VA. to get some fluids changed, valves adjusted and throttle bodies balanced. I haven't had the bike long and didn't know the real maintenance history. I wanted a base line tune up.

2 weeks ago I call, they say they had problems with the head bolts not torqueing right and orderd new bolts from Mortons in Fredericksburg. 1 week ago I call, they are still waiting for the bolts. This past Friday I call, they say they will be here Saturday. I call today (monday) they say they got the wrong bolts. Is it that hard to get head bolts for a 1996 oilhead? I don't know, really. I'm asking.:banghead :dunno

Anyway, it's awesome here in Virginia now. I want to ride my BMW. Until then my Triumph Legend has never let me down and is my best friend now.

Sorry for the rant.

The last time I looked an R850R did not have head bolts. It has long studs that extend through the cylinder, heads, and rocker assemblies. There is one additional 8mm bolt and a couple of small cap screws too.

Furthermore - the routine maintenance on this motorcycle calls for retorquing the heads at the 600 mile service ONLY - and then not to disturb the head torque unless a new gasket were being installed. Or: if for some reason they had to adjust end play on the rocker arms.

If that were my bike I would go visit it and talk to the mechanic who is working on it. I would find out what is really wrong and what needs to be fixed.

did he mean "head bolts" or "rocker arm cover bolts"???

i couldn't imagine a shop that does valve adjustments all the time screwing up the valve cover torque, esp with seals and rubber grommits

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Velocity is supposed to be a pretty good outfit.

I'm sure, and hope he mean't "rocker arm cover bolts".

I saw in the maintenance book that a Harley dealer serviced it once.

Yes I think I'm going down there to see exactly what is going on.

They are some great guys there, I'm just Bnewbie.

I know it may not make you feel any better right now, but (as you may know) those folks work on some pretty old, rare and/or "exotic" bikes. I would think they are competant enough to do your R right. I sure hope they get it right soon. That is a nice bike you bought. Once back on the road you need to post some more pictures. Let us now what happens.

I know in the end it will all be good......Just got a little impatient/frustrated.

I'm cool....Can't wait.

If anyone needed another argument for doing their own maintenance, this would be a good one.

The really sad part is that when you get your bike back, you wallet will be lightened by probably the exact amount it would have cost to buy a really nice tool to sync your throttle bodies with, for the rest of your life. (that and you would have been riding your bike for a month)

Just got the back home. 5 weeks to get 8 torq bolts for the rocker assy. I saw the old ones. Lucky they didn't break.

Took a nice ride down Rt. 5 home. All is good now.

Glad that is over. A shame it took so long to get the bolts. I bet that ride on Rt. 5 helped put the hassles behind you. I'd say you have some "make-up" riding to do. :)

I'm glad you are back on the road and happy but I am curious about the bolts you mentioned. What was so wrong with them? Got pictures?
