I have a 1999 K1200LT with speedometer problems. The speedometer started acting wild this past week. The needle bounces around or doesn't work at all. Is this a problem with the speedometer sensor or is this some other problem? Thanks,Dave

I have the KLT'01, but never this issue. The sensor is on the rear end, on the top of the case and easily taken off for cleaning if need be. One allen screw holds it and it pops straight up and out of its socket/hole. It is subject to crud occasionally, so a look see would not hurt. If some tiny metal fragment, sliver got on the face of the thingy, it may cause some issue. Go look:). The speedo is an electronic device, so anything goes, imo. Hopefully its simple like this! Good luck, Randy13233:thumb

It might not be the sensor, but rather the ring the sensor is attempting to read.
I think, and those with more knowledge please chime in, that said ring can come loose and rotate on its own. I don't think the fix is all that tough. Reach through the hole where the sensor mounts and probe around with a small screwdriver and see if the "impulse sending wheel" is loose.
Do a search on the subject.

The speedometer pick-up wire may be broken. Wires connect, speedo works, wires disconnect speedo fails. I have read some posts about this on the bmwlt website.
Carefully follow the wire from the sensor along the final drive to where it flexs to go the frame. That is where it will be broken.
